In July 2025, players on the Steam Beta branch reported that update 1.2 had brought back a five-child relief and red lighting. GameSpot said the change was absent from the official patch notes, so it is best described as a quietly observed beta change—not an officially announced fix.
What was wrong with the remastered door?
The door marks the entrance to the Dark Brotherhood’s Cheydinhal sanctuary. Reports about the launch version identified two differences from the original: the relief depicted seven children rather than the five at the center of the lore account, and the door lacked its distinctive red lighting.
For fans, those details worked together. The count raised a lore-consistency concern, while the missing glow altered the entrance’s ominous mood. GamesRadar relayed one player’s complaint that the door had lost “that dark aura and that blood-red light, with that terrifying sound, as if it were a door that could lead to the underworld itself.” That is a player comment, not an official description or a measure of how widely the sentiment was shared.
What changed in Steam Beta 1.2?
On July 15, 2025, GameSpot’s Cameron Koch reported that Steam Beta 1.2 players had noticed the door displaying five children and glowing red again. GamesRadar’s Anna Koselke also described beta players observing the restored depiction and lighting. Neither report establishes an official explanation for the change, and GameSpot noted it was not listed in the patch notes.

At the time of GamesRadar’s report, the beta update had not yet reached all platforms. The available coverage does not establish the exact current version on every platform or confirm a platform-by-platform rollout, so the 2025 beta observation should not be treated as a guarantee about a particular current installation.

The criticism was about more than a decorative mismatch. The altered number of figures appeared inconsistent with the lore account cited in coverage, and the missing red illumination changed the sanctuary entrance’s atmosphere. GamesRadar quoted one Reddit poster saying, “I feel really very disappointed with this.” That reaction illustrates an individual player’s response; it does not show that all players felt the same way.
