Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor a 4K 60fps YouTube Live feed, both AV1 and HEVC (H.265) are supported encoder choices, and YouTube recommends the same ingest bitrate for each: 35 Mbps. Choose HEVC if the program is HDR; YouTube’s guidance says AV1 is not supported for HDR. For SDR, use whichever codec your installed OBS setup can encode reliably, then test the full prerecorded-playback-to-YouTube path before going live.
What AV1 and HEVC mean in this setup
The comparison is about the codec OBS uses for the live encoder feed sent to YouTube, not necessarily the codec or format of the prerecorded source file. YouTube’s published RTMP/RTMPS encoder guidance lists both AV1 and H.265/HEVC as video codec options. It does not set a separate codec rule for prerecorded programs or document a special OBS workflow for looping them.
YouTube receives the encoder feed and transcodes a live stream into output formats for viewers. The source file’s codec therefore does not, by itself, determine which live ingest codec you should select. Check the actual OBS output configuration and test the complete source playback, encoding, and YouTube preview chain.
AV1 vs HEVC: the practical differences
| Decision point | AV1 | HEVC (H.265) |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube 4K / 2160p at 60fps | 35 Mbps recommended; 10 Mbps listed as the minimum | 35 Mbps recommended; 10 Mbps listed as the minimum |
| HDR on YouTube | Not supported for HDR in YouTube’s guidance | YouTube names HEVC as its HDR video codec |
| OBS encoder availability | Depends on the installed OBS build, platform, and available hardware or software encoder | Depends on the installed OBS build, platform, and available encoder |
| General codec guidance | OBS describes AV1 as improving quality/file size over HEVC in general; this is not a controlled comparison of your source or settings | OBS describes good editing-software support; AV1 is less well supported by editing software |
| Which to select for SDR | Use if available and reliable in your setup | Use if available and reliable in your setup |
The bitrate figures are YouTube’s recommendations and listed minimums for ingest, not promises about image quality or uplink stability. The English YouTube help table retrieved on October 3, 2026, recommends 50 Mbps for H.264 at the same 4K60 setting. Do not confuse that recommendation with the AV1 and HEVC figures.

Choose based on HDR, encoder availability, and reliability
If the prerecorded program is HDR
Use HEVC for the YouTube encoder feed. YouTube’s guidance identifies H.265/HEVC for HDR and says AV1 is not supported for HDR. OBS 30.1 release notes likewise said AV1 HDR was not supported by YouTube at that time. Confirm that your OBS version and encoder expose an HDR-capable HEVC path before relying on it; the codec alone does not verify that the entire signal is configured correctly.
If the program is SDR
YouTube’s 4K60 table does not give AV1 an ingest-bitrate advantage over HEVC: both have a 35 Mbps recommended setting. OBS’s formats guide characterizes AV1 as offering improved quality/file size over HEVC in general, but there is no content-specific controlled comparison here. Treat that as general guidance, not a guarantee that AV1 will look better with your particular prerecorded video, OBS encoder, or settings.

Check what your system can actually encode
OBS added AV1 and HEVC streaming over Enhanced RTMP in version 29.1, initially describing the feature as a YouTube beta. OBS’s March 2024 announcement discussed its work with YouTube on AV1 and HEVC e-RTMP support, and OBS 30.1 added HDR over RTMP for HEVC. These release notes describe support at those releases, not a guarantee for every later installation or configuration.
OBS’s formats guide says hardware AV1 encoding is available on recent AMD RX 7000, NVIDIA RTX 40-series, and Intel Arc GPUs; it also says software AV1 encoding is possible but needs a high-end CPU for real-time compression. Its NVIDIA NVENC guide identifies RTX 40-series GPUs as supporting AV1 and HEVC. These are guide-level statements: check the encoder choices shown by your own OBS installation and whether encoding load remains stable during source playback. You do not need to buy a GPU simply because the topic is AV1 versus HEVC; first inspect the options you already have.

