1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA single frozen frame does not, by itself, identify the cause. First determine which OBS source is involved and whether the freeze appears in OBS’s preview, a local recording, or the public YouTube stream. Then use OBS’s dropped-frame and rendering/encoding indicators to choose the right troubleshooting path.
First, identify what “media source” means
OBS uses distinct source types, and they do not share the same playback controls. An OBS Media Source plays a local media file; VLC Video is a separate source that uses VLC libraries; a webpage showing YouTube is typically a Browser Source; and a camera or capture device is another source type. Check the source name and its properties in the Sources list before changing settings. OBS’s Media Sources guide describes these distinctions.
If you use VLC Video, OBS requires VLC to be installed; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. That requirement is specific to VLC Video, not a general fix for a frozen frame.
Locate where the picture freezes
Compare three views: the OBS preview, a short local recording, and the public YouTube playback. Also note whether audio continues. These comparisons help identify the affected layer; they do not prove a cause on their own.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Preview only: investigate OBS rendering or source display behavior, and check whether the recording and YouTube playback remain normal.
- Recording and YouTube both freeze: the problem may be in source playback or in OBS’s rendering/encoding path; check the source and OBS indicators below.
- Only YouTube viewers see the freeze or buffering: compare OBS’s dropped-frame counter and ask whether the issue affects all viewers or only some. Viewer playback conditions can differ from OBS’s outgoing stream.
- Audio continues: record that detail when diagnosing; it helps distinguish a video display problem from a complete stream interruption.
Use the symptom to choose a troubleshooting branch
| What you observe | More relevant branch | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| A local file reached its end and its last image remains visible | Media Source playback completion | Check end-of-playback and restart properties. |
| OBS’s dropped-frame count rises or the stream disconnects | Connection to the streaming ingest server | Follow the connection checks below. |
| OBS reports rendering or encoding overload, or preview stutters when GPU demand is high | Local rendering or encoding performance | Reduce competing GPU work and scene/source load; adjust output settings if needed. |
| OBS shows no dropped frames, but viewers report buffering | Viewer connectivity or platform playback | Check whether reports are widespread and consult YouTube’s current streaming recommendations. |
| You do not yet have these observations | Cause not established | Record the source type, where the freeze appears, audio behavior, OBS statistics, and log. |
These branches can overlap. OBS specifically notes that viewers may experience buffering even when OBS is not dropping frames.
Check whether the source simply reached the end
This branch applies to a local file in Media Source. OBS documents that the final image can remain visible after playback ends. In the source’s properties, check whether playback reached the end and whether Restart playback when source becomes active is configured for your intended behavior. OBS describes Show nothing when playback ends as an option to prevent the last frame from remaining visible after local playback finishes. It is not evidence of a fix for a genuinely continuous YouTube stream.

OBS also documents Close file when inactive and hardware decoding controls. Treat changes to these options as targeted tests for the actual source and symptom, not universal remedies. If the source is VLC Video, Browser Source, or a capture device, use that source’s own properties rather than assuming Media Source settings apply.
Investigate dropped frames and disconnections
The OBS Project’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide, dated 2024-09-30, says: “Dropped frames means that your connection to remote server isn’t stable or you can’t keep up with your set bitrate.” A rising dropped-frame count or disconnection points toward the connection between OBS and the streaming server, not automatically toward a bad media file.

- Check the OBS dropped-frame counter. Note whether it rises during the freeze or disconnection.
- Compare bitrate with stable upload capacity. A connection that cannot sustain the configured bitrate can drop frames; use a bitrate your connection can maintain reliably.
- Test another server or service where available. This can help distinguish a route or ingest-server issue from a broader local connection problem.
- Review possible interference. Check VPNs, security software, network-management software, and network drivers.
- If you are on unstable Wi-Fi, test a wired connection. OBS recommends wired networking when Wi-Fi is unstable.
OBS describes dynamic bitrate as a way to accommodate congestion, not a root-cause fix. It can reduce stream quality while it adapts.
Check rendering and encoding load separately
A network problem is not the only cause of a bad stream. OBS needs GPU resources to composite and render scenes. Its Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide recommends reducing competing GPU work and simplifying scenes or sources. If performance indicators point to overload, consider lowering output resolution or frame rate as appropriate for the stream.

- Close or reduce GPU-intensive applications while streaming.
- Simplify scenes and reduce unnecessary or demanding sources.
- Lower output resolution or frame rate if the system cannot render the current settings reliably.
- Use OBS’s rendering and encoding indicators to confirm whether a change helps.
A frozen-frame symptom alone does not establish that the computer needs a GPU upgrade.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If only viewers report buffering
Check OBS’s dropped-frame counter first. If it is not rising, the stream may be reaching the ingest server normally while some viewers encounter playback or connectivity problems. OBS’s Stream Buffering Troubleshooting guide distinguishes viewer-side buffering from dropped frames in OBS. Consider whether reports come from one viewer or many, and review YouTube’s platform recommendations rather than changing source properties without evidence.

Collect useful evidence before asking for help
OBS’s OBS Studio Overview Guide recommends including a log when reporting problems. Provide the source type and its relevant properties, whether audio continues, whether the freeze appears in preview/local recording/YouTube playback, and the OBS dropped-frame and rendering/encoding indicators. A log and these observations let someone assess the right branch instead of guessing from the frozen image alone.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping on YouTube continuously, rather than troubleshoot a live OBS setup, StreamNeo runs the stream in the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded video as made, at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.
