Hints for Connections: Sports Edition #340
Connections: Sports Edition asks players to sort 16 words into four groups of four that share a connection. The New York Times instruction, reproduced by Parade, is to “group sports terms that share a common thread.”
- One group describes something considered a very easy opponent.
- Look to the NFC South: the clue points to cats, birds, pirates, and royalty.
- LeBron is not the only “king.” Consider nicknames associated with boxing and hockey, too.
- Complete “Pitch _____” with words that can connect to baseball, music, or selling something.
Answers for August 29, 2025
The categories and their four words are:
| Category | Words |
|---|---|
| Easy Opponent | BREEZE, CUPCAKE, LAYUP, PUSHOVER |
| NFC South Teams | ATLANTA, CAROLINA, NEW ORLEANS, TAMPA BAY |
| Teams or Athletes With King Nicknames | HENRY, JAMES, LOS ANGELES, SACRAMENTO |
| Pitch _____ | CLOCK, COUNT, FRAMING, OUT |
These four groups are confirmed in Parade’s August 29 answer guide and a Yahoo Sports report syndicated from Mashable, which identifies the game as puzzle #340.
How the tricky groups fit
Teams or Athletes With King Nicknames
HENRY and JAMES refer to athletes with “King” nicknames; LOS ANGELES and SACRAMENTO refer to teams associated with the Kings. The set is about the nickname, not a single sport.

Pitch _____
Each word completes the phrase in a different sports context: pitch clock, pitch count, pitch framing, and pitch out. The overlap with other meanings of “pitch” is what makes the category less obvious.
