OBS’s reconnect status describes its connection attempt; YouTube’s stream health and incoming preview show whether YouTube is receiving a usable signal. Read YouTube’s exact error, then follow the matching branch below.
1. Check what YouTube is receiving

Open YouTube Studio and go to the stream in Live Control Room.

Read the stream status and any displayed error. Check whether an incoming preview appears. YouTube says stream health and analytics are available in Live Control Room; its status messages include instructions. See YouTube’s stream health metrics and error messages for live streams.

Use the error text to decide what to investigate. YouTube distinguishes critical errors from moderate warnings and identifies issues such as video or audio format, bitrate, stream settings, keyframe frequency, resolution, and mismatched primary and backup streams. Change the setting the error identifies rather than cycling through unrelated options.

If there is no preview, YouTube is not showing an incoming stream there. If a preview appears but the status is not live, use the displayed health message and the scheduled-stream workflow to determine the next step.
2. Confirm the stream, server URL, and key
Make sure OBS is sending to the intended YouTube stream, not an old scheduled event or another stream. In YouTube’s encoder workflow, the server URL and stream key are the connection details OBS needs. Compare them with the stream selected in Live Control Room; do not publish or share the key.

In YouTube Studio, open the intended stream and locate its encoder settings.

In OBS, check the service and server information under Settings > Stream. Confirm the selected YouTube service and the server URL/key match the intended stream.

For a scheduled stream, YouTube’s workflow is to start the encoder, wait for the preview, then select Go live in Live Control Room. Starting OBS alone may not complete the YouTube-side step.

If YouTube reports a third-party encoder start error, its troubleshooting guidance advises obtaining a new stream key and updating the encoder. Regenerate a key only when the error or a suspected exposed/invalid key warrants it; it is not a general fix for every offline status.

3. Match the error to the encoder configuration
YouTube evaluates the signal it receives. If its error identifies a format or stream-setting problem, check the corresponding OBS output rather than assuming the reconnect itself means the settings are valid. Review resolution, video and audio format, bitrate, keyframe frequency, and audio/video stream settings against YouTube’s current encoder guidance for the chosen resolution. YouTube’s error reference also discusses an audio stream bitrate of 128 Kbps in particular error contexts; that value is not a universal diagnosis or a rule for every offline stream.

If YouTube identifies a primary/backup stream mismatch, verify that both feeds are configured as intended. Avoid changing several settings at once: apply the specific correction, reconnect, and check Live Control Room again.
4. Read OBS’s connection and log evidence
OBS’s reconnect indicator is not proof that YouTube has accepted the stream. Check OBS’s dropped-frame counter and log for the actual event. OBS distinguishes connection failures, invalid path or URL, inaccessible stream keys, disconnections, and encoding errors; those point to different causes.

Dropped frames: OBS defines these as an unstable connection to the remote server or an inability to sustain the selected bitrate. They point toward the connection or bitrate, not automatically a defective OBS installation.

Connection or path/key errors: Recheck the server URL, stream selection, and key.

Encoding errors: Investigate OBS’s encoder status and system load, then compare YouTube’s preview and error text. Do not treat an encoder warning as a network diagnosis.
Use the OBS log to identify what occurred around the disconnect and reconnect. The relevant official guidance is OBS Project’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting and its troubleshooting documentation.

When OBS reports dropped frames or YouTube points to outbound connectivity, test whether the connection can sustain the configured bitrate continuously—not just whether a speed test produces a high peak. OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting page, dated 2024-09-30, gives 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for bitrate. It is a starting recommendation, not a guarantee: stable upload capacity and the streaming service’s limits still matter.

If you are on Wi-Fi, test with wired Ethernet if practical. OBS recommends a wired connection for streaming because Wi-Fi may be unstable.

Temporarily rule out VPNs, security software, network-optimization tools, and outdated network drivers as possible interference. Change one factor at a time and restore protections after testing.

If the encoder output looks and sounds healthy but YouTube’s troubleshooting points to outbound internet, test outbound connectivity and contact your ISP if the problem persists.

6. Escalate hardware checks only when evidence points there
Modem/router connectivity, network cards, cables, and other devices can fail, but replacing equipment is not the first step for a stream that stays offline. Check existing cables and ports if there is evidence of a physical connection issue. OBS recommends speaking with your ISP if you are unsure before replacing hardware; it suggests replacement as a way to confirm a suspected hardware fault, not as a default remedy.

The symptom alone does not establish a single cause. YouTube’s health message, preview, OBS log and dropped-frame data, encoder configuration, and network conditions together narrow the diagnosis.
