How the trickiest group works

The purple “cardinal” connection

The purple set is not four examples of one object. Instead, each clue points to a different use of cardinal: the red songbird; a cardinal in the Catholic Church; a player for the St. Louis Cardinals of Major League Baseball; and a player for the Arizona Cardinals of the NFL. That shift between dictionary meaning, religious title and team names is the puzzle’s main wordplay trap.

Why the blue set can be easy to miss

The surnames are not all presented as full names. Bishop, Burns and Pope are recognizable poet surnames, while Lorde is the performing name of the New Zealand singer and songwriter whose name supplies the fourth entry. The intended references are Elizabeth Bishop, Robert Burns, Alexander Pope and Lorde.

A practical solving order

  1. Start with DEBUT, INTRODUCTION, LAUNCH and PREMIERE; their shared “first appearance” meaning is the most direct connection.
  2. Group MOTHER, PRESIDENT, SAINT PATRICK and SAINT VALENTINE by the holidays named for or associated with them.
  3. Use BISHOP, BURNS, LORDE and POPE as the poet set.
  4. Assign the remaining four words—BIRD, CLERGY MEMBER, M.L.B. PLAYER and N.F.L. PLAYER—to the different meanings of “cardinal.”
