OBS vs. Cloud Playout for a 24/7 YouTube Music Stream

OBS offers direct production control but needs a capable computer and connection left running. Cloud playout shifts continuous playback to a provider, with service and plan limits to check.

Choose OBS if you want hands-on control of scenes, audio, and encoding and can keep a capable computer and internet connection running. Choose cloud playout if you want uploaded music videos to play continuously without leaving a computer on at home. Neither approach guarantees uninterrupted streaming, YouTube eligibility, an audience, or rights to the music. This is a workflow choice, not a universal quality or reliability ranking.

How OBS and cloud playout differ

Decision OBS on a computer you manage Cloud playout
Where playback runs On your computer. OBS sends the stream directly to YouTube or another destination; OBS says it does not operate streaming servers. OBS Help On the provider’s infrastructure, according to the provider. Your home computer does not have to run the playout.
Production control Scenes, sources, and audio mixing are configurable in OBS. OBS features Playlist and scheduling controls are typical of the documented playout workflow; other live-studio controls depend on the service and plan. playout.video
Ongoing work You maintain the machine, OBS configuration, internet connection, monitoring, and recovery when something stops. Less local machine operation, but you depend on the provider, your account, the service’s content handling, and its plan limits.
Cost shape OBS is free and open source; hardware, electricity, internet, and any remote-computing costs are separate. OBS features Plans may cost money. Check current duration, quality, storage, and destination limits directly with the provider.
Better fit when… You want direct control over a live production and can operate the streaming computer. You value hosted, continuous playout, playlists, and scheduling more than direct control over local production.

These differences describe how the workflows are designed; they are not measured evidence that one has better uptime, stream continuity, or audience growth.

When OBS makes sense

OBS is a good fit for a creator who wants to mix sources, adjust audio, and manage scenes directly. It also avoids a cloud-playout subscription, though it does not eliminate the costs of a computer, electricity, or internet service.

A machine that meets OBS’s basic requirements is not automatically suitable for your specific workload. CPU and graphics demands vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. OBS cautions: “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” See the OBS system requirements, use the Auto-Configuration Wizard, and test the actual output settings and scenes you plan to run.

Set up a continuous stream with OBS

  1. Check YouTube eligibility. YouTube says a channel must be verified and must have had no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days to enable live streaming. Review YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and setup instructions before building the workflow.
  2. Create or select the stream in YouTube Studio. Get the server URL and stream key shown for the stream. In OBS, enter them in the streaming settings for the YouTube connection. Follow the current YouTube encoder instructions for the Studio interface and connection details.
  3. Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: anyone with access may be able to send a stream to your channel. Do not publish it or include it in a recording or screenshot.
  4. Build and test the playback setup. Add the music and visual sources you intend to use, configure the scene and audio mix, and run a test at your target resolution, frame rate, encoder, and scene complexity. Use the OBS Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point, not a substitute for a real workload test.
  5. Keep the full local chain running. For continuous playback, the computer, OBS, and network connection must remain available. Monitor the stream and have a recovery plan for power, application, or internet interruptions.

OBS’s guidance does not prescribe a universal bitrate, resolution, frame rate, or keyframe interval: suitable encoder settings depend on the output and available connection. Avoid copying arbitrary numbers from another setup. Test the target configuration and confirm it is sustainable on your machine and network.

When cloud playout makes sense

Cloud playout is worth considering when you want uploaded files to play as a continuous channel without keeping your own computer responsible for playback. A provider’s feature set and limits vary, so verify the current plan details before committing.

For example, playout.video describes cloud channels for looped channels and music streams, with playlist ordering and scheduling. Its product page states that its free offering is limited to two hours per stream session and that 24/7 playout is a paid-plan feature; those are provider-stated terms, not an independent performance assessment. Check playout.video’s current offering before relying on a particular limit or feature.

Example: playout.video’s documented workflow

  1. Create an account and add at least one video file.
  2. Connect a platform account, then build a playlist and set its order.
  3. Launch playback from the dashboard and check the live output on YouTube.

The provider’s February 22, 2026 guide describes this workflow and lists MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, and WebM as supported file formats. Formats and features are provider-documented, not independently tested here.

YouTube rules and archive limits apply to either route

Regardless of whether OBS or a cloud service sends the signal, YouTube’s rules govern the channel and the live content. YouTube Help states: “All content in live streams must adhere to our Community Guidelines and Terms of Service.” Read the applicable YouTube live-streaming requirements.

Make sure you have the necessary rights for the specific music and visual material you stream. Owning a file or having access to a track does not by itself establish permission to broadcast it; the cited YouTube guidance does not grant rights to any particular catalog.

Troubleshooting the common failure points

  • You cannot start a live stream: check that the channel is verified and has no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days; confirm that the stream is set up in YouTube Studio.
  • OBS reports dropped frames: OBS says this can indicate an unstable connection to the destination or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. Check network stability and lower the bitrate if the connection cannot maintain it. OBS Help
  • The stream struggles under load: reduce workload or adjust output settings, then test again. Resolution, frame rate, encoder, and scene complexity all affect the demand; compatible hardware alone does not establish that the full workload will perform.
  • Playback stops when the local setup is unattended: with OBS, inspect the computer’s power, application, and network availability. With cloud playout, check the provider dashboard, account, file, playlist, and plan limits; a hosted workflow still depends on the service.
  • The archive is incomplete or missing for a long stream: YouTube’s automatic-archive statement applies to streams under 12 hours; it does not promise one complete VOD beyond that threshold.
  • A music stream is blocked or restricted: review the applicable YouTube policy notice and confirm rights for the particular audio and visuals. Changing encoder or playout provider does not grant those rights.

Or let it run in the cloud

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use OBS to loop a music stream continuously?

Yes, if you configure playback in OBS and keep the computer, OBS, and network running; the computer sends the stream directly to YouTube.

Does a cloud playout service guarantee that YouTube will keep a stream live?

No such guarantee is established here. Cloud playout removes local playback from the workflow, but the service and YouTube connection can still be interrupted.
