How the Strands hints work

Strands is a word-search puzzle played on a six-by-eight grid. Theme words remain blue when found, while the spangram is highlighted yellow and stretches between opposite sides of the grid. According to contemporaneous coverage, finding three words that are not theme answers earns a hint that reveals a theme word.

The theme can point to words connected in different ways. The New York Times, as quoted by Forbes, notes: “Some themes are fill-in-the-blank phrases. They may also be steps in a process, items that all belong to the same category, synonyms or homophones.”
