NYT Connections #888 answers
| Color | Category | Words |
|---|---|---|
| Yellow | Enhance the taste of | FLAVOR, SALT, SEASON, SPICE |
| Green | Punctuation marks | COLON, DASH, PERIOD, SLASH |
| Blue | Kinds of actors | CHARACTER, FILM, METHOD, STAGE |
| Purple | ____ Zone | BUFFER, COMFORT, TIME, TWILIGHT |
Hints for each group
Yellow hint
These words relate to adding something extra to food or improving its taste.
Green hint
You will find all four of these in written sentences and other text.
Blue hint
Think of different types of dramatic performer, including one associated with a particular acting technique.
#1 Best Overall
Purple hint
Each word can be placed immediately before “zone.” One of the resulting phrases begins just before darkness.
How the groups work
Enhance the taste of: FLAVOR, SALT, SEASON, SPICE
To flavor, salt, season or spice food is to make its taste stronger or better. “Season” works as a verb here, while the other words can describe ingredients or actions used to improve a dish.
Rank #2
Punctuation marks: COLON, DASH, PERIOD, SLASH
A colon, dash, period and slash are all punctuation marks. Their different uses create tempting alternatives elsewhere on the board, but this is the direct category.
Kinds of actors: CHARACTER, FILM, METHOD, STAGE
These words pair with “actor”: character actor, film actor, method actor and stage actor. The set mixes the actor’s role, medium and approach, which makes it less immediately uniform than the yellow and green groups.
Rank #3
____ Zone: BUFFER, COMFORT, TIME, TWILIGHT
The completed phrases are buffer zone, comfort zone, time zone and Twilight Zone. This is the puzzle’s most deceptive set: the four standalone words do not form a clear semantic cluster until “zone” is supplied.
Board words
TWILIGHT, SEASON, FILM, PERIOD, STAGE, SLASH, TIME, METHOD, SALT, COMFORT, DASH, FLAVOR, CHARACTER, COLON, BUFFER, SPICE.
