On Windows, OBS portable mode keeps OBS configuration with the application, but it does not bundle scene media or replace separate backups of your Profile, Scene Collection, plugins, and referenced assets. For a recoverable setup, copy the portable OBS folder, export the Profile, preserve the Scene Collection and its media, and test a restore before relying on the PC.
What to back up—and what each copy contains
These backups cover different parts of an OBS setup; none should be treated as a complete substitute for the others.

Set up OBS portable mode on Windows
- Download the OBS ZIP distribution and extract it to a folder you control. OBS advises against extracting the portable installation into Program Files.
- In the extracted root folder, create an empty file named
portable_modeorportable_mode.txt. Alternatively, launchbin/64bit/obs64.exewith the--portableargument. - Open OBS and confirm that it is using the intended portable configuration before setting up or changing the playlist PC.
- Keep a second copy of the portable folder as part of your backup. A copy on separate storage is a practical way to protect against losing the PC or its drive; OBS does not prescribe a particular backup destination.
OBS documents portable mode for Windows. Its current portable-mode guidance says macOS and Linux portable mode are unsupported.
Build a recoverable backup
- Export the active Profile. Use OBS’s Profile export function to save its stream, video, and output settings as JSON. Keep that file separately from the portable-folder copy.
- Preserve the Scene Collection. Back up the active Scene Collection separately; a Profile export does not include scenes.
- Copy every referenced asset. Check each scene for external images and media, then copy those files and note where they belong. Portable mode does not bundle them, and moving the installation can break paths.
- Record plugins. Make a list of plugin names and versions. For a Windows portable installation, the current plugin guidance uses a
pluginsfolder in the portable root; olderobs-pluginslayouts are marked legacy. Plugins installed under ProgramData are ignored for portable launches. Check compatibility and installation paths when restoring. - Make a second copy and verify it. Copy the portable folder and separate backup files to another storage location. Check that the copied files open or are present, and test restoration on the intended PC before depending on the setup.
Restore and test before unattended use
- Place the portable OBS folder where you intend to run it, outside Program Files, and launch it in portable mode using the marker file or
--portable. - Restore the Scene Collection and Profile as separate items, then check that the intended Profile is active.
- Restore plugins only after checking their compatibility, version, and portable installation paths.
- Open the scenes and inspect each source. Repair file paths for missing media or images and confirm that the expected assets load.
- Run a test launch and verify the configuration before relying on it for a long-running stream.
OBS documents the --startstreaming launch parameter. For automated launches such as Windows scheduled tasks, its launch guidance says to set the working directory to the folder containing obs64.exe. That documents how to request stream startup; it does not establish that the YouTube account, stream key, playlist source, restart behavior, or 24/7 availability will work unattended.

What this backup plan does not guarantee
A portable folder and exports make OBS configuration easier to preserve and restore; they do not prove that a YouTube playlist will restart after a failure or remain live continuously. The OBS guidance cited here establishes portable-mode setup, Profile scope, plugin locations, and launch syntax, but not YouTube Live rules, playlist-specific configuration, or reliable 24/7 recovery practices.
