If OBS warns that the encoder is overloaded while streaming to YouTube with Apple VT H.264, first confirm that your Mac and installed OBS version support the selected encoder for streaming. Then reduce output resolution or frame rate, simplify the scene, and check for other GPU-heavy apps. YouTube bitrate settings matter too, but they address stream ingest and connection capacity—not necessarily OBS’s local encoding or rendering load.
First, check whether Apple VT H.264 is supported for your Mac
In OBS, open Settings → Output and confirm the selected encoder. Record your Mac’s processor (Apple Silicon or Intel), macOS version, and OBS version. The encoder label alone does not establish that the configuration is suitable for streaming.
OBS’s hardware-encoding guidance documents H.264 streaming support through VideoToolbox on Apple Silicon and says Intel Macs cannot stream with VideoToolbox because of a constant-bitrate limitation; it directs Intel users to x264 instead. See OBS’s hardware encoding guidance.
There is a version detail to keep in mind: the VideoToolbox implementation on OBS’s moving master branch uses Apple Silicon’s constant-bitrate property with macOS 13 or newer, and logs that it will use average bitrate on Intel or older macOS. This describes the current source implementation, not a promise about every released OBS build. Check your installed version and OBS encoder log before drawing a conclusion. Lower output resolution or frame rate in a controlled test
In Settings → Video, check Output (Scaled) Resolution and Common FPS Values. If the warning continues, change one setting at a time and test again. A lower output resolution can reduce encoder workload; lowering frame rate reduces rendering and encoding work. OBS specifically suggests trying 30 fps if 60 fps is not working.
- For a 60 fps stream, test 30 fps before changing several other settings at once.
- If the warning remains, test a lower output resolution and compare the result using the same scene and representative motion.
- Reduce the base canvas resolution only if resources are severely constrained. OBS notes that this can complicate source sizing and positioning.
Resolution and frame-rate reductions can affect sharpness and motion smoothness, so assess the actual gameplay or other fast-moving content you plan to stream. OBS’s recommendations are troubleshooting options, not a guarantee of a fix. See OBS’s encoding performance troubleshooting guide.

Simplify the scene and check what else is using the GPU
OBS’s workload includes more than the encoder. A complex scene can add rendering demand, and some sources may use resources even when hidden. For a test, temporarily simplify your scene and check macOS Activity Monitor for other GPU-intensive applications.
- Disable expensive filters and reduce the number or resolution of sources.
- Temporarily remove browser overlays or complex animations.
- Close other demanding applications and retest the same scene.
- Keep changes reversible so you can identify which adjustment affected the warning.
Set YouTube ingest values separately from local OBS workload
YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate depends on resolution and frame rate. These figures describe YouTube ingest recommendations; they do not directly diagnose or cure local OBS encoder overload. You also need an internet connection that can sustain the selected bitrate. YouTube recommends a speed test.

For H.264 over RTMP or RTMPS, YouTube lists CBR, recommends a 2-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Use the bitrate range for your chosen resolution and frame rate, then distinguish connection or ingest problems from local encoding and rendering problems. Consult YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Test under realistic conditions and read the right signals
Before going live, test with audio and movement similar to the real stream, then monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages. In OBS, the Stats window can help separate rendering lag, encoding lag, and dropped frames; those signals point to different parts of the streaming chain. A bitrate or network problem is not the same diagnosis as a local encoder overload warning.

There is no single confirmed cause or guaranteed fix without details such as your Mac model, macOS and OBS versions, output settings, OBS log, Stats data, scene sources, and YouTube’s stream-health message. If testing does not isolate the cause, gather those details before changing multiple settings or replacing hardware.
