Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →oart.dll is a genuine Microsoft Office component, not a normal Windows system DLL. If Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, PowerPoint Viewer, or Office Setup reports that oart.dll is missing or cannot load, repair the Office installation that owns the file rather than downloading a replacement.
The file is associated with OfficeArt, the graphics component used by Microsoft Office. Microsoft Office 2007 updates identify it as part of the oart-x-none.msp package and document multiple builds, including newer versions than the commonly reported 32-bit 12.0.6214.1000 file. That old record is plausible for Office 2007, but it is not the correct version for every installation.
Start by identifying the affected Office installation
Before changing files, note which program displays the error. The correct repair depends on whether the failure occurs in:
- Word or Excel
- PowerPoint
- Outlook
- PowerPoint Viewer
- An older Office installer
- A document that triggers a crash after Office has already opened
A missing-file message may look like this:
The program can’t start because oart.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.

Other possible variants include “Error loading oart.dll” or a message stating that the file is not designed to run on Windows or contains an error. The exact wording varies by Windows version and by the application launching Office.
Also identify the Office generation and installation type:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps in Windows 11, or Apps & features in Windows 10.
- Search for Microsoft 365, Microsoft Office, or the specific Office product.
- Record whether more than one Office generation is installed.
Office 2007 commonly uses an Office12 folder. One Microsoft Q&A example places the file at:
C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft OfficeOffice12oart.dll
Newer Click-to-Run installations may use a path similar to:

Do not assume that a 64-bit Windows installation requires 64-bit Office. Windows can run 32-bit Office, so the relevant architecture is the architecture of the Office application named in the error.
1. Restart Windows and install pending Office updates
Time needed: 5–20 minutes
A failed update or an incomplete restart can leave Office components out of sync.
- Save your work and restart Windows.
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates and restart again if Windows requests it.
- Open an Office application if possible.
- In Word or Excel, select File > Account.
- Under Office Updates, select Update Options > Update Now.
If Office opens normally afterward, create a test document and close the application. If the same oart.dll message returns, continue with Office Repair. Do not copy a DLL from another computer at this stage, because the other installation may have a different Office generation, language, architecture, or build.
2. Run Office Online Repair
Time needed: 15–45 minutes
Office Repair is the primary fix for a missing, damaged, or incompatible Office-owned DLL. Online Repair is more complete than Quick Repair because it can replace a broader set of installed Office files.
Microsoft 365 and Click-to-Run Office
On Windows 11:
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Office.
- Select the three dots beside it.
- Choose Modify.
- Approve the administrator prompt.
- Select Online Repair.
- Select Repair and leave the computer connected to the internet.
- Restart Windows when the repair finishes.
On Windows 10:
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Apps & features.
- Select the Office installation.
- Choose Modify.
- Select Online Repair.
- Select Repair and follow the prompts.
Quick Repair is faster and does not normally require an internet download, so it can be a reasonable first attempt when connectivity is limited. If Quick Repair completes but the error remains, run Online Repair instead.
Rank #2
Test the application that originally failed. A successful repair should allow Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, or the affected viewer to start without the oart.dll message.
MSI-based Office
Some older Office installations use Windows Installer rather than Click-to-Run.
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Select the Office entry.
- Choose Change.
- Select Repair.
- Follow the wizard and restart Windows afterward.
If the repair wizard requests installation media, use the original Office disc or a trusted installation source. Do not browse for an isolated DLL.

If Office was installed through the Microsoft Store:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the Office application.
- Open Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- If Repair does not resolve the issue, return to the same screen and select Reset, if available.
Reset may remove application data or sign-in information, so use it only after Repair fails.
3. Reinstall the same Office product and architecture
Time needed: 30–90 minutes
If Office Repair cannot restore oart.dll, the installation may be incomplete, badly damaged, or affected by a patch mismatch. Uninstall and reinstall the same Office product rather than installing a different release over it.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Remove the Office installation named in the error.
- Restart Windows.
- If another Office generation remains installed, confirm that it is intentional.
- Reinstall from your Microsoft account, the organization’s official deployment source, or the original trusted installation media.
- Choose the same architecture as the affected installation unless you are deliberately changing it.
- Open the repaired application and install its available Office updates.
Microsoft’s Office guidance distinguishes Click-to-Run, MSI, and Store installations, so use the uninstall route that matches your product.

For Office 2007, Microsoft states that installation requires the original installation disc and product key. Office 2007 is unsupported, so its installer may not behave like a modern Microsoft 365 installer. After reinstalling, apply the appropriate updates available for that product from Microsoft.
A reinstall should restore the complete Office component set, including the matching oart.dll, instead of forcing one file into an unrelated directory.

4. Check Windows Security Protection history
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Antivirus software can quarantine or delete an Office file. Check this after repair and before attempting manual restoration.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review recent detections involving the Office installation folder.
- Expand a detection to inspect its location and details.
Restore or allow a file only when you have verified that it came from the legitimate Office installation and that the detection is not an active threat. Microsoft warns that allowing a real threat can expose the device.

