This archived guide covers New York Times Strands puzzle #27, dated March 30, 2024—not today’s daily puzzle. Its theme hint is “Camouflage.” Want a nudge before the answers? Look for animals associated with spots.

NYT Strands #27 hints for March 30, 2024

The official-style theme hint reported for this puzzle is “Camouflage.” A further hint is that the theme words are animals linked by spots. The spangram makes that connection clearer, so stop here if you want to solve the grid without seeing it.

Spoiler warning: March 30 Strands answers

Spangram: SPOTTY

Theme words: CHEETAH, LEOPARD, LADYBUG, DALMATIAN, HYENA, GIRAFFE

The animal-spot association explains the theme: the list includes familiar spotted animals, along with a ladybug and a Dalmatian. Together, the answers point to “SPOTTY.”

How the Strands grid works

Forbes’ dated guide describes Strands as a word-search-style puzzle played on a six-by-eight letter grid. Trace adjacent letters horizontally, vertically, or diagonally, changing direction as needed to form a word. Theme words turn blue when found; the spangram turns yellow and connects opposite edges of the board. According to that guide, finding three valid non-theme words of at least four letters unlocks a hint. These mechanics are attributed to the guide rather than presented as a check of current game instructions.
