Short answer: YouTube Studio schedules the broadcast; OBS or FFmpeg sends the video and audio to it. Use OBS when a person needs to operate scenes, graphics, microphones, or other live sources. Use FFmpeg when the playlist is made from compatible prerecorded files and you want a repeatable command-line media pipeline. Neither tool, by itself, is a complete YouTube scheduling and unattended-operation system.
Scheduling and streaming are separate jobs
In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, you create or schedule the broadcast. The encoder then connects to YouTube using the stream URL and stream key to transmit its audio-video feed. A scheduled stream can be promoted so viewers can set reminders. Starting an encoder sends content; stopping it ends the transmission, but the exact transition behavior for a scheduled event should be confirmed in that event’s current settings and tested before relying on unattended operation. YouTube’s encoder instructions explain the workflow.
The same separation appears in YouTube’s API: a liveBroadcast represents the event, while a liveStream represents the feed and its streaming settings. Stream settings may be reused for scheduled events, or distinct stream resources may be used for different broadcasts. If you need scripts to create or manage events as well as send media, that is a separate task from starting an FFmpeg or OBS encoder. See YouTube’s explanation of broadcasts and streams.
OBS or FFmpeg: choose by how the show is operated
| Need | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Scenes, graphics, camera or desktop sources, microphone adjustments, and operator-driven changes | OBS | It is a graphical production and encoding environment suited to an interactive show. |
| A repeatable pipeline that sequences compatible prerecorded files | FFmpeg | Its command-line tools can concatenate media and transmit the resulting output to a streaming endpoint. |
| Unattended operation at a specific time | Neither alone | You also need a scheduler, a stable host, process supervision and logging, a recovery plan, and correct YouTube event setup. |
| Automatic creation and management of scheduled YouTube events | YouTube Studio or the Live Streaming API, in addition to an encoder | Scheduling the broadcast and transmitting the media are distinct responsibilities. |
YouTube lists OBS among its verified encoder software, but notes that listed products are not made by YouTube. That establishes OBS as an encoder option; it does not establish that every playlist-scheduling or unattended workflow is built in. Check YouTube’s current encoder guidance alongside the current OBS documentation for the version you use.

How to send a prerecorded playlist with FFmpeg
1. Prepare the YouTube event
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the live broadcast in the Live Control Room.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the event. Treat the key as a secret: do not put it in a public script, repository, or log. Use the event’s current settings to check how it behaves when an encoder connects or disconnects.
- Choose the output format and settings to match YouTube’s current encoder requirements. Test the complete scheduled-event workflow before depending on an unattended start or stop.
2. Check whether the files can be joined without re-encoding
FFmpeg’s concat demuxer can join compatible inputs without re-encoding. That is efficient, but stream-copy concatenation depends on the inputs having compatible characteristics. Check their video and audio codecs, resolution, frame rate, audio layout, and timestamps; do not assume files from different sources will join cleanly just because they play individually.
If the inputs need conversion or more flexible handling, FFmpeg’s concat filter is the recommended option when re-encoding is required. Re-encoding adds processing work and may affect quality, so choose output settings deliberately. The FFmpeg FAQ on concatenating media describes the demuxer and filter approaches.

3. Run the media pipeline at the right time
FFmpeg can process input in real time and write to streaming output formats, so it can serve as the media pipeline feeding YouTube. The media command does not create a YouTube Studio schedule, supervise itself, or guarantee recovery after an error. Arrange separately for the process to start when required, capture logs, detect failure, and stop in coordination with the broadcast. FFmpeg’s formats documentation covers its input and output capabilities.
A local playlist of video files is not the same thing as YouTube’s HLS ingestion playlist. The HLS-specific restrictions below matter only if you choose HLS output.

When OBS makes more sense
Use OBS when the playlist is only one part of a show that also needs scenes, overlays, a live camera or desktop capture, microphones, or operator-controlled changes. It offers a graphical way to assemble and encode those sources. YouTube lists OBS for general encoder use and HLS output, but the available sources do not establish a robust native unattended playlist scheduler across OBS versions. Confirm the current version’s features rather than assuming a scheduled YouTube event will start, switch media, or end exactly as desired without an operator or other automation.
For an OBS workflow, create or schedule the event in YouTube Studio, configure OBS to send to the event’s stream URL and key, and verify the scheduled event’s connection and start behavior in a test. If you require a playlist to advance or repeat unattended, verify how your chosen OBS version and any relevant playlist controls behave through the full run; the encoder listing alone does not guarantee those capabilities.

HLS rules are not rules for local video playlists
If you send an HLS stream to YouTube, its ingestion requirements include segments between 1 and 4 seconds, MPEG-TS segments, no byte ranges, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and uploads via HTTPS POST or PUT. YouTube says HLS has higher latency than RTMP and identifies OBS as HLS-capable. These requirements concern the HLS transport playlist, not the sequence of prerecorded source videos on your computer. Consult YouTube’s HLS setup instructions before configuring that protocol.

- Broadcast: create the YouTube event and verify its visibility, scheduled time, and connection settings.
- Media: validate the source files and confirm that the chosen join or conversion method produces continuous audio and video.
- Host: keep the machine or server powered, connected, and able to process the stream for the full run.
- Scheduling and supervision: start the right process at the right time, log output, detect a stalled or failed process, and define how it should recover.
- End of stream: decide how the encoder and broadcast should be stopped; do not assume every disconnect automatically ends a scheduled event as intended.
- Key security: keep the stream key out of public-facing files and rotate it if it is exposed.
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. That is an archive behavior, not a guarantee that an interrupted stream will resume or that a longer stream will be archived. Check YouTube’s current encoder instructions for the applicable details.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a prerecorded YouTube stream that should stay live without a home computer running, StreamNeo is the cloud alternative to try first: it loops uploaded videos from the cloud, at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with the first day free and no card.
- Upload a recording or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video or playlist from the cloud.
Nothing has to stay on at home. StreamNeo plays uploads rather than broadcasting a live camera, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or its plans. To start the free day, create a StreamNeo account.
Quick Recap
Troubleshooting the common failure points
- The scheduled event does not go live when the encoder starts: confirm the encoder is using the event’s stream URL and key, then check the event’s current YouTube Studio settings. Test the start transition; the documented workflow does not guarantee every event will transition automatically.
- FFmpeg stops or the playlist ends early: inspect process output and logs, verify every input path and timestamp, and confirm that the sequencing method actually repeats or advances through the intended files. A media command is not a process supervisor.
- Audio or video breaks at a file boundary: compare codecs, resolution, frame rate, audio layout, and timestamps across inputs. Use the concat filter with re-encoding when the files need transformation rather than assuming stream-copy compatibility.
- An HLS stream is rejected or unstable: check the HLS-specific segment format and duration, rolling playlist limits, lack of byte ranges, and HTTPS upload method against YouTube’s current requirements. Do not apply those rules to a local list of source files.
- The stream key may have leaked: replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder or automation that uses it; remove it from accessible logs or repositories where possible.
- The stream disconnects while unattended: inspect host connectivity, process logs, and supervision/restart behavior. A scheduled event and an encoder’s ability to transmit do not by themselves provide monitoring or recovery.
