If OBS’s Dropped Frames (Network) counter keeps climbing during a YouTube stream, first check the connection from your Windows PC to YouTube’s ingest server and whether your upload can sustain the configured bitrate. That is different from rendering lag or encoding overload, which points to local GPU or encoder capacity. Read the OBS statistics and YouTube Live Control Room stream-health messages before changing settings; then use the matching fixes below.
Identify which kind of frame loss you have
OBS Project defines dropped frames as a connection to the remote server that is unstable or cannot keep up with the set bitrate. Here, the remote server means YouTube’s ingest server—not an OBS server. A yellow or red connection indicator together with a rising network dropped-frames counter points to the network path or bitrate capacity. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide explains this distinction.
| Signal | What it points to | First place to look |
|---|---|---|
| Dropped Frames (Network) rises; connection indicator turns yellow or red | Unstable delivery to ingest, or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain | OBS connection status, upload capacity, and YouTube stream health |
| Rendering lag or encoding overload appears in OBS statistics or logs | Local GPU or encoder workload | GPU load, game settings, scenes and sources, output resolution and frame rate |
| Viewers report buffering, but OBS shows no dropped frames | Potentially viewer-side network, location, or device differences | Check OBS and YouTube health before lowering stream quality |
Viewer buffering alone does not establish that OBS is dropping frames. OBS notes that viewers can experience buffering because their connections, locations, and devices differ. For a fuller diagnosis, compare the OBS network counter and connection state, OBS rendering and encoding statistics, system load, and YouTube’s live stream-health errors.
Capture the evidence before changing settings
- In OBS, open View → Stats and note the dropped-frames counter, rendering and encoding lag, and output bitrate. Record the time and whether the connection indicator is green, yellow, or red.
- While the stream is live, check the event’s YouTube Live Control Room stream-health messages. YouTube reports stream status and specific errors; use these to distinguish a delivery problem from a format or configuration error. See YouTube’s stream-health metrics guidance.
- Change one thing at a time and watch whether the relevant counter stabilizes. If you change several network, encoder, and scene settings together, you lose the ability to tell which one mattered.
Fix network dropped frames in a controlled order
1. Check bitrate against sustained upload
Run an upload speed test, then compare the result with the configured video bitrate. OBS suggests starting around 75% of total upload speed when setting video bitrate; this is a troubleshooting heuristic, not a guarantee. A speed test is a snapshot, while a continuous stream needs upload capacity that remains reliable over time. YouTube likewise recommends testing upload and choosing a quality your connection can sustain.

If the counter rises, lower the video bitrate and monitor whether network drops stop. This can reduce picture quality, but it is a useful diagnostic: if fewer frames are dropped at a lower bitrate, available or stable upload capacity may be the constraint. Do not assume the highest bitrate in a platform recommendation will be reliable on your connection.
2. Test a different YouTube ingest server
Use OBS’s server selection to test another available ingest server. If the result changes, the route to the original ingest may be involved. This is a reversible diagnostic, not proof that YouTube itself is at fault.

3. Try wired Ethernet if you are on Wi-Fi
Connect the PC to the router with Ethernet and test again. OBS warns that Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming and recommends a wired connection. A wired test helps isolate the local wireless link; it will not necessarily fix ISP congestion, a bad upstream route, an ingest issue, or encoder overload. If evidence points to a faulty cable, replacing that cable is a targeted test—not a general cure.
4. Review Windows network software and settings
- Temporarily test without a VPN, security software feature, or bundled network “optimization” utility that may affect streaming traffic. OBS specifically calls out utilities such as Lenovo Vantage Network Boost and Killer NIC software as possible factors.
- In OBS on Windows, open Settings → Advanced → Network. OBS lists Enable network optimizations and Enable TCP pacing as options that some users report can help.
- Dynamic bitrate adjustment can lower bitrate during congestion, which may reduce drops, but it reduces video quality and does not fix the underlying connection problem.
Test these options individually and revert a change if it has no benefit. Avoid treating IPv4-only or Bind to IP changes as universal optimizations: OBS lists them as troubleshooting options. Keep Bind to IP at Default unless testing indicates a reason to change it; if IPv4-only makes no difference, OBS advises returning to the default IPv4/IPv6 family.

5. Check drivers and network hardware before replacing anything
Check for current network drivers from your PC or motherboard manufacturer. A modem, router, cable, network card, switch, or extender can also be involved. Restarting a modem or router may help with connectivity problems, but if the fault is unclear, contact your ISP before buying replacement hardware. Persistent drops can originate in the route or congestion beyond your home network.
Keep YouTube output settings in perspective
YouTube’s published settings depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate. For H.264, its recommended bitrate range is 6–17 Mbps for 1080p60 and 5–14 Mbps for 1080p30; lower resolutions have lower ranges, and other codecs use different ranges. These are YouTube recommendations, not evidence that a particular connection can sustain the top of a range. Check the current guidance at YouTube’s live encoder settings, run a speed test, and test with representative motion and audio before relying on a profile for a long event.

YouTube’s guidance specifies RTMP or RTMPS transport; H.264, H.265, or AV1; up to 60 fps; CBR; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. These values help meet platform requirements, but changing codec or keyframe settings is not the first remedy for a rising network dropped-frames counter. Change them when Live Control Room reports a format or configuration error, or when you have another specific reason to test them.

- Run OBS as administrator.
- Check GPU-heavy processes and close or reduce unnecessary workloads.
- Cap the game’s frame rate or enable V-Sync, and lower demanding game graphics settings.
- Simplify scenes and sources that add rendering work.
- If needed, lower OBS output resolution or frame rate.
Use the OBS statistic that is actually elevated to guide the change. Lowering bitrate primarily targets network capacity; simplifying a scene or reducing frame rate targets local rendering or encoding demands. YouTube also recommends checking encoder errors and CPU load, and reviewing local archive playback when output quality looks or sounds poor. Its troubleshooting guidance is at YouTube Help.
Prepare a 24/7 stream for interruption and unnoticed failures
A stable counter during a short test does not guarantee uninterrupted operation over a day or longer. YouTube recommends continuously monitoring audio and video quality, verifying that the event is accessible, and confirming that a local archive file continues to grow. For a backup encoder setup, test failover in advance by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable, then confirm that the player switches to the backup. Follow YouTube’s live streaming tips for these operational checks.
If the picture or sound is poor in the local archive too, investigate the encoder, CPU/GPU load, and local output. If the encoder output appears healthy but delivery to YouTube is not, return to the connection checks and contact your ISP when local tests do not explain persistent trouble. No single OBS setting makes a 24/7 stream outage-proof.
Or let it run in the cloud
