Usually, leave “Use hardware decoding when available” off unless a controlled test on your streaming PC shows a clear benefit. OBS lists this Media Source option as off by default. It can move decoding of supported video files to a compatible GPU, but that does not guarantee lower overall load or more reliable 24/7 playback. Check the source format and compare both settings under your actual stream workload.
What the Media Source setting does
OBS Media Source can play video files such as MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF and WebM, as well as audio files such as MP3, AAC, OGG and WAV. In the source’s properties, Use hardware decoding when available asks a supported GPU to decode certain file types when it has the appropriate built-in decoder. OBS documents the setting as off by default. OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation describes the option as setting the GPU to perform hardware decoding on certain file types when the GPU has the appropriate hardware decoder.
This is a per-source decoding choice, not the same as choosing a hardware encoder for your outgoing stream. Enabling GPU decoding does not, by itself, change the encoder selected for the broadcast.
When to leave it off—and when to test it
Leave the option off if playback is already smooth and CPU load is manageable, or if you do not know whether the GPU supports the source’s codec and profile. Try it when CPU load is a suspected bottleneck and the machine has a suitable decoder, but keep it only if the full OBS workload behaves better with it enabled.

#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Hardware decoding is not automatically faster. FFmpeg’s hardware-acceleration documentation cautions that acceleration may have no effect when unsupported, may not beat software decoding on a modern CPU, and can add a cost when decoded frames must be copied from GPU memory to system memory. Also account for OBS’s own GPU work: compositing and rendering scenes use GPU resources too. If the GPU is already under pressure, shifting video decoding onto it may not help the stream overall. Judge performance by the whole workload, not CPU usage alone. OBS’s known-issues guidance

How to test it for a continuous stream
- Identify the actual media format. Check the source’s codec and profile, not just its filename extension. Confirm that the GPU, driver and operating system support decoding that specific format. The OBS option applies only to certain file types and requires an appropriate decoder.
- Set up a fair comparison. Use the same media, scenes, sources and output settings for both runs. Change only the hardware-decoding checkbox so that any difference is easier to attribute.
- Test with the option off, then on. In the Media Source properties, compare playback continuity and looping, CPU load, GPU decoder and rendering load, OBS rendering or encoding problems, and relevant logs.
- Keep the setting only if the result helps. If it reduces a real bottleneck without introducing playback, rendering or stability problems, it may suit that setup. If results are neutral, inconsistent or worse, leave it off. This is a practical test, not an OBS guarantee.
- Use a representative run before relying on it. The available documentation does not specify a universal test duration or prove that either mode improves 24/7 uptime. A short successful playback check is not evidence of long-run reliability.
What to watch for during the comparison
- Codec support: The extension alone does not establish that the GPU can decode the file’s codec and profile.
- CPU headroom: A lower CPU load matters only if it relieves a real constraint in the overall stream workload.
- GPU headroom: Check both decoding and OBS rendering/compositing. Less CPU use can coincide with greater GPU pressure.
- Playback behavior: Look for freezes, interruptions or failures to loop with the same media and scene setup.
- Compatibility and stability: Include the system’s GPU, driver and operating system in your assessment, and review OBS logs for relevant errors.
An OBS GitHub report describes one HEVC SRT/RIST case that froze and crashed on exit with hardware decoding enabled. It is a specific report, not a failure rate or a prediction for local files, other codecs, hardware or current releases. OBS Studio issue tracker
Common problems and what to do
Enabling it does not reduce CPU use
The GPU may not support decoding the source’s actual codec or profile, or the acceleration path may not help that workload. Verify compatibility and compare GPU activity as well as CPU load. If there is no useful improvement, turn the option off.

Playback becomes less smooth or OBS reports rendering problems
The GPU may be contending with OBS rendering, or the enabled decoding path may not work well with the system’s driver or media format. Return to the off setting and compare again under identical conditions; do not treat lower CPU use as a sufficient reason to keep a setting that disrupts playback.
The stream is stable in a brief check but not over time
A brief check cannot establish 24/7 reliability. The reviewed sources provide no general uptime comparison for the setting, so assess behavior across a representative run and avoid claiming that hardware decoding guarantees continuous operation.
