BIG, IMPORTANT, MAJOR, SERIOUS, CONTINENT, DEADLY SIN, SISTER, WONDER, DEVIL, LOVERS, MAGICIAN, STAR, EVIL, MAGIC, NAKED, THIRD.
Hints for October 10
Try these in order, stopping when you have enough to solve a group:
- One group is about importance or consequence.
- One group contains things that belong to sets of seven.
- Four tiles become tarot card names when you put “The” in front of them.
- Four tiles complete familiar phrases when followed by “eye.”
These are paraphrased clues, not official New York Times wording. TechRadar’s guide offered “Serious news,” “There are seven of them,” “A tool for divination,” and “Add a body part we use to see.” Forbes framed its clues as “whoa, that’s huge,” “a member of a lucky group,” “a cartomancer’s tools,” and “like weather, public and London.”

Answers and category explanations
| Color | Category | Tiles | Connection |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yellow | SIGNIFICANT | BIG, IMPORTANT, MAJOR, SERIOUS | Each can describe something consequential or significant. |
| Green | ONE IN A SEPTET | CONTINENT, DEADLY SIN, SISTER, WONDER | Each is one member of a set of seven: continents, deadly sins, sisters, or wonders. |
| Blue | TAROT CARDS, WITH “THE” | DEVIL, LOVERS, MAGICIAN, STAR | Each completes a familiar tarot card title: The Devil, The Lovers, The Magician, and The Star. |
| Purple | ___ EYE | EVIL, MAGIC, NAKED, THIRD | Each makes a phrase with “eye”: evil eye, magic eye, naked eye, and third eye. |
The tricky overlap: MAGIC and MAGICIAN
MAGIC and MAGICIAN look related, but they belong in different groups. MAGIC completes “magic eye,” while MAGICIAN is part of the tarot title “The Magician.” SISTER and WONDER likewise fit the seven-member theme as a sister and a wonder, respectively.
How the daily puzzle works
Forbes’s October 10 guide describes Connections as a free daily New York Times word game: sort 16 words into four groups of four, with three incorrect guesses allowed before a fourth ends the game. That guide says puzzles go live at midnight local time, so “today” can refer to different puzzle dates depending on a player’s time zone. Its color convention—yellow usually easiest, followed by blue, green, and purple—is a general tendency, not a guarantee for every grid.

The guides’ difficulty opinions differ: Forbes calls this puzzle fairly straightforward, while TechRadar’s writer calls it hard. Those are individual assessments, not an objective difficulty rating.
