OBS vs FFmpeg for a Nonstop YouTube Event Replay Stream

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose OBS if your nonstop YouTube replay needs scenes, graphics, or hands-on operator control; choose FFmpeg if it is a fixed video or known sequence that you can launch and supervise from a command line. Neither is proven universally more reliable. The better choice depends on the full setup—media, computer, power, network, encoding workload, monitoring, and recovery—and should be tested for the actual event.

Which one fits your replay stream?

Need Better fit Why
Scenes, multiple sources, graphics, or changes made by an operator OBS Its visual interface is designed to configure scenes and sources, output settings, hotkeys, and automatic reconnect.
A fixed file or known sequence played continuously FFmpeg It can read media files and write to a configured streaming output; once configured, the process can be run and supervised from a command line.
Saving recent captured footage OBS Replay Buffer Replay Buffer saves recent footage. It is not the feature for continuously playing a prerecorded video, and OBS project interface strings say it cannot be used with Custom Output (FFmpeg).

These are workflow recommendations, not a reliability ranking. The available official documentation does not establish a controlled, long-duration comparison between OBS and FFmpeg, or prove that either uses less CPU or runs longer under equivalent conditions.

What matters in either setup

Configure YouTube ingest correctly

YouTube’s encoder guidance tells you to connect with the stream URL and stream key, and recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum recommended interval of four seconds. It lists H.264, HEVC, or AV1 for video, and AAC or MP3 for audio. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and encoder setup guidance before configuring an event; platform recommendations can change.

Keep the stream key private. Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate to match the source, the available upload capacity, and YouTube’s current guidance. Test representative movement and audio, then watch YouTube’s stream health during the broadcast. Do not configure a higher output resolution or bitrate than the media and network can sustain.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Plan for duration and recording

YouTube states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish that a nonstop event lasting longer will have a complete archive. If a complete replay matters, plan a separate local recording, verify available disk space for its full duration, and test the recording workflow before going live. YouTube DVR lets viewers pause and rewind live playback; disabling it prevents seeking back during the live stream, although a recording may still become available later. See YouTube’s DVR and live-streaming guidance.

YouTube’s Live API documentation describes recurring scheduled events and a 24/7 broadcast scenario, but that is not a guarantee that every channel, event configuration, or encoder can keep one event open indefinitely. Check the channel and event settings you will actually use. YouTube Live API documentation

Set up an OBS workflow

  1. Prepare the replay source. Add the prerecorded video or media sources to an OBS scene and confirm that playback, audio, and any transitions or graphics behave as intended. Replay Buffer is for capturing recent footage, not for making the prerecorded video loop.
  2. Set the stream output. In OBS, open Settings > Stream and choose YouTube as the service. Use the YouTube stream URL and key for the event, keeping the key private. Use the secure ingest endpoint YouTube recommends.
  3. Configure video and encoding. In Settings > Output and Settings > Video, set the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate appropriate for your source and upload connection. Follow YouTube’s current recommendations for CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and compatible codecs; the exact bitrate depends on resolution and frame rate.
  4. Rehearse the full run. Test the actual source, duration, audio, resolution, frame rate, network path, reconnect behavior, and any local recording. Check YouTube stream health and confirm the scene and source remain as intended.
  5. Go live and monitor. Start streaming in OBS and monitor both the OBS output and YouTube stream health. Automatic reconnect is a control, not a guarantee that a dropped connection will be invisible to viewers or that the YouTube event will be preserved.

Set up an FFmpeg workflow

  1. Check the deployed build. Confirm that the FFmpeg build on the actual host supports the required input, codecs, and RTMPS protocol. FFmpeg documents RTMPS as RTMP over SSL; protocol and TLS behavior can depend on the build. See FFmpeg protocol documentation.
  2. Prepare the input and output. Use the prerecorded file or intended media sequence as the input, and configure the YouTube ingest URL and private stream key as the output destination. Do not expose the key in a public command history, script, log, or screenshot.
  3. Set options in the right order. FFmpeg options apply to the next input or output, so their position in the command matters. For file input that needs real-time pacing, FFmpeg documents -re as equivalent to -readrate 1; apply it to the relevant input rather than treating it as a universal output setting. Consult FFmpeg command-line documentation.
  4. Match YouTube’s live settings. Configure video and audio encoding, bitrate, frame rate, resolution, CBR, and keyframe interval for the source and YouTube’s current guidance. Use RTMPS where supported and test that the exact binary can connect successfully.
  5. Supervise and rehearse recovery. Run the command under a process supervisor appropriate to your host, monitor its logs and YouTube stream health, and test what happens after a network interruption or process exit. FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer documentation discussion includes an example of RTMP output recovery options, but options vary across builds. Confirm them against the exact deployed version and rehearse; reconnect behavior alone cannot guarantee uninterrupted viewing or preservation of the YouTube event. See the FFmpeg documentation discussion of FIFO recovery.

How to choose without guessing about reliability

  • Prefer OBS when a person needs to manage scenes, switch visuals, or respond through a graphical interface during the event.
  • Prefer FFmpeg when playback is fixed and the operator is comfortable writing, launching, and supervising a command-line process.
  • Budget operator time. A GUI may make visual changes easier; a scripted workflow can make fixed playback repeatable. Neither eliminates setup, testing, and troubleshooting.
  • Test the complete deployment. Use the actual host, media, event duration, resolution, frame rate, audio, network, recording plan, and recovery procedure. Monitor YouTube stream health during the rehearsal and event.

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Check and response
YouTube does not receive the stream Confirm the stream URL and key, that the key is current and private, and that the encoder is using a supported secure ingest endpoint. For FFmpeg, verify RTMPS support in the installed build.
Connection is unstable or YouTube reports poor stream health Check upload capacity and encoding load; reduce output demands to what the connection and host can sustain. Verify CBR and the recommended keyframe interval, then retest with representative motion and sound.
FFmpeg options appear ineffective or apply to the wrong media Review command order: options apply to the next input or output. Check that real-time pacing is attached to the intended input and validate the command against FFmpeg’s documentation.
Stream stops after an interruption Inspect encoder logs, network stability, and the restart or reconnect configuration. Rehearse recovery on the exact host and build; reconnect is not a promise of an uninterrupted viewer experience.
Expected full archive is missing Do not assume YouTube’s automatic archive statement covers broadcasts of 12 hours or longer. If completeness matters, verify a separate local recording and its storage before the event.
OBS Replay Buffer does not create a continuous replay Use a prerecorded media source and playback workflow instead. Replay Buffer captures recent footage and is not a 24/7 prerecorded loop.
