Yes. OBS’s VLC Video source can display subtitles from a video’s subtitle track: add the source, enable Subtitles Enabled, and select the track you want. OBS documents subtitles as off by default and track 1 as the default. The subtitles are rendered into the video OBS sends; they are not YouTube captions viewers can toggle.
Enable subtitles in an OBS VLC Video source
- Install VLC and match its architecture to OBS. The VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed. If you use 64-bit OBS, OBS specifically requires 64-bit VLC. If the VLC source is missing, check this before troubleshooting the media file. OBS Media Sources
- Add the source. In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene that will carry the stream. Add the video files or playlist you intend to play.
- Turn on subtitles. In the source properties, enable Subtitles Enabled. The documented default is off.
- Choose the subtitle track. Set Subtitle Track to the track containing the intended language or content. The documented default is track 1, but OBS does not provide a universal mapping from track numbers to languages or formats for every file and container. Inspect the actual file rather than assuming track 1 is correct. OBS Media Sources
- Check the rendered result in the OBS preview. Test each actual file for correct language, visibility, and timing. Confirm the subtitles remain legible in the composed scene and do not sit under other overlays. Know which kind of subtitles you are sending
VLC-source subtitles are part of the picture
When the VLC source renders a selected subtitle track, OBS includes the visible text in the outgoing video composition. Viewers see it as part of the picture; they cannot turn that rendered text off using YouTube’s caption controls.
YouTube closed captions are a separate workflow
For captions viewers can select on YouTube, caption data must be sent to YouTube separately. YouTube states: “To add captions to your live stream, you need to send captions to YouTube.” Its documented embedded-caption route requires captions to be enabled in stream setup, Embedded 608/708 selected, and the encoder configured to provide EIA 608/CEA 708 captions. YouTube’s documentation says one caption track is supported at present. Check the current Live Control Room options before relying on this route. YouTube Help: Live caption requirements
YouTube’s live-caption documentation names StreamText.Net among supported caption software. Treat it as a service to investigate if you need viewer-selectable live captions; the documentation does not establish current partner terms.

Fixed overlay text is not synchronized captioning
If you only need a title or other fixed text, an OBS Text source can display text entered directly or read from a file. File-backed text does not automatically synchronize to dialogue, and it does not create YouTube captions. Arrange the source stack so another source does not cover the text. Check looping and visibility for continuous playback
The VLC Video source’s Loop Playlist setting is on by default, allowing playback to restart after the media list ends. Its Visibility Behaviour defaults to “Stop when not visible, restart when visible.” Verify both settings for your scene and test what happens when the playlist reaches its end. Looping governs source playback; it is not a guarantee that OBS, your computer, or the YouTube stream will stay online continuously. OBS Media Sources

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That published boundary is worth factoring into stream and archive planning, but it does not establish how every account or a particular ongoing 24/7 event will behave. Troubleshoot missing or incorrect subtitles
- The VLC Video source does not appear: Install VLC, then confirm that its architecture matches OBS. OBS requires 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS. OBS Media Sources
- No subtitles appear: Check that Subtitles Enabled is on and that Subtitle Track points to a track containing subtitles. The default is off, and track 1 is only a default—not proof that the file’s first track is the desired one.
- The wrong language or subtitle content appears: Try the track that actually contains the desired language or content, then confirm it in preview. OBS’s documentation does not define a universal track-number map for every file.
- Subtitles are mistimed or inconsistent between files: Test the actual files and playlist transitions before going live. The cited OBS documentation does not establish universal compatibility or per-file behavior for every subtitle format.
- Text disappears when changing scenes or is covered: Check the source’s visibility behavior and the order of sources in the scene. A higher source can cover sources below it; a VLC source set to stop when hidden may also stop during invisibility. OBS Media Sources OBS Sources Guide
- Viewers cannot toggle the subtitles: VLC-source subtitles are part of the video image. Use a separate caption-delivery workflow if viewer-selectable YouTube captions are required. YouTube Help: Live caption requirements
