A practical OBS guide to choosing a camera, still image, or looping media source and setting canvas, output resolution, and frame rate for a continuous Marathi devotional stream.

Choose the OBS source to match what you are broadcasting: Video Capture Device for a live camera or capture card, Image Source for still artwork, Media Source for one prerecorded video, or VLC Video for a playlist. There is no universal resolution or frame-rate preset for Marathi devotional programming; the right settings depend on the source, computer, network, and streaming destination.

Choose the right video source

In OBS, first decide whether the visual is live, static, or prerecorded. A source type describes where the picture comes from; it does not set a special devotional-stream format.

  • Live camera or capture card: add a Video Capture Device source on supported platforms and select the intended device. On Linux, OBS documents V4L2 instead; Blackmagic devices use a separate source.
  • Still image or graphic: add an Image Source, then size, position, or crop it in the scene.
  • One prerecorded file: add a Media Source and enable Loop if it should repeat.
  • Playlist: add VLC Video and configure the playlist. OBS documents Loop Playlist as on by default; VLC must be installed for this source to be available.

See OBS’s guides for video capture devices, sources, and media sources. Property names and available controls can vary by operating system, drivers, and device.

Set up a live camera or capture card

  1. Add the source: in the scene’s Sources area, choose + → Video Capture Device, create or select a source, and choose the intended camera or capture device.
  2. Choose a supported mode: select a resolution and frame rate the device actually supports. OBS warns that an unsupported mode may leave the source blank. If the device exposes custom resolution/FPS, video format, color space/range, buffering, or audio properties, use the controls available on that installation and check the device documentation rather than assuming the same fields exist everywhere.
  3. Fit the picture: position, scale, or crop the source to suit the scene. Confirm that important text, deity imagery, and other visual details are not cut off.
  4. Consider scene switching: on Windows, the documented Deactivate when not showing option frees resources while a source is hidden, but can introduce a short delay when it reappears. It is off by default in OBS’s Windows properties table. Test the behavior if you switch scenes during the broadcast.

If a Linux setup does not offer the generic Video Capture Device source, use the V4L2 source where appropriate. Do not assume Windows-specific property instructions apply to V4L2 or a Blackmagic source. OBS’s device guide describes these platform distinctions.

Set up still artwork or looping media

Still artwork

Add an Image Source and arrange it in the scene. Use OBS’s transform and crop controls to fit the canvas. This is the simplest source choice when the picture should remain static while audio plays.

One video file

Add a Media Source, select the local file, and enable Loop if it should repeat continuously. Preview the transition at the end of the file to confirm the result is suitable; playback and visibility behavior can be affected by scene changes.

Playlist

Use VLC Video for a playlist, with VLC installed. OBS documents Loop Playlist as enabled by default, but verify the setting and test the order and repeat behavior before broadcasting. OBS’s Media Sources guide explains the available sources and playback controls.

Choose canvas, output resolution, and frame rate

Open Settings → Video. Base (Canvas) Resolution is the space in which you arrange the scene; Output (Scaled) Resolution is the size sent to the stream. The OBS overview gives 720p and 480p as examples of output resolutions, not as requirements for this program. Choose an output your computer and destination service can handle, and check the destination’s accepted formats separately.

Set Common FPS Values to the intended output rate. OBS’s overview advises that it should match the desired output FPS, giving 30 and 60 as examples. It also cautions that 60-fps streaming can be much more taxing on a system than 30 fps. For mostly static artwork or slowly changing devotional visuals, 30 fps is a reasonable starting point when conserving resources; that is a practical inference, not an official devotional-stream preset. Motion, device support, hardware, network conditions, and platform requirements may point to a different choice. See OBS’s OBS Studio Overview Guide.

Setting choice What it controls What to check
Base (Canvas) Resolution Scene layout area Arrange and crop sources within this canvas.
Output (Scaled) Resolution Stream output size Confirm the destination accepts it and the computer can sustain it. OBS lists 720p and 480p as examples, not prescriptions.
Common FPS Value Output frame rate Match the intended output rate and consider the source’s supported modes and motion. OBS gives 30/60 as examples and warns 60 fps can be substantially more taxing than 30 fps.

These are general OBS examples and guidance, not measured results for a Marathi devotional stream. The correct combination cannot be established without knowing the source, operating system, computer, network, and streaming destination.

Test the full scene before going live

  1. Preview the intended scene and make sure the selected source is visible, framed correctly, and not unexpectedly hidden.
  2. For a file or playlist, watch enough playback to verify the loop, ordering, and scene visibility behavior.
  3. Check that audio comes from the intended device or source; OBS’s quick-start guidance suggests checking that audio meters move.
  4. Run a short test for a few minutes before the real broadcast. OBS recommends testing rather than immediately relying on a first setup. A short check can expose configuration mistakes, but it does not prove long-duration reliability.
  5. If continuity matters, prepare a tested fallback scene or input for source interruption. This is an operational precaution, not a guarantee that the camera, computer, connection, or destination will remain available.

OBS’s Quick Start Guide recommends a brief test before a first stream or recording.

Troubleshoot common source problems

  • Camera or capture card shows no picture: check that the correct device is selected and that the chosen resolution and frame rate are supported. Review driver and device controls available on that platform.
  • Source disappears after changing scenes: inspect source visibility and any deactivate-when-hidden behavior. If reactivation delay is a problem, test an alternative setting before the broadcast.
  • Video stops instead of repeating: for a single file, enable Loop in Media Source; for a playlist, inspect Loop Playlist in VLC Video and verify VLC is installed.
  • Picture is cropped or poorly placed: adjust the source transform and crop within the scene, then preview the complete frame.
  • Stream struggles at the selected frame rate: lower the output FPS or resolution and test again. OBS specifically warns that 60 fps can be much more taxing than 30 fps; the sustainable setting depends on the actual system and destination.
  • Audio appears absent: confirm the intended audio source and watch OBS’s meters during a test. A visible video source does not by itself confirm audio routing.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is a continuous YouTube stream of uploaded devotional recordings or a playlist, StreamNeo runs the playback in the cloud: upload the video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay powered on at home. Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. It streams uploaded video to YouTube, not from a live camera. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. For Indian users, UPI is available.
