Short answer: OBS and a VPS are not alternatives at the same level: OBS is encoder software, while a VPS is a rented remote computer that can run OBS or another encoder. Start with local OBS if you already have a suitable computer, reliable power and sustained upload, and can monitor it. Choose a VPS when remote, unattended operation matters and you have verified the instance’s encoder capability, outbound bandwidth and restart controls. Neither option alone guarantees an uninterrupted stream.

A VPS does not eliminate encoder setup or maintenance; it moves the computer running the encoder off-site. There is no established head-to-head reliability or total-cost comparison for these options in India. Treat the table as a planning framework, not a performance ranking.
Choose based on your actual India setup
Use local OBS when your home setup is dependable
Local OBS is the straightforward starting point if the computer is already capable, can stay powered, and your internet connection can sustain the stream’s upload bitrate with spare capacity. It also gives you direct access to local audio sources and files. Plan for power cuts and router or ISP interruptions: a UPS may help with brief outages, but it does not replace a stable internet connection or a restart and monitoring plan.
Use a VPS when remote operation is worth the added administration
A VPS can keep the encoder away from your home power and internet connection, but the stream still depends on the VPS provider, the instance’s resources and its network route to YouTube. Before building around one, confirm the precise instance configuration and test the intended output. Do not assume an inexpensive CPU-only instance can encode every OBS scene, resolution or frame rate. OBS cautions that meeting its basic system requirements does not guarantee streaming or recording capability; its system-requirements page is dated 2021-08-25.

For either choice, assess your actual ISP route and sustained upload, not just the advertised download speed. YouTube does not specify an India-only encoder setting or require an India-based VPS in the guidance cited here. A nearby region may be worth evaluating, but route quality and the provider’s capacity should be checked rather than assumed.
Check YouTube eligibility and set up the stream
YouTube’s live-streaming guidance says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. Follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. In an encoder workflow, configure the stream in Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and key into the encoder, preview the incoming feed, then start sending it.

- Prepare the channel and broadcast. Confirm live-streaming eligibility and decide whether the show will be a continuous playlist, a scheduled broadcast or a mix. YouTube recommends setting up an encoder stream at least two hours before an event.
- Configure the encoder connection. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the stream and use its stream URL and stream key in OBS or your chosen encoder. Keep the key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to that stream.
- Set video and audio output. Choose the resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate and keyframe interval based on the source and the upload capacity you have measured. Use RTMPS where supported.
- Preview before going live. Start the encoder and check the Live Control Room preview for picture, sound and stream health before making the broadcast public. YouTube recommends starting an encoder 15 minutes before a scheduled event.
- Check the viewer experience and failure path. Confirm the event is visible on the channel or watch page and on a mobile device. Test the failover or restart procedure before relying on it, then set up routine checks and alerts appropriate to a 24/7 operation.
YouTube’s event recommendations are aimed at scheduled streams; for continuous operation, translate them into a repeatable launch checklist, monitoring, alerts and recovery steps. They do not guarantee uninterrupted service.
Set bitrate, keyframes and transport for a stable feed
Match the bitrate to sustained upload
YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and leaving about 20% upload headroom. Upload capacity can be lower than download capacity, and a shared connection may leave less capacity for the stream than a speed-test headline suggests. The following are YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrates in its encoder guidance, accessed in 2026; they are platform recommendations, not guarantees for any particular connection.

Choose the setting for your intended resolution and frame rate rather than copying a number without context. If you send a primary and backup stream, YouTube says to account for the primary bitrate plus the backup bitrate, with the recommended headroom on top.
Use a compatible encoder profile and keyframe interval
YouTube’s encoder reference covers RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265 and AV1 options, supports up to 60 fps, and recommends constant bitrate. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Exact options depend on the encoder and workflow; confirm that your chosen encoder and instance support the codec and output you select.

Prefer RTMPS when available
YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the connection between the encoder and Google’s servers. HLS is available for certain codec and HDR needs, but it is not a general outage fix: it uses segmented delivery and has higher latency than a continuous RTMP feed. YouTube’s documented HLS requirements include 1–4 second segments, TS format, rolling playlists with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST/PUT.

Do not assume a 24-hour broadcast becomes one complete replay
YouTube’s encoder help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That does not establish what will happen to every stream lasting 12 hours or longer, so do not promise that a single 24-hour-plus broadcast will produce one complete replay. If a complete archive matters, schedule or segment the broadcast, test the current Live Control Room behavior, and keep a separate backup recording or archive workflow before relying on it.

Clear rights for the full live and archived use
YouTube’s livestream terms make the provider responsible for holding the rights needed for worldwide exploitation of live and archived content and for complying with applicable laws and territory requirements. Check that permissions cover podcast music, clips, recordings and guest contributions for the uses you intend. Those terms do not determine which Indian registrations or licences apply to a particular podcast, its content or its business structure; seek India-specific advice where needed.
Do not budget on guaranteed live-ad revenue
For channels eligible to monetize, YouTube lists ads, Super Chat and Super Stickers, and channel memberships as live monetization options. YouTube cautions that ad slots are not guaranteed to serve. A continuous stream does not by itself establish eligibility or guarantee earnings.
Troubleshoot the failures most likely to interrupt a 24/7 stream