If Defender or another security product repeatedly removes the file, do not keep restoring it blindly. Run a full security scan, update the security product, and repair or reinstall Office from trusted media. A recurring quarantine event may indicate malware, a damaged file, or a false positive that needs investigation.
5. Repair broader Windows corruption only when other components are failing
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
oart.dll normally belongs to Office, so System File Checker does not usually restore it. These commands are useful when Windows itself has broader corruption, Windows Update is failing, or unrelated protected system files are also damaged.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Run this command first:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
Microsoft recommends DISM before SFC. Restart Windows after both commands finish and retry Office.
If DISM reports that it cannot find source files, install pending Windows updates and retry. If SFC reports that it found corrupt files but could not repair some of them, review the result and return to Office Online Repair or reinstall Office. Do not treat a successful SFC scan as proof that an Office-owned DLL has been restored.
Repeatedly hunting through Windows repair output and rerunning SFC or DISM without knowing what changed can make diagnosis difficult. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what it identifies; its repair function is performed by the full version, and it is not a substitute for reinstalling Office when Office itself is damaged.
6. Do not use regsvr32 for ordinary oart.dll errors
Time needed: 2 minutes
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose missing-DLL repair command.
Office installs OfficeArt as part of the Office product. Microsoft’s Office update documentation also notes that the relevant update requires no registry changes. Running commands such as these is therefore not the normal fix:
regsvr32 oart.dll
regsvr32 /u oart.dll
They may produce a registration error, or they may distract from the actual damaged Office installation. Do not register the file unless Microsoft documentation for the exact Office component specifically instructs you to do so.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches7. Skip Windows Features and Device Manager unless the symptoms point elsewhere
Time needed: 5–20 minutes if applicable
Turning Windows Features on or off does not normally restore an Office-owned oart.dll. Do not enable random .NET Framework, legacy media, or compatibility features just because an Office application failed to start.
Likewise, Device Manager does not repair Office files. Use it only when the failure is accompanied by display, printer, graphics, or other hardware symptoms:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver or Properties to inspect its status.
A graphics driver update may help an Office crash involving rendering, but it will not supply the missing OfficeArt DLL. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify the specific versions involved; the full version performs driver installation, while repairing or reinstalling Office remains the definitive fix for a missing oart.dll.
Why random DLL downloads usually fail
Downloading oart.dll from an unknown DLL site is unsafe and often ineffective. The file may have:
- The wrong Office generation
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- An incompatible language or service-pack level
- A mismatched build that causes ordinal or entry-point errors
- Malware or unwanted modifications
The old 12.0.6214.1000 32-bit file, often listed at approximately 13.5 MB, should not be treated as a universal target. Microsoft’s Office 2007 updates document later oart.dll builds, including 12.0.6535.5000, 12.0.6548.5000, and 12.0.6748.5000.
Do not copy the file into C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, or a game directory. The correct location is inside the Office installation that installed it. Manual replacement is appropriate only from matching, trusted Office media or a verified backup, with the same Office generation, language, architecture, and build.
What probably caused the error
The likely causes, in practical troubleshooting order, are:
| Likely cause | Appropriate response |
|---|---|
| Damaged or incomplete Office installation | Run Online Repair, then reinstall if necessary |
| Office update or patch mismatch | Update or reinstall the complete matching Office release |
| 32-bit/64-bit or side-by-side Office conflict | Repair the Office installation named in the error |
| Antivirus quarantine | Inspect Protection history and verify the file before restoring |
| Disk or Windows corruption | Run DISM followed by SFC when broader symptoms exist |
| Malware or cleanup software | Scan the computer and reinstall Office from trusted media |
Multiple Office generations can have separate copies of oart.dll. Copying one version over another can replace a file that belongs to a different installation and create a new ordinal or entry-point error.
If Microsoft 365 architecture must be changed, Microsoft’s installation guidance requires uninstalling the existing Microsoft 365 installation first. Do not mix architectures casually in a side-by-side setup.
If the error happens only with one document
If Office starts normally but crashes when opening one workbook, presentation, or document, the file may not be missing. The problem could involve an add-in, a damaged document, or an Office crash where oart.dll is listed as the faulting module even though it exists.
Best Value
Try these checks:
- Start the affected Office application without opening the problem document.
- Disable recently installed add-ins.
- Test another document of the same type.
- Update or repair Office.
- If only one file fails, recover it from a trusted backup or use the application’s built-in document recovery options.
This pattern calls for application and document troubleshooting rather than copying a replacement DLL.
FAQ
Is oart.dll part of Windows?
No. It is normally an Office-owned component installed inside the Office directory, not a generic Windows runtime that belongs in System32.
Recommended Free Tools
Does oart.dll belong to Visual C++ 2015?
No. The Visual C++ redistributable is not the normal source of this OfficeArt DLL.
Can 64-bit Windows run the 32-bit oart.dll file?
Yes, when the Office application itself is 32-bit. Match the DLL to Office, not simply to the Windows architecture.
What should Office 2007 users do?
Use the original installation disc and product key, reinstall Office 2007, and apply the appropriate Office updates. Do not assume that a modern Microsoft 365 repair path applies to Office 2007.
Should I copy oart.dll from another computer?
Only if it comes from matching, trusted Office media or a verified backup and matches the Office generation, language, architecture, and build. In most cases, Office Repair or a full reinstall is safer.
Will System Restore fix it?
It may help only when a restore point predates the failure and Office repair is unavailable. It is not a first-line repair for an Office-owned DLL.
What is the safest fix?
Identify the Office installation that produced the message, run Online Repair or the matching MSI/Store repair, and reinstall that same product if repair fails.
