Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor a desktop PC, start with the High preset, then adjust ray tracing and upscaling to suit your GPU and resolution. In PCGamesN’s August 2025 test on an RTX 4070 system, High delivered better average performance and 1% lows than Ultra. That is a useful starting point—not a guarantee for other hardware or a verified benchmark of the game’s October 2026 build. Steam Deck players need a separate, much lower profile.
Best settings for Oblivion Remastered on a desktop PC
PCGamesN’s August 15, 2025 settings guide is a practical baseline. It used an Intel Core i7-11700F, GeForce RTX 4070 12GB, 32GB DDR4-3200 RAM and Windows 11 64-bit, testing at 1920×1080 and 2560×1440 with CapFrameX. Its High profile was:
- View Distance, Effects, Foliage, Shadows, Global Illumination, Textures, Reflections, Post-Processing, Hair and Cloth: High
- Lumen Hardware RT: On, Medium mode
- Nvidia DLSS: Quality, on Nvidia hardware
- Frame Generation: On
- VSync: Off
- Motion Blur: Off
- Screen Space Reflections: On
- Upscaling sharpness: 0
Treat ray tracing and upscaling as adjustable choices, not requirements. If performance is poor, first try turning down or disabling hardware ray tracing and changing the upscaling mode; check both image quality and responsiveness after each change. PCGamesN found Low visibly reduced image quality, while differences between Medium and Ultra were harder to distinguish in its test. It identified lighting and character detail as notable visual differences.
What the High-versus-Ultra test found
On PCGamesN’s stated RTX 4070 test system, High averaged 99 fps with 37.9 fps 1% lows; Ultra’s default settings averaged 74.4 fps with 24.6 fps 1% lows. The reported minimum was 19.4 fps on High and 4.9 fps on Ultra. These are measurements from that publication’s test, not expected results for every PC. They illustrate why average FPS alone can be misleading: low points can affect how smooth play feels even when the average looks acceptable.

Steam Deck settings
Do not carry the desktop profile over to Steam Deck. PCGamesN’s separate Steam Deck profile uses Low for View Distance, Effects, Foliage, Shadows, Global Illumination, Textures, Reflections, Post-Processing, Hair and Cloth, with both Lumen Hardware RT and software RT Off.
- Upscaling: AMD FSR Performance
- Sharpness: 20
- Frame Generation: Off
- VSync: Off
- Motion Blur: Off
- Screen Space Reflections: On
The guide says its Steam Deck testing rarely exceeded 30 fps and advises against frame generation on the device because its tested base frame rates were low. This is a Steam Deck-specific profile and result, not a recommendation for every handheld PC.

Choose upscaling and frame generation for your GPU
Upscaling renders the game at a lower internal resolution and reconstructs the image for display; frame generation inserts generated frames between rendered ones. Both can make an FPS counter rise, but generated frames are not the same as a higher native render rate. Consider motion clarity and responsiveness as well as the counter.
- Nvidia RTX: Nvidia lists DLSS Super Resolution and DLAA for RTX users. DLAA prioritizes image quality at native resolution rather than upscaling.
- RTX 40 series: Nvidia lists DLSS Frame Generation support.
- RTX 50 series: Nvidia says DLSS Multi Frame Generation can be enabled through Nvidia app overrides. Nvidia’s performance multipliers are vendor claims tied to the stated hardware and conditions, not typical results guaranteed for this game.
- AMD hardware: AMD lists FSR among the game’s technologies; the Steam Deck profile above uses FSR Performance.
In its test, PCGamesN observed ghosting with both FSR and DLSS, especially during combat blocking, and said a DLSS 4 override removed the DLSS ghosting it encountered. That finding is specific to its setup. Watch moving characters, foliage and combat for ghosting or shimmering, and turn a feature off if its artifacts or added latency bother you.

Check your PC against the official requirements
Bethesda’s listed PC requirements provide a baseline, not a promise of a particular frame rate. The official list gives the following minimum and recommended specifications:
| Requirement | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 version 21H1 or later | Not stated by Bethesda on the cited requirements page |
| Processor | AMD Ryzen 5 2600X or Intel Core i7-6800K | AMD Ryzen 5 3600X or Intel Core i5-10600K |
| Memory | 16 GB RAM | 32 GB RAM |
| Graphics | AMD Radeon RX 5700 or Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 Ti | AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT or Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 |
| DirectX | Version 12 | Version 12 |
| Storage | 125 GB; SSD listed as required | 125 GB; SSD listed as required |
There is a published disagreement about storage: Bethesda lists an SSD as required, while PCGamesN says one is not required. The available sources do not settle that conflict, so the official specification is the safer requirement to follow.

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
If you are considering an upgrade, compare your current GPU, display resolution, desired frame rate and budget before buying anything. The RTX 4070 cited here is PCGamesN’s test card, not a universal recommendation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How current are these settings?
The detailed independent settings guide was updated August 15, 2025. Bethesda’s Update 1.2 announcement, dated July 16, 2025, says the patch focused on quest, gameplay and performance fixes, but it does not establish performance behavior after later updates or provide a graphics preset. As of October 2026, the cited results should be treated as a dated starting point: validate them against your own game build and hardware rather than assuming later patches left performance unchanged.
