Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsChoose OBS if you need to build and change a visual production; choose FFmpeg if your stream is a repeatable media pipeline you want to control from scripts. Neither is established as categorically more reliable for 24/7 use. Continuous streaming also depends on the source, an always-available host and network, monitoring, and a recovery plan. For a YouTube-only stream of uploaded videos without a computer running at home, StreamNeo is a hosted alternative: it loops uploaded video from the cloud.
OBS vs FFmpeg: the practical difference
| Decision point | OBS | FFmpeg |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | Visual scene production and interactive operation—for example, switching scenes or adjusting a live desktop production. | Scripted, repeatable media processing and sending a prepared source to YouTube. |
| How you operate it | A production application with a visual workflow. | A command-line media tool suited to scripts and pipelines. |
| Source and production changes | A natural fit when you need to compose or change a visual production interactively. | A natural fit when the source and processing steps are known and can be described repeatably. |
| 24/7 reliability comparison | No controlled head-to-head evidence establishes uptime, CPU use, reconnect behavior, or recovery superiority. | No controlled head-to-head evidence establishes uptime, CPU use, reconnect behavior, or recovery superiority. |
That is a workflow comparison, not a benchmark. The encoder cannot by itself guarantee uninterrupted viewing: the media source, machine, power, network, YouTube ingest, and your response to faults all matter. Google’s Live API documentation describes a 24/7 broadcast use case, but does not promise that either OBS or FFmpeg will recover from every outage. Google’s YouTube Live API guide was last updated September 14, 2026.
Choose the setup that matches your stream
Choose OBS for a production you operate visually
Use OBS when the stream needs visual scene composition or frequent operator changes. It is the more fitting choice when you want to work in a production interface rather than encode a fixed media pipeline through commands. The exact setup depends on your OBS version and production; YouTube’s ingest requirements below apply regardless of encoder.
Choose FFmpeg for a repeatable scripted pipeline
Consider FFmpeg when you already have a defined media source and want repeatable command-line processing or automation. Plan how the process will be monitored and restarted if it exits, and how it will behave if the source, host, or network fails. A command line alone does not establish a restart policy or guarantee recovery; those depend on the surrounding system.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose hosted looping when you do not want a local machine running
For prerecorded video, StreamNeo is the first alternative to consider: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It keeps the YouTube stream running from the cloud, with uploaded video looping, at one flat price per slot for any quality up to 4K 60fps. It is for uploaded videos, not a live camera production.
Set YouTube ingest parameters before going live
Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance as the destination specification, whether you send from OBS or FFmpeg. YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), up to 60 fps, and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Select a resolution and bitrate that your upload connection can sustain reliably. YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrates guide gives codec-specific recommendations.
| H.264 output example | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s H.264 figures, not universal targets for every codec or frame rate. The same guide gives separate recommendations for AV1 and H.265; check its relevant row rather than reusing an H.264 figure. Leave headroom for normal network variation and test the actual connection under representative conditions.

Connect the encoder to YouTube and test the feed
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or open the live stream you intend to use. YouTube’s normal encoder workflow provides the server URL and stream key there.
- Configure OBS or your FFmpeg pipeline with YouTube’s ingest server URL and stream key, then apply the protocol, codec, bitrate, frame-rate, keyframe, and audio settings appropriate to your output.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it as a credential: do not put it in public scripts, logs, screenshots, or source control. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before relying on the feed.
- Send a test feed and inspect YouTube’s preview and stream health. YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to what the actual stream will contain. Check that video and sound are present and that the connection is healthy before making the broadcast public.
- Monitor after starting. Keep an eye on YouTube’s stream-health indicators and your encoder or process. For a 24/7 setup, decide in advance who or what will detect a stopped feed and how it will be restored.
Plan for continuity, archives, and multiple broadcasts
Build recovery around the whole system
For either encoder, check that the source remains available, the host stays powered and responsive, and upload capacity is adequate. Decide how you will notice a failure and restart or repair the relevant component. YouTube’s documentation does not establish a universal OBS or FFmpeg reconnect recipe or guarantee automatic recovery from every interruption, so verify recovery behavior in your own version and environment rather than assuming it.

Do not assume one complete archive for a stream over 12 hours
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its encoder guidance does not establish that a single stream longer than 12 hours will produce one complete archive. If a complete recording matters, plan a separate recording or archive workflow and verify the resulting files rather than relying on a continuous broadcast to create a single complete replay. YouTube’s live stream archive guidance covers the platform’s archive behavior.
Understand YouTube’s broadcast and stream resources
In YouTube’s Live API, a liveBroadcast represents the event viewers watch, while a liveStream represents the encoder connection settings. Google says one stream can be bound to up to three live broadcasts; its example describes a 24/7 feed continuing while a separate interview broadcast is started and ended. That resource model is useful for API-managed workflows, but ordinary encoder streaming does not require you to use the API.

When HLS is relevant—and when it is not
RTMPS is YouTube’s recommended ingest route for the standard encoder workflow. YouTube describes HLS as an ingest option for HDR or codecs unsupported by RTMP; it has higher latency because video is sent in segments, and YouTube’s ultra-low-latency option is unavailable for HLS. OBS is listed among encoders that support HLS output. Choose HLS only when its codec or HDR support is needed and the latency trade-off is acceptable.
If implementing HLS, YouTube requires HTTPS POST/PUT, TS segments lasting 1–4 seconds, and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. Follow YouTube’s current HLS ingest requirements for the complete protocol details.

A stream being technically valid does not grant rights to its audio or video. Check that you have the necessary rights for every work in a continuous playlist, including music, footage, and other people’s recordings; review YouTube’s current copyright guidance before broadcasting. Repeating material does not remove rights obligations. If monetization matters, YouTube says live-stream monetization is available to channels in the YouTube Partner Program; check the platform’s current eligibility and channel-specific conditions in its YouTube Partner Program guidance.
