First find where playback stops: play the same file outside OBS, check the OBS preview, inspect a local OBS recording or controlled stream, then compare the processed YouTube VOD. The fix depends on whether the source is OBS Media Source or VLC Video—and whether the problem is an early video cutoff, audio ending early, a frozen final frame, failure to restart, or a difference between OBS and YouTube. There is no verified universal fix for all of these symptoms.
Identify the source and the symptom
In the affected OBS scene, select the source and open its properties. Note whether it is a standard Media Source pointing to a local file or a VLC Video source using a playlist or URL. The controls and dependencies differ: OBS says VLC Video uses VLC libraries for extended media support, and 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. OBS Project: Media Sources.
Describe the failure precisely before changing settings. Does the picture stop before the file’s actual end, does only audio stop, does the last frame remain frozen, does the file fail to restart when the source appears, or does the finished YouTube VOD differ from the OBS preview? These are distinct symptoms and may occur at different points in the playback and delivery path.
Trace where playback ends
- Check the exact original file. Play it in a standalone media player and inspect its duration and final seconds. If the file itself is shorter than expected, scene settings cannot restore missing footage.
- Check the OBS preview. Play the same file or playlist in the affected scene and note the point where picture and audio stop. Record them separately if only one ends early.
- Make a short local recording or controlled stream test. Compare the resulting recording or viewer-side output with the preview. This helps establish whether the cutoff is already present in OBS output.
- Compare the processed YouTube VOD once available. A VOD that differs from the preview or outgoing output points to a different observation point; it does not, by itself, identify the cause.
An OBS issue report titled “VLC source cuts off the last part of output only (not in monitoring)” illustrates why preview and output should be compared. It documents a reported discrepancy, not a universal cause or fix. OBS Studio issue #11984.

Check the setting that matches your source
For a standard Media Source
- Confirm that the source points to the intended local file.
- Enable Loop only if you want the file to start over after it finishes. Loop repeats completed playback; it does not repair a file that ends earlier than expected.
- Use Restart playback when source becomes active when playback should restart as the source becomes visible. This is about visibility changes, not looping.
- Show nothing when playback ends controls what appears after playback completes; it does not change the file’s duration or restore content.

For VLC Video
- Confirm VLC is installed. OBS documents that VLC Video uses VLC libraries, and that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- Check the playlist entries and the Loop Playlist setting if you intend the playlist to repeat. Do not apply this VLC-specific playlist control to a standard Media Source.
- Try the same local file in a standard Media Source as a comparison. If the symptom changes, that narrows the source path involved; it does not prove that one source type is always the fix.
Use forum reports cautiously
In one OBS forum discussion, a user described local audio files skipping near the beginning and ending short in OBS. A later participant said that switching from VLC Video to standard Media Source worked in their case. This is an individual report, not an official fix or a controlled test. A separate forum thread describes VLC Video muting audio during the final one or two seconds of clips; a participant reported success saving to MKV and remuxing to MP4. That report concerns tail-end audio, not a demonstrated fix for video ending early, so do not assume remuxing will solve a video cutoff. What to include in an unresolved report
If the cutoff persists, collect enough detail to distinguish the source from the output path. Include:

- OBS version and operating system.
- Source type, whether it points to a local file, playlist, or URL, and the relevant playback settings.
- File format and expected versus observed end time; say whether audio, video, or both stop.
- Whether the cutoff appears in the standalone player, OBS preview, local recording or outgoing stream, and processed YouTube VOD.
- VLC version and architecture if the source is VLC Video.
- An OBS log from a reproduction of the problem.
Without the source type and a comparison across these observation points, the available reports do not support naming one root cause or prescribing one guaranteed fix.
