For the September 2, 2025 hard Pips board, start with the blank dominoes beside the zero regions: those placements are tightly constrained. If you want only a nudge, stop after the first section; the complete walkthrough follows.
Hints before the full answer
Hint 1: Start with the blanks
In the upper-left, the double-blank domino fits the nearby zero and five-total constraints. The blank-six tile would push the five-total region over its target. The other blank-sided domino belongs at the zero region farther down the left edge, with its six extending into the blue region totaling 21.
Hint 2: Build toward 21
Put the only three-pip domino in the green region totaling 3, with its five in the blue 21 region. The five-six domino then fills the upper-left purple region totaling 5. The blue region has 17 pips at that point, so the four-five domino across the blue and orange regions supplies the remaining four there.
Hint 3: Check the inequality direction
The orange region totaling 11 takes the six-one domino; its one enters the dark-blue region totaling 3. The pink equality region is filled with twos. From there, place the two-four domino so the four enters the green region marked >3. The symbol means greater than 3, not less than 3.

Full placement sequence
Erik Kain’s Forbes walkthrough describes these placements in sequence. Dominoes can be rotated to match the board’s connected spaces.
- Place the double-blank domino in the upper-left, where the zero and five-total regions constrain it.
- Place the blank-six domino at the left-side zero region, with the six in the blue 21-total region.
- Put the three-pip domino in the green 3-total region, with its five extending into the blue 21 region.
- Place the five-six domino in the upper-left purple 5-total region. The blue 21 region now contains 17 pips.
- Place the four-five domino across the blue 21 and orange 11 regions, completing the blue total.
- Place the six-one domino to finish the orange 11 total; its one pip goes into the dark-blue 3 region.
- Place the double-two domino from the dark-blue 3 region into the pink equality region.
- Place the two-four domino from the pink equality region into the green >3 region, with the four satisfying that greater-than condition.
- Place the remaining two-six and one-three dominoes in the orange 3 and dark-blue 9 regions.
Why the final layout may differ
The walkthrough reports that the last two dominoes can occupy either of the two remaining spots. So the pictured arrangement in a guide should not be treated as the only accepted layout: the important check is that the remaining spaces and region conditions are satisfied.

How Pips rules apply here
Pips uses domino-like tiles that must cover the board while satisfying the condition shown in each colored region. Conditions can require an exact total, equality, or a greater-than relationship; uncolored spaces have no special condition. Tiles may be rotated, but each placement must fit the grid and work for both regions it touches. Tom’s Guide’s general rules overview explains these mechanics: How to play Pips.
