What does “grade” mean?
- School result: a mark or evaluation assigned to academic work.
- Level or category: a rank or measure of quality, such as a grade of material.
- Slope: the steepness of a road, hill, or other incline.
- As a verb: to evaluate work or sort something by quality or level.
For example, a student may earn a high grade on an essay, while a road sign may warn drivers about a steep grade.
Why the answer can be tricky
Once G and E are in place, several familiar words can fit a similar pattern, including GRATE, GRAPE, GRACE, GRAVE, and GROVE. TRADE shares the same ending but starts differently. These are plausible alternatives, not reported official answers. Use the colored feedback to narrow letter positions and eliminate candidates; meaning alone cannot distinguish them.

The reported answer has the pattern G–R–A–D–E, with A and E as its vowels and no repeated letters. Contemporary coverage characterized the puzzle as moderately challenging and reported an average of about 4.4 guesses. That figure is a third-party estimate, not an NYT-confirmed statistic, and individual results depend on the starting guess and play style.
How to approach similar Wordle puzzles
- Choose an opening guess that tests several common consonants and more than one vowel. Words such as RAISE, CRANE, and SLATE are examples, not guaranteed optimal starts.
- Use early guesses to gather information rather than trying to predict the answer’s meaning.
- Do not spend another guess on letters the board has already eliminated.
- Track both the identity and position of yellow letters: they are in the answer, but not in the square where you played them.
- If several candidates remain, consider a probing guess that tests multiple unresolved letters, when your remaining guesses and game mode allow it.
- Check common endings and letter combinations carefully; a shared frame can leave several valid-looking words in contention.
