OBS vs FFmpeg for a 24/7 Bhajan Channel on YouTube

OBS is the approachable choice for looping prerecorded bhajans with a fixed visual; FFmpeg suits operators comfortable managing a command-line pipeline. Learn the YouTube settings and limits to plan for.

For most solo creators looping prerecorded bhajans with one steady visual, OBS is the more approachable starting point: its scene-and-source interface supports local media loops and playlists. FFmpeg is a reasonable choice if you already know how to configure, launch, log, and supervise a command-line media pipeline. The available evidence does not establish that either option is more reliable for nonstop broadcasting.

OBS or FFmpeg: which fits your channel?

What matters OBS FFmpeg
Workflow Visual scene-and-source interface; configure a service or custom server and stream key in settings. OBS overview Command-line workflow. Choose it if you are comfortable assembling and supervising a media pipeline; this is workflow guidance, not a benchmark.
Looping prerecorded media Media Source can loop a local file. A VLC Video Source can loop a playlist and requires VLC installed. OBS media sources No verified command or loop flags are established here; confirm commands against documentation for your operating system and FFmpeg build.
Scenes and overlays Scenes and sources are designed to compose a stream layout, useful if you want titles, changing visuals, camera, or microphone sources. OBS overview Better suited to operators who prefer to configure a pipeline rather than arrange production in a visual interface.
Recovery and nonstop operation OBS documents automatic reconnect settings, but does not promise uptime. Test the host, connection, media, and recovery behavior. OBS overview No comparative reliability evidence is established. Plan how you will detect and recover a stalled process or dropped connection.

If your broadcast is simply a devotional image or video with a bhajan playlist, OBS makes the setup visible and relatively easy to inspect. If you need a scripted, repeatable pipeline and can monitor it, FFmpeg may suit your workflow. Neither choice removes the need for a stable host, reliable upload, rights-cleared media, and a plan for interruptions.

Set up a continuous bhajan stream with OBS

  1. Check YouTube eligibility. Your channel must be verified and must not have a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. First-time activation of live streaming may take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance and encoder setup instructions.
  2. Prepare your media and layout. In OBS, create a scene, then add a Media Source for a local file and enable looping. For a playlist, add a VLC Video Source, install VLC first, and enable playlist looping. Add a devotional visual as another source if needed. Check that audio is audible and transitions between items work. OBS documents these source options in its media sources guide.
  3. Connect OBS to YouTube. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or schedule the stream and copy its server URL and stream key. In OBS stream settings, choose the relevant service or enter a custom server, then supply the URL and key. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it or share it with anyone who should not control the stream. YouTube’s encoder guide describes the connection process.
  4. Set encoder output for your actual connection. YouTube recommends RTMPS, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum of four seconds. It supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video at up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS. For H.264 at 720p30, its recommended video bitrate is 8 Mbps; use the bitrate range for your selected codec, resolution, and frame rate in YouTube’s encoder settings table. These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that your internet connection can sustain them.
  5. Test before committing to a long session. Use representative audio and motion, then check Live Control Room’s stream health. YouTube specifically recommends tests with audio and movement similar to the intended stream. Confirm that the media loops cleanly, audio does not clip or disappear, and OBS reconnect behavior works as expected. The OBS overview documents automatic reconnect settings, not a 24/7 availability guarantee.
  6. Go live and supervise. Start the stream in OBS and confirm its status in Live Control Room. Keep a way to notice a stalled OBS process, a dropped network, or YouTube health warnings; automatic reconnect alone is not a substitute for monitoring.

Use FFmpeg only if you can operate the pipeline

FFmpeg can be the better fit for a creator who already knows how to build and supervise command-line media workflows. For a continuous bhajan broadcast, you need to determine how your particular build handles the input or playlist, looping, audio/video encoding, RTMPS output, process logging, and restart after failure. The available evidence does not establish a verified command line, exact flags, CPU use, or a reliability advantage, so this is not a safe place to paste an unverified one-liner. Check the official documentation for your installed FFmpeg version and test the complete setup on your operating system before relying on it.

Whichever encoder you choose, YouTube’s server URL and stream key come from Live Control Room. Apply the platform’s current encoder recommendations for RTMPS, CBR, keyframes, codec, and bitrate, and monitor stream health; see YouTube’s encoder guide and settings guidance.

Plan for archives, rights, and YouTube rules

Archives are not assured for a 24-hour session

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a continuous 24-hour broadcast will produce one complete, reliable replay under that rule. If saved replays matter, plan sessions and archiving around YouTube’s published limit, and verify the resulting archive in Studio. YouTube’s encoder guide

Clear each part of the bhajan content

Before streaming, confirm that you have the rights needed for the specific sound recording, performance, arrangement, artwork, and any video. A devotional or traditional song is not automatic permission to use a particular recording or performance. YouTube’s general rules require live content to comply with its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service, but they do not clear a particular asset. YouTube live-streaming guidance

Troubleshoot the common failure points

  • YouTube will not let you start streaming: check channel verification, restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and whether first-time activation is still processing; YouTube says activation may take up to 24 hours. Eligibility guidance
  • OBS cannot connect: verify you copied the current server URL and stream key from the correct Live Control Room stream, and that the selected service or custom server fields match. If the key may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube and update OBS. Encoder setup
  • Stream health warns of instability: check the real upload connection and reduce output demands if necessary; select a bitrate from YouTube’s range for the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate. Test under conditions resembling the intended broadcast. Encoder settings
  • The bhajan stops or the playlist ends: confirm looping is enabled on the OBS Media Source or VLC playlist source, and verify VLC is installed if using that source. Test the transition through the end of the media. OBS media sources
  • The live feed drops and does not return: inspect OBS reconnect settings and the underlying host and network. Reconnect can help with a temporary interruption, but neither OBS documentation nor the available comparison evidence promises uninterrupted service.
  • No complete replay appears: check session duration; YouTube’s automatic archive rule applies to streams under 12 hours, so a 24-hour session should not be treated as a guaranteed complete archive. YouTube encoder guide
