OBS CBR or VBR for YouTube Live Streaming?

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Use CBR (constant bitrate) for a standard OBS stream to YouTube Live. YouTube’s official live encoder settings specify CBR. Choose your bitrate separately, based on your resolution, frame rate, codec and stable upload capacity.

Why CBR is the YouTube-aligned choice

YouTube’s live encoder settings say “Bitrate encoding: CBR.” That makes CBR the clear choice when configuring OBS for YouTube Live; VBR being available in an encoder does not make it YouTube’s recommendation. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.

This is a platform recommendation, not a claim that CBR always produces better-looking video. Encoder options and behavior can differ, so follow YouTube’s guidance for the destination and use the settings available in your chosen OBS encoder.

Set CBR in OBS and choose a suitable bitrate

  1. Open the stream encoder’s output settings in OBS. Select the encoder you intend to use and set its rate-control mode to CBR. The exact label and menu location can vary by encoder and OBS version; OBS’s reviewed documentation describes NVENC-specific options rather than one universal path.
  2. Choose the bitrate for your output. Use YouTube’s recommendations for the codec, resolution and frame rate you are streaming. For H.264, the current YouTube table recommends 8 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. The page does not state a publication date; these are the figures on the page accessed in 2026. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings for other modes and codecs.
  3. Set the keyframe interval to two seconds. YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds. This is separate from rate control.
  4. Use RTMPS if appropriate for your connection setup. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. Transport protocol and bitrate mode solve different problems: choosing RTMPS does not replace selecting CBR.
  5. Check upload capacity and leave headroom. YouTube recommends leaving 20% of upload bandwidth unused. The stream’s total bitrate must fit comfortably within stable upload capacity, not just a speed-test peak. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
  6. Test a representative stream. Include audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast, then monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages. For connection trouble, OBS advises that bitrate must fit stable upload speed and the service’s limits; lowering video bitrate is one troubleshooting step. See OBS connection troubleshooting.

CBR and VBR: what the difference means here

CBR targets a steady bitrate, which aligns with YouTube’s stated live encoder setting. VBR varies bitrate according to the encoder’s settings and content. OBS documents VBR-specific behavior for NVENC: its maxBitRate option is used for VBR and ignored in CBR mode. That is an explanation of an NVENC option, not a general YouTube endorsement of VBR. See OBS’s NVENC guide.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Do not treat this as a universal image-quality ranking or assume every OBS encoder exposes identical controls. For YouTube Live, the practical decision is simpler: choose CBR, then set an appropriate bitrate and verify the stream under real conditions.

Common problems and fixes

  • You cannot find CBR: Check the settings for the selected encoder; available modes and labels vary. YouTube’s recommendation remains CBR, but the OBS NVENC documentation does not establish a single menu path for every encoder and version.
  • The stream drops frames or loses connection: Confirm the upload connection is stable, leave YouTube’s recommended bandwidth headroom, and lower the video bitrate if needed. Check OBS’s connection troubleshooting guidance and YouTube’s stream-health messages.
  • The picture looks poor despite using CBR: CBR does not determine the right bitrate by itself. Recheck the bitrate recommendation for your codec, resolution and frame rate, and test with representative movement.
  • The stream does not meet keyframe guidance: Set a two-second interval and make sure it does not exceed four seconds, as recommended by YouTube.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is an always-on YouTube channel playing uploaded videos, rather than a live camera or gameplay session from OBS, StreamNeo is a different option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud keeps it running without a computer or home connection left on. Every slot streams uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly is $9.99 per month.
