Hints for Connections: Sports Edition #418

The puzzle asks you to group sports terms that share a common thread. Its 16 words form four groups of four; the game also lets you shuffle the board and allows up to four mistakes. Categories progress in difficulty from yellow to green, blue, and purple, according to Yahoo Sports’ November 15 guide.

  • Yellow: Keeps your head warm.
  • Green: Nothing but net!
  • Blue: College signal-callers.
  • Purple: It’s a bird! It’s a plane!

Tips to solve Connections #418

  • Look for words that can fit more than one sports context. For instance, “basket,” “bucket,” “field goal,” and “make” all describe a basketball score, though some may also sound like general sports vocabulary.
  • Check whether a short word is a name. The blue group is made up of first names of SEC quarterbacks, not positions or teams.
  • Try completing a shared phrase. The purple words each follow “Super,” while the yellow group consists of things worn on the head.
  • Use the color progression as a guide, not a guarantee. Yellow is the easiest group and purple the trickiest in the game’s stated progression; if a grouping is uncertain, shuffle the board before submitting.

Connections: Sports Edition is a daily word-grouping game associated with The New York Times and The Athletic, as described by Parade.
