OBS Playlist vs. FFmpeg Concat for a YouTube Live Loop in India

Use OBS VLC Video for a visual looping playlist; use FFmpeg concat for a scriptable sequence of compatible files. Both need YouTube encoder setup, testing, and monitoring.

Choose OBS Studio’s VLC Video source if you want a visual playlist with scenes and overlays; choose FFmpeg’s concat demuxer if you want a scriptable sequence and can keep the source files compatible. Both send an encoded stream to YouTube using your stream URL and key. Neither bypasses YouTube’s channel eligibility, encoder settings, copyright checks, or the need to monitor the stream. The documented workflow is not India-specific; your account controls and upload connection determine what is available and sustainable.

At a glance: which workflow fits?

Decision OBS VLC Video source FFmpeg concat demuxer
Best fit A creator who wants a GUI, playlist controls, scenes, and overlays. An operator comfortable with command-line configuration and repeatable scripts.
Playlist behavior Built-in Loop Playlist control; Shuffle Playlist is also available. Reads files in the order listed; repetition requires command configuration or a supervising process.
Setup Add a VLC Video source and local files. VLC must be installed; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. Write a text file using concat syntax and configure FFmpeg’s input, encoding, and output.
Media constraints The VLC source supports extended media formats. OBS’s separate Media Source is for a single file. Files must have matching streams, including codecs and time bases, for the concat demuxer’s virtual concatenation model.
Production controls OBS scenes, overlays, source visibility, and other production elements remain available. Flexible and automatable, but configuration, supervision, and recovery are the operator’s responsibility.

The VLC Video source is the OBS option designed for a playlist. Loop Playlist is on by default and Shuffle Playlist is off by default. You can also adjust network caching, audio-track selection, subtitles, and how playback behaves when the source is hidden. OBS’s media-source documentation describes the source options.

FFmpeg’s concat demuxer virtually joins packets from listed files and adjusts timestamps between them. It is not a guarantee of seamless joins for unlike media. The FFmpeg documentation says, “All files must have the same streams (same codecs, same time base, etc.).” Differences can mean you need to normalize or re-encode files first; inaccurate or estimated durations can also create artifacts or timestamp gaps. See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.

Set up a looping playlist in OBS

  1. Install OBS Studio and VLC. Match their architectures: OBS documents that 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC for the VLC source to be available.
  2. Create a scene for the stream. In OBS, add a VLC Video source, then add your local video or audio files in the order you want them played.
  3. Set playback behavior. Enable Loop Playlist to repeat the list. Leave Shuffle Playlist off for the listed order, or enable it if you want random ordering. Review the source’s visibility behavior, audio track, and network caching as relevant to your media.
  4. Check the preview and audio. Confirm the picture appears as expected, the audio meters move, and the playlist order and loop behavior are correct before going live.
  5. Connect OBS to YouTube. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the stream, then copy its stream URL and stream key into OBS’s streaming configuration. Treat the key like a password; do not put it in screenshots, public posts, or shared scripts.
  6. Set and test the encoder. Use YouTube’s encoder recommendations as a starting point. Check that your upload connection can sustain the selected bitrate, then verify the preview and stream-health feedback. Run a private or unlisted test before a public event.
  7. Monitor the event. Watch stream health and listen for audio problems. Plan to stop the encoder when the event is over.

For a single looping file rather than a playlist, OBS’s ordinary Media Source has a Loop setting; it is a different source from VLC Video.

