Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallChoose OBS Studio if you want a graphical setup and may need to arrange a visual scene; choose FFmpeg if you prefer a command-line workflow with explicit, scriptable controls. Both can loop a podcast archive and send it to YouTube Live. The available documentation does not establish a universal winner for reliability or performance, so the practical choice is the workflow you can configure and supervise.
OBS or FFmpeg: which fits your workflow?
| Need | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Set up a source and manage a visual scene through menus | OBS Studio | OBS is graphical production software for capture, composition, encoding, recording, and streaming. Its media source has a Loop control. |
| Specify input and output behavior in a command | FFmpeg | FFmpeg exposes command-line options, including -stream_loop -1 for infinite input looping. |
| Know which one will run more reliably or use fewer resources | Neither can be chosen on the evidence available | There is no cited benchmark or guarantee of uninterrupted operation. Results depend on the machine, archive, network, and setup. |
Both programs do the encoder job: YouTube describes encoders as computer software or standalone hardware, while OBS describes its software as handling encoding and streaming. You do not need to buy a new computer simply because you choose one of these options; whether your current machine is suitable depends on its capabilities, which cannot be determined from a universal minimum specification here.
Prepare YouTube Live before configuring the encoder
- Check that live streaming is available for your channel. In YouTube Studio, use the current live-stream controls and complete any channel requirements YouTube presents.
- Create or open the live stream in YouTube Studio. You will need the YouTube Live server URL and stream key for either OBS or FFmpeg. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or include it in a shared command or script.
- Choose the output settings. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport and advises matching encoder output to the ingest settings. Its guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, up to 60 fps, a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate encoding. Check the latest YouTube encoder settings and bitrate guidance for the codec and resolution you select.
- Set a bitrate your upload can sustain. YouTube’s current H.264 recommendations, on a page with no publication year stated, are 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, 8 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps, and 4 Mbps for 480p at 30 fps. These are starting recommendations, not a guarantee that your particular connection can sustain them. Run a speed test and leave headroom for network variation.
- Test before relying on the stream. YouTube Help says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Test with audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast, then monitor stream health in YouTube Studio.
Loop the archive in OBS Studio
- Open OBS and create a scene. Add a scene if the scene list is empty. Add a visual source such as a still image or other appropriate on-screen material if you want the broadcast to show more than the media itself.
- Add the archive as a media source. In the scene’s Sources panel, select the add control and choose Media Source. Name it, select the podcast file, and enable Loop. The OBS interface strings document a local-file media source and Loop control; exact labels or layout may vary by version.
- Configure audio and video output. In Settings, set the stream service and server to the YouTube Live details, and set the stream key. In the output and video settings, select a codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio format that conform to YouTube’s current guidance and your connection.
- Start with a test. Confirm that the archive plays, returns to the beginning, and has usable audio. Start the stream and check YouTube Studio’s preview and stream-health indicators before treating the setup as ready for a long run.
OBS offers a visual way to assemble sources and control the broadcast. Looping a source does not itself guarantee that the application, computer, network, or YouTube connection will remain uninterrupted.
Loop the archive with FFmpeg
FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 option requests infinite looping of an input. A basic template is:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "podcast-archive.mp4" -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 8M -maxrate 8M -bufsize 16M -r 30 -g 60 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -f flv "rtmps://SERVER-URL/STREAM-KEY"
This is an illustrative H.264/AAC template, not a universal preset. Replace the file path and RTMPS destination with your own values; obtain the server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. Keep the key private. The example uses 720p30’s YouTube-recommended H.264 video bitrate of 8 Mbps and a 60-frame GOP at 30 fps, corresponding to a two-second keyframe interval. Confirm that the chosen output resolution, audio settings, and bitrate match the archive and current YouTube ingest requirements; scale or otherwise convert the source only if needed. FFmpeg builds differ, and the command may need adjustment for the codecs available in your installation.
- Install a suitable FFmpeg build for your operating system and verify that it includes the encoders used in the command, such as
libx264and AAC. - Save the command in a private script or run it in a terminal. Avoid placing a real stream key in a script that will be shared, committed to source control, or readable by others.
- Start with a short test. Check that the input opens, audio is present, video reaches YouTube, and the stream health is acceptable before using the loop for a long broadcast.
The command makes the loop and output parameters explicit, which can suit a scripted workflow. It does not configure automatic restart after a crash, network failure, or lost ingest; no general recovery method or long-run guarantee is established here.

Plan for a continuous stream and its archive
A looping source can keep supplying media, but a 24/7 broadcast also depends on the encoder process, computer, network, and YouTube ingest staying available. Neither OBS’s Loop control nor FFmpeg’s infinite-loop option proves uninterrupted operation or automatic recovery. Plan how you will notice failures and restore the stream rather than assuming that looping alone handles them.
Do not assume YouTube will create one complete archive for an indefinite broadcast. YouTube Help says, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” Its guidance does not promise automatic archiving for streams longer than 12 hours. Check YouTube Studio’s current stream controls and decide how you will preserve source recordings or divide broadcasts if you need an archive.

Copyright and reused-content checks for a podcast archive
- Confirm you have the rights to every element. A podcast archive may include licensed music, guest contributions, clips, or other material whose permissions do not cover continuous public rebroadcast. A stream key and encoder do not grant those rights.
- Review YouTube’s policies and any applicable licenses. Content permission, copyright enforcement, and monetization eligibility are separate questions. Do not assume that owning or having uploaded a recording makes every use permissible.
- Make the live format useful and accurately presented. Replaying an archive as a live stream does not turn it into a new live recording. Label and describe the stream clearly, and assess YouTube’s current rules for repetitive or reused content if monetization matters.
Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive the stream | Server URL, stream key, selected service, and RTMPS destination | Copy the current server URL and key from YouTube Studio, re-enter them carefully, and confirm that the encoder is using the intended protocol and stream. |
| Stream health reports instability or dropped frames | Upload capacity and output bitrate | Run a speed test, reduce the output bitrate or resolution if needed, and test again. Do not treat YouTube’s recommended bitrate as a promise about your connection. |
| Video or audio is rejected or missing | Codec, container/output mode, frame rate, keyframe interval, and audio format | Compare the encoder output with YouTube’s current ingest guidance; use supported video and audio settings and a keyframe interval within YouTube’s recommendation. |
| OBS reaches the end and stops instead of repeating | Media Source loop setting | Open the source properties and verify that Loop is enabled for the selected local file. |
| FFmpeg plays only once or exits | Input loop option and process error output | Confirm -stream_loop -1 appears before the relevant -i input, then inspect the terminal output for file, codec, or connection errors. |
| Broadcast stops after a long period | Encoder process, host computer, network, and YouTube ingest | Check which component failed and restart it as needed. The loop controls do not by themselves provide automatic restart or uninterrupted service. |
| No full YouTube archive appears | Stream duration | Check YouTube Studio and your own recording plan; YouTube’s cited automatic-archive statement covers streams under 12 hours, not longer ones. |
