If OBS’s Network Dropped Frames counter is rising while you stream a YouTube loop, first lower the video bitrate in Settings → Output so it fits your stable upload capacity. Then, on Windows, test Settings → Advanced → Network → Enable network optimizations and Enable TCP pacing. Keep Bind to IP set to Default. Treat IP Family → IPv4 Only as a temporary diagnostic, not a default fix.
These steps address network-dropped frames. If OBS instead reports rendering lag or encoding lag, the problem is different and changing network settings may not help.
First, confirm which frames are dropping
OBS distinguishes network-dropped frames from rendering lag and encoding lag. Network drops mean the connection to the remote streaming server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. That usually points to the route between your computer and YouTube’s ingest server, rather than proving that the encoder is too slow. OBS explains that it drops frames to avoid buffering and keep a stream playing; see the OBS Project’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide.
- Network-dropped frames: check upload capacity, network conditions, and the ingest route.
- Rendering lag: OBS is struggling to render the scene. Network settings do not address that symptom.
- Encoding lag: OBS is struggling to encode frames. Investigate encoder load and settings rather than treating it as a network problem.
Viewer-side buffering is also distinct: viewers may have trouble receiving or playing a stream even when your OBS counter does not show network drops. OBS’s Stream Buffering Troubleshooting guide discusses delivery to viewers with varied connections.

Lower bitrate to fit reliable upload capacity
Check the upload path, not just download speed
Run a speed test that reports upload speed, then account for other people and devices using the same connection. A speed-test result is a snapshot, not a guarantee that the connection will sustain that rate throughout a stream. OBS suggests using about 75% of total upload speed as a useful starting point. YouTube recommends leaving 20% bandwidth headroom. These are practical guidelines, not a promise of stability; YouTube also advises accounting for shared network use and primary and backup streams where applicable. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
Reduce the OBS video bitrate and retest
- In OBS, open Settings → Output.
- Lower the video bitrate, apply the change, and test the loop under conditions similar to the real stream.
- Watch the OBS network-dropped-frames counter and YouTube’s stream health. Use representative audio and movement in the test, as YouTube recommends.
Lowering bitrate can stabilize a connection that cannot reliably carry the configured rate, but it trades away video quality. Choose a target that fits the upload capacity left after headroom and other network use, rather than simply matching a speed-test peak.

Choose a YouTube bitrate for the actual video format
YouTube’s live encoder guidance makes recommended video bitrate dependent on codec, resolution, and frame rate. The figures below are YouTube’s recommended settings from its H.264, AV1, and H.265 tables; the page does not state a publication year. They describe encoder bitrate, not the upload speed your connection must deliver.
| Format | H.264 recommended video bitrate | AV1 or H.265 recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
Use YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate table to check the complete matrix for your chosen codec and format, including minimums. YouTube recommends RTMPS for RTMP-based streaming and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. An encoder target from YouTube still needs enough stable upload capacity plus headroom; it is not a substitute for checking your connection.

Test the OBS network options
Available controls can vary by operating system and OBS build. The OBS guide identifies Network Optimizations and TCP pacing as Windows options. Change them as tests, one at a time where practical, so you can tell whether a change helped.
Windows: enable network optimizations and TCP pacing
- Open Settings → Advanced → Network.
- Enable Enable network optimizations.
- Enable Enable TCP pacing.
- Keep Bind to IP on Default, then test the stream.
Use IPv4-only as a reversible diagnostic
If drops continue, try IP Family → IPv4 Only and test again. If it makes no difference, return the setting to IPv4 and IPv6. OBS does not present IPv4-only as a universal fix; it is a way to test whether the issue is related to the network path in your particular setup.

Isolate the ingest server and other network causes
Try another YouTube ingest server
In Settings → Stream, select a different server if OBS offers that choice, then test. A change in results can help identify an issue specific to one route or server. It does not repair a broader connection problem.
Check Wi-Fi, software, drivers, and equipment
- Wi-Fi: if you are streaming wirelessly, test a wired connection. OBS recommends wired networking because Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming.
- VPN, security, or network-prioritization software: test whether one of these is interfering with the connection. Change security settings cautiously; do not leave protections disabled unnecessarily.
- Network drivers: check for driver issues if the problem persists.
- Router, modem, cables, or other network devices: restart the modem and router if appropriate, and investigate the physical connection if troubleshooting points to faulty hardware. A cable replacement will not fix ISP routing or upstream congestion.
- ISP or external routing: if the checks above do not resolve the issue, contact your ISP. Congestion or routing beyond your home may be involved.
Use dynamic bitrate only as a fallback
OBS’s Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion (Beta) option can reduce network drops by lowering bitrate when the connection cannot keep up. The trade-off is lower video quality. OBS cautions that this does not fix the underlying network problem, so use it as mitigation rather than a replacement for identifying the cause.
