Oasis showed how an AI model could turn player inputs into a changing, Minecraft-like video scene in real time. The 2024 demonstration associated with Decart and Etched was a proof of concept—not Minecraft, a dependable building game, or evidence that generated video is ready to replace coded game engines. Reports at the time described unstable visuals, low resolution, hallucinations, and sessions lasting only minutes.
What Oasis is—and what it is not
Oasis was presented in 2024 as an interactive video-generation demo associated with AI startup Decart and chip company Etched. It evoked Minecraft through blocky landscapes and familiar actions, but it was not the commercial Minecraft game. The reporting does not establish a connection that would let Minecraft owners access Oasis.
The distinction matters: Oasis generated a stream of images that reacted to input, rather than running a conventional game world whose objects and rules are maintained by a coded game engine. It demonstrated an unusual interaction, not a complete replacement for a game.
How the interactive video generation worked
MIT Technology Review described Oasis as using next-frame prediction. In that account, the model was trained on Minecraft gameplay clips and associated player actions, then generated successive frames in response to what a player did. This is the publication’s description of the system, not an independent technical audit or reproduced benchmark.

Players could try actions such as moving, jumping, breaking blocks, and placing blocks. Contemporary coverage also described scenes changing or morphing as players moved or looked away. An option to begin from an uploaded image was mentioned in an ISPR roundup reproducing coverage. These features made the demo feel interactive, but did not ensure that the scene behaved like a persistent, coherent world.
What the 2024 reports found—and where it fell short
Reports published in October and November 2024 described low resolution, frequent hallucinations, unstable landscapes, and objects that did not remain consistent. MIT Technology Review reported that sessions lasted only minutes. These are observations about the demonstration at that time; they do not verify Oasis’s condition or availability in October 2026.

Oasis versus a conventional game engine
This is a conceptual contrast, not a controlled product comparison: the available reporting does not provide matched tests of Oasis and a commercial game.

What the companies’ vision does—and does not—establish
Decart cofounder and CEO Dean Leitersdorf described the ambition this way: “Your screen can turn into a portal—into some imaginary world that doesn’t need to be coded, that can be changed on the fly. And that’s really what we’re trying to target here.” That is a statement of the company’s goal, not a description of capabilities the demo had already proven.

The broader idea—prompting a system to create worlds or games on demand—is a forecast. Oasis did not show that arbitrary games could be generated at high fidelity, with dependable rules and persistent worlds. The gap between a scene that responds moment by moment and a complete game that reliably supports play is central to judging the demonstration.
The hardware claims remain qualified
The reported demo used Nvidia cards. Etched’s Sohu accelerator was still in development in the coverage, and Etched claimed it could deliver a tenfold performance gain. MIT Technology Review reported that the claim had not been substantiated at the time. NYU Tandon professor Siddharth Garg said he was “very skeptical about a 10x improvement just from smarter or more specialized design.” The tenfold figure should therefore be read as a company claim, not an established benchmark or a performance result available to players.

Garg also said, “Custom chips for AI hold the potential to unlock significant performance gains and energy efficiency gains.” His broader observation about potential does not validate Etched’s specific claim. Etched cofounder and COO Robert Wachen described the company’s approach as “much more specialized than all of the chips out on the market today”; that, too, is a vendor statement rather than independent evidence of performance.

Oasis made a compelling case that AI-generated video can react to game-like inputs: movement and other actions could influence the next scene. Its reported instability, low resolution, short sessions, and hallucinations also show why interactive video generation is not the same as a robust game. The demo is useful as a 2024 proof of concept, but the evidence does not establish that AI-generated video is ready to replace coded game engines.

The reviewed 2024 reports do not establish whether the online demo remains accessible or what later progress Decart, Etched, or the model may have made. Current availability and subsequent technical improvements are therefore unverified.
