First identify the source type in OBS: the built-in VLC Video source, the third-party Media Playlist Source plugin, and a Browser Source refresh in different ways. For the plugin, change a setting and save its properties to refresh added-folder contents. For VLC Video, check whether the new files appear in the source’s playlist; OBS documents no dedicated playlist refresh button or continuous folder scan.
Identify which OBS source you are using
In the OBS Sources list, select the source and inspect its name or open its properties. The refresh fix depends on whether it is VLC Video, the Media Playlist Source plugin, Browser Source, or an ordinary Media Source.
- VLC Video: OBS’s built-in source for playing a media playlist. It requires VLC installed on the system to appear as an available source, according to the OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation.
- Media Playlist Source: a separate, third-party plugin. Its folder-refresh behavior is not the same as VLC Video’s.
- Browser Source: displays a web page. Its refresh controls reload that page, not a VLC playlist.
- Media Source: plays a media file; options such as restarting playback when active control playback rather than scanning a folder for playlist additions.
Refresh a Media Playlist Source plugin folder
- In Sources, open the properties for Media Playlist Source.
- If your playlist uses an added folder, change a setting in the source properties, then save them. The plugin author’s listing says this triggers a refresh of folder contents; it does not describe continuous automatic folder scanning.
- If the filename shown in the properties looks stale, close and reopen the properties. The plugin listing says reopening refreshes that displayed filename.
- If the source is unavailable or incompatible, check the plugin listing’s current OBS requirement before installing or updating it. Its update notes say version 0.1.0 raised the minimum requirement to OBS 31; do not assume that requirement is unchanged in later plugin releases.
Check a built-in VLC Video playlist
- In Sources, select the VLC Video source and open Properties.
- Inspect the playlist entries. Confirm the newly added videos are listed and that their file paths point to the intended files. If an entry is missing, add or correct it in the playlist rather than refreshing a browser page.
- Confirm VLC is installed. The OBS Project documentation says 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- If a listed video is not playing as expected, check the playlist order and the Loop and Shuffle options. These affect playback, not whether OBS discovers newly added files.
The OBS Project’s Media Sources page describes VLC Video playlist features, but does not document a dedicated playlist refresh button or continuous folder scan. A browser-cache refresh or a single-file Media Source restart is therefore not a documented way to update a VLC playlist.
When a Browser Source or Media Source is mistaken for a playlist
Browser Source
Refresh cache of current page reloads the Browser Source page. The option to refresh a page when its scene becomes active also applies to page content. Neither is documented as a VLC playlist refresh control in OBS’s Browser Source guidance.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Media Source
Media Source playback options, such as restarting playback when the source becomes active or closing its file while inactive, apply to the media file’s playback lifecycle. They do not provide a documented folder-scan or playlist-refresh function.
Common symptoms and what to check
| What you see | Likely check or fix |
|---|---|
| A new file in a plugin folder does not appear | For Media Playlist Source, change a setting and save its properties to trigger the documented folder refresh. |
| A new file does not appear in VLC Video’s playlist | Open VLC Video properties and inspect the playlist entries and paths. OBS documentation does not specify a folder-rescan button for this source. |
| VLC Video is missing from the source options | Install VLC, matching the OBS architecture. OBS specifically states that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. |
| A browser refresh did not update the video playlist | Check the actual source type: Browser Source reloads a page, not a VLC playlist. |
| A Media Source restarts but new folder videos remain absent | Restarting playback is not a folder scan. Check whether the source is actually VLC Video or the playlist plugin. |
| The plugin will not load after an OBS update | Check the plugin author’s current listing and version requirements; the listing’s version 0.1.0 notes set OBS 31 as the minimum. |