Configure the YouTube 4K60 ingest target
YouTube’s encoder guidance gives these settings for a 4K / 2160p stream at 60fps:
- Resolution and frame rate: 4K / 2160p at up to 60fps.
- Video bitrate: 35 Mbps recommended for AV1 or HEVC; the table lists 10 Mbps as the minimum for either codec. For comparison, the H.264 recommendation is 50 Mbps.
- Bitrate mode: CBR.
- Keyframe interval: two seconds recommended; do not exceed four seconds.
- Latency: YouTube says the low-latency improvement option is unavailable at 4K; 4K streams are optimized for quality at normal latency.
These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not a complete universal OBS preset: exact encoder labels and available controls vary with the OBS version and the selected encoder. Apply the YouTube targets where the corresponding controls are available, then verify the outgoing feed in YouTube Live Control Room.

Test the prerecorded source and live feed before the event
YouTube recommends testing the encoder before an event, previewing the feed in Live Control Room, and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the event. For a prerecorded program, include these checks in that rehearsal:
- Confirm the live event and stream key. In YouTube Studio, set up or open the scheduled live stream and use its stream key in OBS. Treat the key as a password: do not show or share it, and use the correct key for the intended event.
- Select the actual output encoder. In OBS, open Settings > Output, use Advanced output mode if needed to expose streaming encoder controls, and inspect the Streaming encoder choices. Select AV1 or HEVC only if it is available in your installation; set the YouTube-recommended bitrate mode and keyframe interval where those controls are exposed.
- Set and inspect the video format. In Settings > Video, confirm the output resolution and frame rate match the intended 4K60 feed. Check the source’s own playback frame rate and scaling so a 4K60 output is not mistaken for proof that the original recording is native 4K60.
- Play the complete relevant section. Watch for dropped or repeated frames, encoder overload, audio sync drift, unexpected black frames, and playback ending or looping differently than intended. A short test can miss problems at a file boundary or later in a long program.
- Preview in YouTube Live Control Room. Confirm YouTube receives a stable feed and that the picture, audio, and event settings look right. If viewers use particular devices or networks, check playback on representative devices as well.
- Allow time for recovery. Start the encoder at least 15 minutes before the event, as YouTube recommends, so you can catch ingest or playback problems before the scheduled start.
Common problems and fixes
AV1 or HEVC is missing from OBS
The installed OBS version, operating system, graphics hardware, driver, or selected output mode may not expose that encoder. Check the OBS streaming encoder choices and update only through a version and driver combination supported by your system. If the needed option is unavailable, use the other supported codec that is exposed rather than assuming a setting exists.

YouTube does not accept or stabilize the feed
Check that the stream key is for the intended live event, the selected codec is AV1 or HEVC through the supported RTMP/RTMPS path, and the outgoing settings follow YouTube’s ingest guidance. Inspect the Live Control Room preview and OBS stats for the point of failure; do not assume changing codecs will fix an incorrect key, unstable uplink, or overloaded encoder.
The stream looks poor or drops frames at 4K60
Separate network and encoding problems. Confirm the encoder is set to CBR and that the uplink can sustain the chosen bitrate with headroom; a 35 Mbps recommendation is not proof that your connection can hold it continuously. Check OBS for encoder overload or dropped frames, and test whether playback, scaling, and output frame rate are imposing more work than the machine can handle.
HDR appears wrong or is unavailable
Use HEVC for HDR according to YouTube’s stated codec support, and verify the full HDR signal configuration in OBS and the source. Switching to AV1 is not a remedy for HDR ingest under the cited YouTube guidance.
The video or audio ends, loops, or drifts unexpectedly
These are source-playback and production-chain issues, not an established AV1-versus-HEVC difference. Test the exact recording and the OBS scene through a full playback boundary, checking audio sync, loop or end behavior, and the YouTube preview before the scheduled stream.
