Use a dedicated extracted OBS folder, then pair a stream-specific profile with a scene collection. Portable mode isolates OBS configuration; it does not make media files portable or keep a stream running through crashes, computer shutdowns, or connection failures.
What OBS portable mode does—and what it does not
Portable mode stores OBS configuration alongside the application, so a separate extracted copy can have its own profiles and scene collections without mixing them with another OBS setup. It is a way to isolate configuration, not a 24/7 reliability system. The documented launch options can request that OBS start streaming, but the OBS documentation does not describe a watchdog, automatic failure recovery, or a YouTube-specific uptime procedure.
Set up a dedicated portable OBS folder on Windows
- Download the OBS ZIP package. Use the ZIP distribution rather than installing another copy over your regular OBS setup.
- Extract it to a user folder. The OBS guide advises against extracting to
Program Files. Give this copy a clear folder name so it is easy to distinguish from your ordinary OBS installation. OBS Project: Running in Portable Mode - Enable portable mode. In the extracted application root, create an empty file named
portable_modeorportable_mode.txt. Alternatively, launchbin/64bit/obs64.exewith the--portableargument. - Open this copy of OBS and create the stream configuration. Make a profile for the stream’s output and video settings, and a scene collection for its scenes and sources. Keep the two distinct: the profile does not save scenes, and the scene collection does not save output settings.
- Check the active profile and collection before going live. Use names that make the dedicated YouTube configuration easy to identify, and confirm both are selected in this portable copy before starting the stream.
Use a profile and scene collection together
A profile stores most OBS settings related to output, including Stream, Video, and Output settings. OBS gives separate output configurations for services as an example of why profiles are useful; profiles do not contain scenes. OBS Project: Profiles

A scene collection stores scenes and sources, including global audio sources, but not output settings. OBS describes separate collections as useful for different streams or purposes. OBS Project: Scene Collections
For a dedicated YouTube setup, create or select both deliberately: the profile for the stream’s settings, the collection for its visual and audio arrangement. Switching one does not switch the other.

Keep scene media available when moving the folder
Portable mode does not bundle media referenced by scenes. The OBS Project’s guide states: “At this time, files used within the scene collection (images, media) are not portable, even when in portable mode.” OBS Project: Running in Portable Mode
If you relocate the portable folder or use it on another machine, image and media sources may stop resolving because their files remain external. Update the paths in the scene collection JSON or use a common path accessible from each location. A portable OBS folder alone does not carry those source files with it.

Launch a chosen profile and collection
OBS documents launch parameters for portable mode, profile selection, collection selection, and starting a stream. The documented switches include --portable (or -p), --profile "name", --collection "name", and --startstreaming. Preserve the exact names of your saved profile and collection in the arguments. See the OBS Project launch parameters guide for the documented options.
For example, a command can be structured as "C:pathtoobs64.exe" --portable --profile "YouTube 24/7" --collection "YouTube Scenes" --startstreaming. Replace the example path and names with the actual executable location and saved names on your PC. This requests the selections and startup action; it is not a mechanism for restarting OBS or recovering a dropped stream.

Test launch arguments before relying on them unattended
A Windows user report opened on September 23, 2026 describes OBS 32.2.2 portable mode retaining the previously active profile and collection despite --profile and --collection arguments. That report is version-specific and does not establish a general OBS defect. OBS forum report
Before using a launch command unattended, test it with your installed OBS version. Verify visibly that the intended profile and scene collection are active before letting the stream start.

Common problems and fixes
- Your regular OBS settings appear instead of a separate setup: Confirm you launched the extracted ZIP copy and that the empty portable-mode file is in that copy’s application root, or start it with
--portable. - Scenes or sources are missing after moving the folder: Portable mode does not include referenced media. Restore the files at an accessible location and update the scene collection’s paths or use a common path.
- The right profile is selected but the wrong scenes appear: Profiles and scene collections are separate. Select and verify the intended collection as well as the profile.
- Launch arguments do not select the expected setup: Check spelling and exact saved names, then confirm selections in the running OBS window. The reported OBS 32.2.2 behavior is a reason to test your own version rather than assume the switches worked.
- You expected portable mode to keep streaming after a failure: Portable mode only isolates configuration. The documented switches do not provide a watchdog or automatic recovery system.
