1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBoth OBS Studio and XSplit Broadcaster can loop pre-recorded videos into a YouTube Live stream. OBS has a built-in Media Source for looping one file and a VLC-based source for playlists. XSplit offers video-file sources and a Video Playlist with continuous playback and looping effects. YouTube supports both as encoders; the feature documentation does not establish that one is more reliable or easier for every setup.
Which one fits your playback workflow?
| Need | OBS Studio | XSplit Broadcaster |
|---|---|---|
| Loop one video | Add a Media Source, choose a local file, and enable Loop. OBS says this restarts the file when playback completes. OBS Media Sources | Add a Video File source. XSplit documents video and audio source controls; its documented looping effects are for Video Playlist. XSplit media sources XSplit Video Playlist |
| Play multiple files | Use the VLC Video source to build a playlist. Loop Playlist is enabled by default. VLC must be installed, and its 32- or 64-bit version must match OBS. OBS Media Sources | Choose Add Source > Scene Widgets > Video Playlist, then add files. XSplit describes continuous playback and looping effects for this source. XSplit Video Playlist |
| YouTube Live output | YouTube lists OBS among encoder options. YouTube encoder setup | XSplit documents YouTube Live as a supported streaming site, and YouTube lists XSplit among encoder options. XSplit supported streaming sites YouTube encoder setup |
Choose based on the source you need and the controls you prefer: OBS has an explicit built-in single-file Loop setting, while its playlist route depends on VLC; XSplit provides a separate Video Playlist source. Neither set of feature pages supplies a controlled reliability or ease-of-use comparison. Test your own files, audio, and transitions before scheduling a long broadcast.
How to loop a video in OBS and stream it to YouTube
Before opening the encoder
- Your channel must be eligible for live streaming, verified, and without a live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it ahead of your planned stream. Check the current channel status in YouTube Studio. YouTube live-stream eligibility YouTube encoder setup
- For one file, have the video available locally. For a playlist, install VLC and match its bitness to OBS: 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. OBS Media Sources
- Confirm you have rights to both the video and its audio. YouTube applies its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service to live content; active copyright strikes and matches to another copyrighted live broadcast can be grounds for live-stream restrictions. The cited policy does not say that looping prerecorded video is categorically disallowed. YouTube live-stream restrictions
Loop a single file
- In OBS, add a Media Source to the scene and select the local video file. OBS Media Sources
- Enable Loop in that source’s properties. OBS documents this setting as restarting the file after playback completes.
- Play the source and check the picture and audio. Watch the end-to-start transition as well as the opening: a hard cut, silence, or abrupt audio jump may be part of the file itself.
Play a playlist in OBS
- Install VLC. If OBS is 64-bit, use 64-bit VLC; mismatched versions can prevent the VLC source from working. OBS Media Sources
- Add the VLC Video source and add the local files to its playlist.
- Check the playlist’s order and looping behavior. OBS documents Loop Playlist as on by default; confirm the setting and test the transition between files.
Connect OBS to the YouTube live event
- In YouTube Studio, create or open the intended live stream and select the encoder workflow. Follow YouTube’s current setup steps for that event. YouTube encoder setup
- Copy the event’s stream key into OBS’s streaming configuration. A stream key is a credential that tells the encoder where to send the feed and lets YouTube accept it. Keep it private; reset it if it is exposed. YouTube live stream settings
- Start the encoder feed and inspect the YouTube preview before going live. Set up ahead of time, check the preview, and monitor audio and video during the broadcast. YouTube live streaming tips YouTube streaming tips
- Rehearse using the same file, playlist, and visibility setting you plan to use. Confirm that the stream is accessible and that video and audio remain correct at each loop boundary.
How to loop videos in XSplit and stream to YouTube
Set up the video source
- For a single file, add a Video File source and choose the local video. XSplit’s documentation describes playback controls for video and audio sources. XSplit media sources
- For multiple files, choose Add Source > Scene Widgets > Video Playlist, then add the files. XSplit describes continuous playback and looping effects for the playlist source. XSplit Video Playlist
- Check playback order, audio, and the transitions between files. Do not assume that a control documented for Video Playlist is available in the same way on a standalone Video File source.
Send the feed to YouTube
- Set up a YouTube live event and configure XSplit as the encoder, following the event’s current YouTube setup steps. XSplit lists YouTube Live as a supported destination. XSplit supported streaming sites YouTube encoder setup
- Enter the event’s stream key in the encoder configuration and protect it like a password. Reset it if it is compromised. YouTube live stream settings
- Start the feed, inspect YouTube’s preview, and rehearse the complete loop before the public broadcast. Monitor picture and audio while live. YouTube live streaming tips
What settings and checks matter before a long stream?
Use YouTube’s current encoder setup guidance for the event rather than relying on a fixed bitrate, resolution, or keyframe number copied from an older guide. The documentation cited here confirms encoder support and preview/monitoring practices but does not establish a single set of numerical settings for every stream. Your chosen output must be supported by your encoder, connection, and source; verify the current recommendations in YouTube Studio and watch the preview for problems before going live. YouTube encoder setup YouTube live streaming tips
- Playback: verify that the file plays through its full duration and that loop and playlist settings are enabled as intended.
- Sound: listen at the beginning, between playlist items, and at the loop boundary. Confirm that expected audio is present in YouTube’s preview.
- Stream key: use the key for the intended event, keep it private, and reset it if exposed. YouTube live stream settings
- Rights and policy: use video and audio you are authorized to broadcast, and check the channel for live-stream restrictions before scheduling. YouTube live-stream restrictions
- Unattended operation: with OBS or XSplit running locally, the computer and network connection are part of the stream path. A sleep, shutdown, application failure, or connection loss can interrupt a do-it-yourself broadcast; test the actual machine and setup if leaving it unattended.
Troubleshooting: common loop and live-stream problems
| Symptom | Likely check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| OBS single video stops at the end | The Media Source’s Loop setting may be off. | Open the source properties, enable Loop, and replay through the end boundary. OBS Media Sources |
| OBS playlist source is unavailable or will not play | VLC may not be installed or may not match OBS’s bitness. | Install the VLC version matching OBS (64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC), then reopen or re-add the VLC Video source. OBS Media Sources |
| Playlist does not repeat as expected | Playlist looping may be disabled, or the selected source may not be the playlist source. | Check Loop Playlist in OBS’s VLC source, or confirm you are using XSplit’s Video Playlist and review its playback controls. OBS Media Sources XSplit Video Playlist |
| YouTube does not receive the encoder feed | The event setup, stream key, or encoder connection may be wrong. | Recheck the active YouTube event and its key in the encoder setup. Treat the key as sensitive and reset it if compromised. YouTube encoder setup YouTube live stream settings |
| Feed arrives but has a picture or sound problem | The source playback or encoder output may differ from what you expected. | Check the local source, then compare it with YouTube’s preview; monitor audio and video continuously during the stream. YouTube live streaming tips YouTube streaming tips |
| Stream cannot be started on the channel | Live streaming may not be enabled, or the channel may have a restriction. | Check eligibility and activation in YouTube Studio. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours. YouTube live-stream eligibility |
Can OBS or XSplit keep a 24/7 stream running?
Either can provide the local prerecorded-video feed described above, but that setup relies on the computer, encoder, and network connection staying available. The feature documentation does not establish which application is more reliable in a 24/7 comparison. Rehearse a full playback cycle, check the loop boundary, and monitor the YouTube preview and live output rather than assuming an unattended setup will recover from every interruption.
