Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor one video that should repeat, use OBS Media Source and enable Loop. For a sequence of files—or a playlist that needs shuffle—use VLC Video Source. VLC playback requires VLC installed, and its visibility settings can pause or stop playback when you switch scenes. Neither source by itself keeps a YouTube live event running: OBS sends the encoder feed, and the stream depends separately on the encoder, network connection and YouTube.
Which OBS source should you choose?
| Need | Better starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Repeat one local video | Media Source | It has a Loop property for a single file. OBS documents Loop as off by default. |
| Play multiple video files in sequence | VLC Video Source | It supports playlist items and separate playlist loop controls. |
| Shuffle several files | VLC Video Source | It provides a Shuffle Playlist control; the documented default is off. |
| Keep playback behavior simple and avoid an extra VLC dependency | Media Source, if one file is enough | VLC Video Source depends on installed VLC libraries. A 64-bit OBS installation requires 64-bit VLC. |
These are playback-feature differences, not evidence that one source is universally more reliable for a continuous church stream. Test the actual scene and encoder setup you plan to use.
Set up a single repeating video with Media Source
- Add the source: In the intended OBS scene, use Sources > + > Media Source. Give it a recognizable name and select the video file.
- Enable looping: In the source properties, turn on Loop. OBS documents this option as off by default, so verify it rather than assuming the file will repeat.
- Check the end-to-start transition: Preview the final seconds and the restart. Confirm the picture and audio behave as intended, including whether the transition creates a pause or abrupt sound.
- Keep the source active as intended: Confirm the source is in the scene that remains on air. Switching scenes changes source visibility and may change playback behavior depending on source settings.
Media Source is the straightforward choice when the same file should repeat. It does not turn the file into a YouTube event or control when that event ends.
Set up a multi-file playlist with VLC Video Source
- Install the matching VLC version: VLC Video Source uses VLC libraries. OBS says a 64-bit OBS installation requires 64-bit VLC. If the source is missing or cannot load, check this dependency first.
- Add the source: In the OBS scene, choose Sources > + > VLC Video Source, then add the video files to its playlist in the order you want them played.
- Review playlist controls: Set Loop Playlist on if the list should repeat. OBS documents that setting as on by default. Set Shuffle Playlist on only if items should play in a randomized order; its documented default is off.
- Review visibility behavior: VLC Video Source has a setting that determines whether playback stops when hidden and restarts when visible. OBS documents the default as Stop when not visible, restart when visible. Check this setting before using scene transitions; a source hidden by a scene change may stop and restart rather than continue playing.
- Test the whole playlist: Check the order, audio levels and picture at each transition, including the last-to-first boundary. Test the scene changes you expect to use during the service.
For the question “How do I loop a playlist in OBS?”, use VLC Video Source, add the files, and confirm Loop Playlist is enabled. If the source disappears when you switch scenes, inspect its visibility behavior and the scene layout.

Keep source playback separate from the YouTube live event
The OBS source controls playback inside a scene. The encoder sends the resulting audio and video to YouTube using a stream URL and stream key; YouTube documents that the live stream ends when the encoder stops sending content. A looping file therefore does not guarantee that the encoder stays connected, the network remains available, or YouTube keeps the event live.
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the live stream and obtain its stream URL and key. Follow YouTube’s encoder workflow at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Configure OBS to send to that YouTube event using the stream details. Treat the OBS media source and the YouTube event as separate parts of the setup.
- Before the service, preview the feed in YouTube Studio and verify that the expected video and audio arrive. YouTube recommends testing with representative motion and audio, selecting quality that the connection can sustain, and monitoring stream health.
- Check YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions for the codec, resolution and frame rate you choose. Values depend on those settings and guidance can change, so use the live documentation rather than relying on an old bitrate table.
- Keep an operator or monitoring plan for the encoder, connection and live event. OBS also provides encoding performance troubleshooting if the computer cannot maintain the configured output.
Copyright and content checks for church video
Before streaming recorded music, sermon clips, videos or other third-party material, confirm that your church has the rights needed to use it in a YouTube livestream. A file playing correctly in OBS does not establish permission to broadcast it. YouTube’s live streaming tips cover preparation and monitoring; review applicable YouTube policies and rights for the specific material you plan to use.
