YouTube recommends RTMPS for delivery. Before going live, verify your music rights and plan for YouTube’s 12-hour archive limitation: a continuous stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured in full.
Recommended OBS settings for YouTube Live
Use these as a starting point, not a promise that any particular computer or internet connection can sustain a nonstop broadcast. YouTube advises testing the upload rate and monitoring stream health, while OBS generally recommends keeping defaults unless there is a reason to change them.
Video bitrate by codec, resolution, and frame rate
YouTube’s recommended video bitrates vary by codec and output mode. Choose a rate your upload connection can sustain reliably; the values below are YouTube’s recommendations, not universal minimums or a measurement of your connection.
| Output | H.264 | AV1 or H.265 (HEVC) |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
YouTube’s encoder guidance also lists minimum bitrates. Do not confuse those minimums with the recommendations shown above; consult YouTube’s live encoder settings for its current table. There is no established universal winner among H.264, AV1, and H.265: select a codec supported by your OBS encoder and YouTube ingestion path, then weigh the recommended bitrate against your sustained upload capacity.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Rate control, keyframes, and audio
- Rate control: CBR (constant bitrate).
- Keyframe interval: 2 seconds; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Frame rate: YouTube’s general encoder parameters allow up to 60 fps.
- Video codecs: H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 are listed in YouTube’s general guidance.
- Audio: AAC or MP3; YouTube lists 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz for stereo audio. Use options supported by your OBS encoder and the YouTube ingestion path.
- Ingest: YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP.
OBS’s overview advises choosing stream video and audio bitrates to fit the service and available upload speed, and testing before the first stream. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple formats for viewers, but that does not remove the need to send a stable feed at your chosen output settings.
Set up OBS and connect it to YouTube Studio
- Enable live streaming in YouTube. In YouTube Studio, create or select a live stream. Initial enablement may take up to 24 hours, so do this before the planned broadcast.
- Copy the ingest details. Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. Treat the stream key as private: anyone who has it may be able to send video to your channel.
- Enter the details in OBS. Open Settings → Stream, choose YouTube/YouTube RTMPS if available, and enter or connect the stream key and server details as appropriate for the selected service configuration. Use the RTMPS URL supplied by YouTube rather than guessing a server address.
- Set output and video options. In Settings → Output, set rate control to CBR, choose a bitrate supported by your output mode and stable upload, and set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. In Settings → Video, select the intended resolution and frame rate, within YouTube’s listed maximum of 60 fps.
- Configure and check audio. Select a supported AAC or MP3 configuration; for stereo, YouTube lists 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz. Confirm OBS’s audio meters move when the ambient track plays, and avoid sending unintended desktop audio.
- Test before the long run. Start a private or unlisted test if appropriate for your workflow. Check YouTube Studio’s stream health and listen to playback. Test that your playlist or media source advances as expected, and verify the internet connection can sustain the selected bitrate.
- Start the broadcast. Start streaming in OBS and confirm the live preview and stream health in YouTube Studio before leaving the setup unattended.
YouTube describes both computer software encoders and standalone hardware encoders as options. OBS is a software-encoder approach that requires a computer to keep running; the cited OBS and YouTube guidance does not establish minimum computer specifications, endorse a particular model, or guarantee 24/7 uptime.

Plan for archives and DVR on a stream longer than a day
A continuous 24-hour broadcast exceeds YouTube’s 12-hour archive threshold. YouTube says a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, and recommends recording a local archive as a backup. YouTube also says DVR capability may be limited or unavailable on very long streams, including those over 12 hours.
- If a complete replay matters, do not rely on the YouTube archive to preserve the entire uninterrupted broadcast.
- Record a local copy if you need a backup, and confirm you have enough storage and a recording workflow that can run alongside OBS.
- If viewers need rewind, account for the possibility that DVR will not cover the whole long-running stream.
See YouTube’s guidance on live stream archives and DVR on live streams for the applicable limitations.

Clear music rights before going live
YouTube scans live streams for third-party material. If it detects such content, it may replace the stream with a placeholder, warn the creator, and interrupt or terminate the broadcast if the material remains. A license by itself may not prevent interruption: YouTube says licensed third-party content can still be interrupted if the rights holder has not allowlisted the channel through Content ID.
YouTube’s Livestream terms and conditions state: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.”

- Confirm the specific music license covers live broadcast use, the territories you intend to reach, and any archive or replay.
- Ask the rights holder whether Content ID allowlisting is required for your channel and have it completed before the stream.
- Do not assume that “royalty-free” means cleared for every territory, platform use, or archived broadcast; check the actual license terms.
Troubleshooting a 24/7 OBS broadcast
| Symptom | Likely issue | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube reports poor or unstable stream health | The connection may not sustain the selected bitrate, or the encoder settings may not match the intended output. | Test sustained upload, lower the bitrate or output mode to a level the connection can maintain, confirm CBR and the supported codec, then monitor stream health again. |
| OBS connects but YouTube does not receive the stream | The stream URL, key, or selected ingest configuration may be incorrect; live streaming may not yet be enabled. | Re-copy the server URL and key from YouTube Studio, verify the selected RTMPS configuration, and allow for initial enablement, which may take up to 24 hours. |
| The broadcast is interrupted after music is detected | Third-party material may have triggered YouTube’s live scanning, or the channel may not be allowlisted through Content ID. | Stop or replace the disputed material, verify the license covers the use, and coordinate any required allowlisting with the rights holder. |
| The replay is missing or incomplete | The uninterrupted stream exceeded YouTube’s 12-hour archive threshold. | Use a local recording for a complete backup; do not assume YouTube will capture a stream longer than 12 hours. |
| Viewers cannot rewind far enough | DVR may be limited or unavailable for a very long broadcast. | Plan for the DVR limitation and provide a separate recording if viewers need access to earlier content. |
