If OBS skips the first gaming VOD in a playlist, first identify the source type: OBS’s built-in VLC Video source supports playlists, while the standard Media Source plays an individual file. Their settings are different, so the right fix depends on which source your scene uses. Check the steps below before changing YouTube’s stream settings: YouTube’s HLS playlist requirements concern video segments sent by an encoder, not the order of files in an OBS playlist.
1. Identify the source that is playing the VODs
In OBS, select the scene where playback happens and inspect the source in the Sources list. The source type determines which settings apply:
- Media Source: intended for an individual media file. It is not the built-in playlist source.
- VLC Video: OBS’s built-in source for a playlist of media items. OBS describes it as letting you create a playlist, unlike Media Source. See the OBS Media Sources documentation.
- Media Playlist Source: a separate OBS plugin, not the same thing as VLC Video. Its requirements and release history are listed on the OBS forum resource page and plugin updates page.
Do not apply VLC Video controls to Media Source, or assume the plugin behaves exactly like either built-in source.
2. Check VLC Video playlist setup
Confirm VLC and OBS have matching architectures
VLC Video requires VLC to be installed. OBS’s documentation specifies that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. If VLC Video is missing or does not work as expected, verify that the installed VLC architecture matches OBS before troubleshooting the list itself.

Verify the first item and playback options
Open the VLC Video source’s properties and check the playlist order directly. Confirm that the gaming VOD you expect to play first is actually the first entry, and turn off shuffle if playback must follow a specific order. The documented defaults for VLC Video are loop on and shuffle off.
Also review what happens when the source is hidden. OBS documents the default visibility behavior as stopping playback when the source is not visible and restarting it when it becomes visible. If a scene transition hides and then reveals the source, this behavior may affect when playback starts; it does not, by itself, prove why a particular playlist item is skipped.

Review other VLC Video settings only if they fit the symptom
VLC Video also exposes network caching and audio-track settings. These are worth checking when the issue involves network-hosted media or audio, but the available documentation does not identify either setting as a general fix for skipping the first local playlist item.
3. Check the Media Playlist Source plugin and version
If the source is the plugin, record your OBS version and the plugin version, then compare them with the plugin resource’s stated requirements and update notes. A plugin change may matter: the 0.1.3 release notes, dated April 13, 2025, list a fix for continuing to the next item after a scene transition and another for continuing when a file path repeats. Those are specific fixes, not confirmation that the plugin causes this exact first-item symptom.

If the plugin does not appear in OBS’s Add Source menu after installation, check the resource page’s requirements and installation information. Do not substitute VLC Video instructions for plugin installation or settings.
4. Reproduce the skip safely before going live
- Make a short test playlist from harmless local video files and note the exact order, including whether any file path appears more than once.
- In the same OBS scene and source type used for the gaming VODs, start playback and observe whether the first entry starts at all.
- Test the scene transition that normally occurs before the skip. Note whether the source becomes hidden and visible again, and whether the behavior changes when the transition is removed from the test.
- Change one relevant setting at a time—such as shuffle or visibility behavior for VLC Video—so you can tell which change affects playback.
- Repeat the test before using the setup in a live broadcast. This is a diagnostic procedure, not a guaranteed fix.
5. Separate OBS playlist behavior from YouTube ingestion
YouTube’s HLS ingestion guide describes an encoder’s live media segments and sequence numbers. YouTube’s live streaming Help page covers YouTube live-streaming guidance. Neither establishes why OBS would skip the first item in a local VLC Video or plugin playlist. Start by checking the OBS source and its own list rather than changing HLS segment settings for a local playlist-order problem.

6. If it still skips the first VOD
There is no single documented fix established for every report of this symptom. Before asking for help, collect the information that can distinguish a source configuration issue from a version-specific plugin issue:
- The exact source type: Media Source, VLC Video, or Media Playlist Source.
- Your OBS and, if applicable, plugin versions, plus your operating system.
- The playlist order and whether the same file path appears more than once.
- Whether a scene transition or source visibility change happens before the skip.
- An OBS log and concise steps that reproduce the behavior.
An OBS forum answer about a single-file Media Source recommends unchecking Restart playback when source becomes active when the goal is to resume a file after switching away and back. That advice concerns Media Source activation behavior; it is not a verified fix for a playlist skipping its first item.