Set up a file sequence with FFmpeg concat

  1. Create the concat list. Make a text file whose first line is exactly ffconcat version 1.0, followed by one file directive per input, for example:
    ffconcat version 1.0
    file 'clip-01.mp4'
    file 'clip-02.mp4'
  2. Check that the files match. Confirm that the items have compatible stream layouts, codecs, time bases, and reliable durations. If they do not, normalize or re-encode them before expecting continuous output.
  3. Configure input and output. Point FFmpeg at the concat list, then set output encoding to YouTube’s current ingest recommendations. The precise command depends on the media codecs, audio tracks, FFmpeg build, operating system, and ingest protocol; there is no universally correct command for every playlist.
  4. Review path safety. The concat demuxer’s safe option defaults to 1, which rejects unsafe paths and directives. Prefer keeping this default when your file paths permit it; take care if changing the behavior.
  5. Provide YouTube’s stream details securely. Configure the YouTube stream URL and key in the output without exposing the key in logs or scripts shared with others.
  6. Test before the event. Use a private or unlisted stream, check audio and video continuity, and review YouTube’s stream-health feedback.
  7. Plan for unattended operation. If the process must run without supervision, arrange process supervision, reconnect behavior, host-restart handling, and alerts separately. The documentation does not establish that FFmpeg or OBS is universally more reliable for a 24/7 run.

This is a setup outline, not a tested command. The right FFmpeg configuration depends on your files and environment.

YouTube Live requirements and encoder settings

YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a stream URL and key. Its current help recommends RTMPS for encoder streaming and says resolution, frame rate, and bitrate should fit both the selected output and your connection. YouTube lists 5 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p, 30 fps and 10 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 at 1080p, 30 fps as recommended bitrates. These are platform recommendations, not a promise that a particular Indian ISP connection can sustain them. Test your actual upload with headroom and consult YouTube’s encoder settings and encoder setup help. The general encoder table lists frame rates up to 60 fps.

YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days to stream. Set up the encoder ahead of time, start it before a scheduled event, check the preview, and monitor audio and video quality. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips. Account-specific controls and availability should be checked in YouTube Studio; the reviewed guidance does not specify a separate India-only OBS or FFmpeg workflow.

Copyright and preflight checks

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match can cause a placeholder image, a temporary interruption, or termination. Even if you have a licence, the rights owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Limiting a stream to territories where you hold rights does not by itself guarantee uninterrupted streaming. Confirm your rights and any required allowlisting before looping material. Read YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance.

India-specific considerations

The documented OBS and FFmpeg workflows are the same general local-file workflows rather than India-specific variants. There is no supported comparative result showing that one works better across Indian networks. Check your channel’s current Live Control Room options and test from the network and machine you will actually use; connection capacity and account controls can vary.

Also keep local playlists distinct from YouTube’s HLS ingest protocol. An OBS VLC playlist is a list of local media files, and an FFmpeg concat file is a demuxer input list. YouTube HLS ingest instead uses a segmented upload protocol with media playlists, ordered segments, and HTTPS requests. They are not interchangeable workflows. See YouTube’s HLS documentation.

Troubleshooting common problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check
VLC Video source is missing in OBS VLC is not installed or its architecture does not match OBS. Install VLC; for 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC.
OBS playlist does not repeat or plays in an unexpected order Loop Playlist or Shuffle Playlist is set differently than intended. Review both controls on the VLC Video source and confirm the list order.
FFmpeg concat output has gaps or artifacts at joins Input streams differ or file durations are inaccurate. Check streams, codecs, time bases, and durations; normalize or re-encode incompatible files.
Concat list rejects a path or directive The default safe-path checks reject it. Review the list paths and directives. Keep safe=1 where possible; only change safety behavior with care.
YouTube preview or stream health is poor Bitrate, resolution, or frame rate may exceed the connection’s stable capacity, or the encoder configuration may not suit the ingest. Review YouTube’s current encoder recommendations, test upload capacity with headroom, and adjust based on stream-health feedback.
Stream is interrupted after a content match YouTube detected third-party material; a licence alone may not ensure Content ID allowlisting. Confirm rights and required allowlisting with the rights owner before restarting the loop.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is simply to keep uploaded videos looping on YouTube, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It keeps the stream running without a computer at home, supports your upload as made up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; the monthly option is $9.99 per month. It streams uploaded videos to YouTube, not from a camera. Start the free first day with StreamNeo.
