Neither encoder guarantees an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast. OBS or FFmpeg: which fits your operating model?
YouTube supports encoder-based live streaming. Its encoder guide describes an encoder as software or standalone hardware and directs you to put YouTube’s server URL and stream key into the encoder. OBS is open-source software listed in that guide; FFmpeg is a command-line media framework. These are different operating workflows, not a proven reliability ranking. YouTube’s encoder setup guide

There is no supported universal winner for CPU use, output quality, uptime or recovery. Those depend on the source media, encoding configuration, machine, network and how the process is monitored; the cited documentation does not provide a comparable benchmark.
Can OBS stream 24/7?
OBS can be used as an encoder for a long-running stream, but a 24/7 operation is more than leaving its window open. The source must continue playing, the computer and network must stay available, the output must remain connected, and someone or something must detect and respond to failures. OBS documents reconnect settings for outputs that support them. Its reference says retry waits double on successive attempts to avoid overloading services, and a retry count of zero disables reconnecting. It also exposes total output frames and frames dropped due to network congestion. Treat these as configurable recovery and diagnostic tools, not an uptime promise. OBS output reference

Plan for source playback behavior, power and network continuity, process monitoring, alerts, and what happens after a restart. A reconnect mechanism addresses only part of the failure path: it does not ensure that the media source resumes correctly or that YouTube’s broadcast lifecycle and archive behave as you intend.
Is FFmpeg better than OBS for a continuous YouTube stream?
Not by default. FFmpeg can suit a deliberately configured command-line pipeline; OBS can suit an operator who wants a graphical production environment. A command is not a complete operations plan: for a continuous broadcast you also need a reliable source loop, a defined restart and alerting arrangement, and a way to inspect output and YouTube status.

FFmpeg behavior can vary with version, input and output protocol, and command options. The available FFmpeg documentation points to current and versioned manuals but does not establish a tested, generally applicable YouTube publishing command or specific retry behavior. Consult the manual for the version and protocol you actually deploy, then validate your configuration before relying on it for a continuous stream. FFmpeg documentation
What to configure and check for either encoder
- Prepare the YouTube broadcast. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the broadcast and obtain its stream key and server URL using the current interface. Keep the key private: it authorizes an encoder to send video to the bound stream. YouTube’s encoder guide explains the setup flow. YouTube encoder setup
- Choose the right production path. In OBS, configure the media source and scenes in the interface, then configure the stream output with YouTube’s server URL and key. With FFmpeg, build a command for your chosen media input, encoding settings and output protocol; do not copy a command without checking it against your installed FFmpeg version and YouTube’s current requirements.
- Test the whole chain before scheduling continuous playback. Confirm that the intended video plays, the encoder sends a signal, the broadcast starts as expected, and the stream remains healthy during a representative run. Check output indicators and YouTube’s live status rather than assuming that a running process means viewers are receiving video.
- Define recovery and monitoring. For OBS, verify the reconnect configuration for the selected output and monitor its output counters. For FFmpeg, determine how the process is supervised, how logs and failures are surfaced, and under what conditions it restarts. Test disconnection and restart scenarios where practical; do not treat a retry setting as a substitute for process-level supervision.
- Set the broadcast audience accurately. YouTube’s live-broadcast API includes
madeForKidsandselfDeclaredMadeForKidsproperties. Select the applicable audience designation based on the actual content and platform requirements; calling a stream a kids’ stream does not itself determine its classification. That condition does not establish that a 24-hour broadcast will automatically produce a complete archive, so arrange any needed recording and retention separately. Kids’ content and YouTube’s rules
YouTube states that all live content must comply with its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. The operator is responsible for choosing the appropriate audience designation for the actual program; neither OBS nor FFmpeg can make that decision correctly on the operator’s behalf. YouTube’s API also describes broadcast controls including auto-start when video begins arriving on a bound stream and auto-stop around one minute after the channel owner stops sending video. These are platform lifecycle behaviors, not differences between OBS and FFmpeg; check the broadcast configuration you use rather than assuming the encoder determines when a broadcast begins or ends. When a cloud service is a better operational fit
If the goal is prerecorded continuous playback and you do not want a home computer and connection to be part of the broadcast chain, a hosted service is a different category from running OBS or FFmpeg yourself. YouTube’s encoder guide lists Gyre as a cloud-based option for 24/7 prerecorded streaming; the guide’s description is not an independent performance test, so evaluate the service’s terms and capabilities directly. Troubleshooting a continuous stream
- YouTube is not receiving video: verify the selected broadcast, server URL and stream key in the encoder, then confirm the media source is playing and the output is active. If the key was exposed, replace it in YouTube and update the encoder.
- The stream disconnects repeatedly: check the computer or host, network connection, and encoder logs or status. In OBS, check whether the chosen output supports reconnect and inspect dropped-frame measurements; reconnect attempts do not prove the underlying connection is stable.
- The process runs but playback stops: investigate the media source and loop or playlist behavior separately from the encoder connection. Process supervision can restart a failed process, but it cannot ensure a source is configured to resume at the right point.
- A 24-hour broadcast has no complete archive: YouTube’s cited automatic-archive condition is for streams under 12 hours. Do not rely on it for a longer broadcast; arrange a separate recording and retention plan.
- The audience designation is wrong or unclear: review the broadcast’s YouTube audience setting against the content and applicable platform requirements. Changing encoders does not resolve the classification.
Cost and operational burden
OBS and FFmpeg are encoder workflows, but the total cost of operating either continuously depends on the host computer or server, power, network availability, storage or recording needs, and the attention required for monitoring and recovery. The cited sources do not quantify those costs or establish a universal cost winner. A hosted service shifts the always-on playback operation to the cloud; compare the service’s exact slot, storage, billing and quality terms against the value of running your own system.
