Choose OBS if you need a visual workspace for scenes, overlays, and source switching. Choose FFmpeg if you want a scripted pipeline that loops or sequences files and publishes directly to YouTube. Neither choice guarantees an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast: reliability depends on the specific media, machine, network, and recovery setup.
OBS vs FFmpeg: which fits your stream?
| Need | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Compose scenes, add overlays, or switch sources by sight | OBS | Its visual interface is designed for hands-on production and exposes output and reconnect controls. |
| Loop or sequence files in a repeatable command-line pipeline | FFmpeg | It can publish media directly to an ingest endpoint, but you must manage the command, process, and failure handling. |
| Operate without a computer or home connection staying on | StreamNeo | It keeps uploaded videos looping to YouTube from the cloud; any quality up to 4K 60fps is included at one flat price per slot, and the first day is free. |
This is a workflow choice, not a universal reliability ranking. The reviewed official documentation does not establish that OBS or FFmpeg has better 24/7 uptime, and neither a reconnect setting nor a long-running process alone guarantees continuity.
What YouTube requires from the encoder
In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the live stream and copy its stream URL and stream key into your encoder. YouTube says first-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours, so enable it and verify access before the planned launch. Starting the encoder sends content to YouTube; stopping it stops the feed. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance explains the flow.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, and AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS ingest. The following are YouTube’s recommended H.264 video bitrates, not guaranteed minimum internet speeds:

| Output | YouTube-recommended H.264 video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p30 | 6 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 12 Mbps |
YouTube publishes separate bitrate guidance for AV1 and H.265; consult its current encoder settings for the selected codec and output. Leave headroom above the video bitrate for audio and network variation, and test the actual connection rather than treating a bitrate recommendation as an upload-speed guarantee.
Set up OBS for pre-recorded video
OBS is the practical option when you want to see and control a scene. The exact playlist and media-source controls can vary by OBS version; the official guidance supports encoder settings and reconnect configuration, but does not establish one universal playlist-loop procedure. Confirm the available controls in your installed version and test the complete sequence before relying on it.

- Prepare the content. Confirm each file plays correctly, includes the intended audio, and has the resolution and frame rate you intend to send. Add the files as media sources or use a playlist workflow supported by your OBS version. Verify whether playback should stop, restart, or move to the next item at the end; do not assume a source will loop or advance as desired.
- Build the scene. Add the prerecorded-video source to a scene. Add overlays or other sources only if needed, then preview transitions and check that no unintended desktop, notification, or blank scene appears between videos.
- Configure the output. In OBS, open Settings > Output and set a bitrate and encoder appropriate to the YouTube guidance above. In Settings > Video, choose the output resolution and frame rate the content and system can sustain. In Settings > Stream, select YouTube and enter the stream key, or use the service connection flow available in your OBS version. Menu labels and options may differ by version.
- Match the ingest settings. Use RTMPS where the selected YouTube connection provides it, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval (never more than four seconds). Choose a supported video and audio codec. OBS exposes output controls, but the presence of a setting does not itself prove the selected configuration is correct.
- Enable reconnect and test. OBS provides automatic reconnect controls. Configure them, then run a private or otherwise appropriate test with representative audio and movement. Check YouTube’s stream health and confirm that the media advances or loops as intended. OBS cautions that 60 fps can demand more system capacity than 30 fps; test the actual computer under load.
- Plan supervision. Keep the computer and network available for the entire broadcast. Reconnect controls address some interruptions; they do not replace monitoring, alerts, or a way to restart a stalled OBS process.
Use FFmpeg for a scripted stream
FFmpeg suits operators comfortable with command-line configuration and process supervision. Its official protocol documentation describes RTMP publishing and RTMPS as RTMP over a secure SSL connection. A typical publishing shape is ffmpeg [input and encoding options] -f flv "rtmps://INGEST_URL/APP/STREAM_KEY". Replace the endpoint with the RTMPS URL and key supplied by YouTube; do not publish a real stream key in a script shared publicly.
- Choose how files are sequenced. Decide whether the input is a single file to repeat or a sequence of files. Build and test the input handling for that exact playlist; FFmpeg command syntax depends on the input and desired transitions, so a generic command should not be treated as a complete playlist implementation.
- Set the output deliberately. Encode or pass through media only when the formats and properties are suitable for the chosen ingest settings. Set CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (maximum four seconds), supported codecs, resolution, frame rate, and a bitrate based on YouTube’s current guidance. The example above is only the publishing shape, not a ready-to-run command.
- Publish securely. Use the YouTube-provided ingest endpoint and stream key. FFmpeg documents RTMPS publishing; verify that the installed build supports the protocol and options used.
- Handle failure outside the command. FFmpeg documents reconnect options for applicable network protocols, but input-side HTTP reconnect options should not be confused with automatic recovery from every RTMP publishing failure. Verify output-protocol behavior for the installed build, and use an external process supervisor and alerting if the stream must be monitored continuously.
- Test the deployment. Run the actual file sequence with representative movement and audio, check YouTube stream health, and test what happens when the process or network is interrupted. A command that starts successfully is not proof that it will recover from every failure.
Continuous operation, recovery, and archives
For either self-hosted method, the computer must keep running the encoder, and the connection must remain usable. OBS offers automatic reconnect controls; FFmpeg has protocol reconnect options in applicable cases. Neither feature is a complete availability plan. A production setup also needs supervision that can detect a stopped or stalled process and alert someone or restart it appropriately.

YouTube states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A 24/7 stream exceeds that stated boundary, so do not assume the complete broadcast will be available as one automatic archive. Decide separately how you will preserve source files or recordings if an archive is needed. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
Test and troubleshoot before going live
YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream and monitoring stream health. Check a representative section of every media type, not just a static frame or silent intro.

| Symptom | Likely check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive the stream | Live access, ingest URL, stream key, and encoder connection | Allow up to 24 hours for first-time live enablement. Recheck the URL and key in YouTube Studio and the encoder; keep the key private. |
| Stream health is poor or playback stutters | Output bitrate, available upload capacity, and system load | Compare codec, resolution, and frame rate with YouTube’s current recommendations. Test with headroom and reduce output demands if the machine or connection cannot sustain them. |
| Video freezes or the playlist ends unexpectedly | Source playback, file sequence, and end-of-file behavior | Test transitions and loop/advance behavior in the installed software version. Do not infer playlist behavior from a successful initial start. |
| Connection returns, but the stream does not | Reconnect behavior and whether the encoder process is still healthy | Check OBS reconnect settings or verify the relevant FFmpeg output behavior for that build. Add external process supervision and alerting; reconnect alone may not recover every failure. |
| Computer struggles at 60 fps | Encoder load and output frame rate | OBS notes 60 fps can be more demanding than 30 fps. Test under full scene load and consider a lower frame rate if the system cannot sustain it. |
