Oblivion Remastered Builds: How to Choose a Class and Shape Your Character

Choose an Oblivion Remastered build by matching its major skills to how you want to play. Here’s how the Remaster’s skill-based leveling and Virtue Points affect that choice.

There is no universally best build in Oblivion Remastered: the right choice is the class and skill set that support how you want to play. Start with your preferred loop—weapon combat, magic, stealth, or a mix—then choose major skills you expect to use regularly and plan to sleep when the game signals that you can level up.

How to choose a build that fits

A build is more than a combat role. Your class determines which skills count as major skills for progression, so a class can shape how quickly your character levels as well as what they are equipped to do. The original Oblivion manual describes a class as having seven major skills and says that raising those skills by ten points in total advances a level. That is evidence for the original game’s framework; use Bethesda’s Remastered guidance for the current level-up process rather than assuming every original detail is unchanged. Bethesda Softworks’ original PC manual explains the earlier system.

  • Pick a playstyle: Decide whether you want to rely mainly on weapons, spells, stealth, or a combination.
  • Match major skills to your habits: Choose skills you will actually improve through ordinary play. A class built around skills you rarely use may not suit your progression preferences.
  • Consider attribute direction: Think about which attributes your chosen skills support and which you want to emphasize when assigning level-up points.
  • Choose a progression feel: A role-playing class is a straightforward starting point; a custom class gives you more control over the skills that drive your progression.

Race, class, and birthsign are choices, not a single mandated recipe. Bethesda staff describe character creation as a way to choose an individual path: “You’ll pick a different class or a different birthsign, but more importantly, you’re going to pick a different path,” says Megan Sawyer, Senior Environment Artist at Bethesda Game Studios. Bethesda’s beginner guide presents the choices in that spirit.

What changes when you level in the Remaster

In the Remaster, improving skills builds experience toward a level. When a bronze indicator shows that you are ready, you must sleep to complete the level-up. Bethesda says each level grants 12 Virtue Points: you can put up to five points into one attribute and raise up to three attributes during that level-up. See Bethesda Support’s Remastered leveling instructions for the official explanation.

Enemy scaling makes the skills you advance a practical consideration, not just a role-playing preference. Bethesda warns that enemies scale with your character, so raising noncombat skills without keeping combat capability adequate can make encounters difficult. This is a reason to pay attention to what your major skills are doing for your character over time—not a reason to avoid exploration or noncombat skills altogether.

Build approaches by playstyle

Use these as starting points for comparing recommendations, not as ranked or tested winners. The available guides do not establish a universal best class or an independently tested build ranking.

Approach Good fit if you want… What to examine in a class Progression trade-off
Combat-focused Weapon-centered encounters and a direct role. Whether the major skills match the combat actions you expect to use, and whether your attribute priorities support that approach. Simple to understand, but skills you do not regularly use may be a poor match for your class’s progression focus.
Magic-focused Spells to be central to how you handle situations. Which schools or magic-related skills the recommendation emphasizes, and how its attribute plan fits your intended mage. Detailed mage recipes can be prescriptive. Treat their race, birthsign, class, and leveling choices as one guide’s plan, not a rule for every mage.
Stealth-focused A quieter approach built around avoiding or controlling direct encounters. Whether the chosen major skills reflect the stealth actions you intend to use, while leaving room for combat capability. Skills can advance outside direct fighting; Bethesda’s enemy-scaling warning makes it worth monitoring your ability to handle encounters.
Hybrid Switching between weapons, magic, and/or stealth rather than committing to one loop. Whether the class’s major skills cover the mix you will actually use and whether your level-up attributes reflect your priorities. More flexible role-playing, but more decisions about which skills and attributes to emphasize.

Combat and straightforward role-playing

If you want to get into the game without designing a progression plan, choose a class whose role and major skills feel intuitive for the actions you expect to repeat. The important test is practical: will you use those skills often enough that the class feels like your character rather than a label you ignore?

Magic and guide-led plans

The Wizard’s Tower’s mage build guide, updated in April 2026, gives a detailed example covering race, birthsign, class, major skills, and a leveling path. It proposes organizing its mage builds around Intelligence and Willpower. That is a specific guide’s approach to mage characters, not a universal attribute rule or a tested comparison against other styles.

Stealth and hybrid choices

For stealth or a mixed approach, evaluate recommendations by the skills you will use repeatedly and the combat options you want to keep viable. A hybrid class can suit someone who likes switching tactics, but the word “hybrid” by itself does not guarantee balanced progression. Check its actual major skills and decide how you want to distribute level-up points.

How to level without losing sight of your build

  1. Improve skills through play. Skill activity contributes to experience. Bethesda’s official tips note that running and jumping can raise Athletics and Acrobatics; these are ways skills can improve while exploring, not substitutes for deciding which abilities you want to build around. Bethesda’s Remastered tips cover this advice.
  2. Watch for the bronze readiness indicator. Its appearance means you can complete a level-up; it does not complete the process on its own.
  3. Sleep to finish the level-up. After sleeping, assign the 12 Virtue Points among attributes, within the limit of five points in one attribute and three attributes increased at that level.
  4. Check whether your character still handles combat. If you have advanced skills that do not help in fights, consider which combat skills and attributes you want to develop next. This responds to Bethesda’s warning about enemies scaling with character level.

PC Gamer also describes skill-specific tactics and exploits for gaining skill ranks faster in its leveling guide. Those are optional outlet advice, not Bethesda’s official progression instructions, and tactics that rely on exploits can be version-sensitive. The official baseline remains skill improvement followed by sleeping to complete the level-up.

What old build advice may get wrong

Guides written for the original game can still explain its class framework, but do not automatically apply every min-max assumption to the Remaster. PC Gamer reports that Endurance-derived health gains are retroactive in the Remaster and that level scaling is more forgiving than in the original. These are third-party guide interpretations, not official confirmation or a result of independent testing here. Bethesda’s 2026 patch and platform news do not, by themselves, establish that a particular build mechanic changed; check the relevant platform’s patch notes before relying on a patch-specific claim.

In particular, distinguish the original manual’s seven-major-skills and ten-point progression description from the Remaster-specific details Bethesda Support confirms about skill-based experience, sleeping, Virtue Points, and scaling. Keeping that distinction clear prevents an old leveling guide from being mistaken for current Remaster documentation.
