OBS vs. FFmpeg: Which Uses Less Electricity for a 24/7 YouTube Stream?

There is no universal OBS or FFmpeg electricity winner. A fair comparison uses matched stream settings and cumulative wall-energy measurements on the same PC.

Neither OBS nor FFmpeg is guaranteed to use less electricity. The answer depends on your PC, encoder, stream settings, and processing workload; compare them on the same machine with a plug-in energy monitor measuring cumulative energy over equal runs. CPU or GPU utilization alone cannot tell you which setup draws less power at the wall.

Why the software name does not determine electricity use

OBS and FFmpeg can use different encoding and processing paths. The electricity consumed by a 24/7 YouTube PC also depends on the rest of the system, the video resolution and frame rate, and how much work the stream requires. Official OBS guidance says CPU requirements vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity; meeting its basic system requirements does not guarantee a machine can stream or record successfully (OBS system requirements).

OBS may render as well as encode

OBS does more than encode a video: it composites and renders scenes on the GPU. A scene containing only a media source is not the same workload as one with animated overlays, filters, or other visual elements. Competing GPU work can also affect encoding performance (OBS encoding performance troubleshooting).

Encoder choice changes the comparison

OBS supports software encoding and hardware encoders. Hardware encoding shifts encoding work from the CPU to a specialized component in the GPU. OBS generally recommends hardware encoders for performance, but that is not proof they reduce total wall energy on every PC; hardware generation, driver, quality, and compatibility matter (OBS hardware encoding).

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

FFmpeg is configurable too, with hardware-encoding and hardware-acceleration options (FFmpeg documentation). If you compare OBS using a hardware encoder with FFmpeg using software encoding, you are comparing different configurations—not just the applications.

How to compare OBS and FFmpeg fairly

  1. Use the same system and source. Keep the PC, power supply, operating-system power profile, video file, audio, and network conditions the same. Match output resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and destination where possible. YouTube recommends CBR and RTMPS in its live encoder settings guidance; record any differences between the two runs.
  2. Define what the meter includes. Decide whether you are measuring just the PC or the PC plus display and other equipment, then measure the same devices in both runs. If the display is unnecessary for unattended streaming, leave it off in both. DOE advises turning off monitors when a networked computer must remain on (DOE guidance on energy-efficient computers).
  3. Record the encoding and processing paths. For each application, note the encoder, preset, hardware-acceleration settings, filters, and other processing. Aim for equivalent output quality and streaming goals; do not label different encoder paths an application-only test.
  4. Measure energy for equal intervals. Allow startup and transient activity to settle, then log cumulative energy for the same sufficiently long period in each run. A plug-in energy monitor with cumulative kWh logging is useful here: it measures consumption; it does not reduce it. Check its electrical rating and outlet compatibility. DOE says that when consumption fluctuates, energy should be measured over time and divided by the measurement period to determine average power (DOE Measuring Standby Power).
  5. Calculate and report the result. Average watts = measured kWh ÷ elapsed hours × 1,000. To estimate annual energy for continuous operation, multiply average kW by 8,760 hours. That is an extrapolation from your measured interval, not a year-long test. Report both kWh and average watts, and identify the extrapolation as an estimate.
  6. Reduce run-to-run bias. If practical, repeat the runs and alternate their order. Avoid unrelated updates, downloads, backups, changes to room cooling, and other background work. Note interruptions or failed stream intervals rather than silently excluding them.
  7. Make the result reproducible. Report the PC specifications, operating-system power profile, software versions, meter, interval length, stream settings, encoder paths, and any uncertainty. A result without these details is difficult to apply to another PC.

DOE’s FEMP standby-power procedure specifies instrument uncertainty below 2% at 95% confidence for measurements above 0.5 W. It also specifies resolution of 0.01 W or less below 10 W, and 0.1 W or less above 10 W up to 100 W. These are requirements for that standby-measurement procedure—not evidence that every consumer plug meter meets them or that the procedure precisely covers a live-PC workload.

What your result can—and cannot—show

A matched wall-meter comparison can show which of your tested configurations used less energy during the measured intervals. It cannot establish a universal OBS-versus-FFmpeg winner. The official documentation cited here does not provide an apples-to-apples wattage benchmark for both applications running the same PC, video, encoder, settings, and YouTube stream. Do not infer energy use from CPU or GPU percentages, or turn a short test into a guaranteed yearly bill saving.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the reason for comparing software is that a home PC would otherwise stay on around the clock, StreamNeo is a different option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it also includes automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams to YouTube only. See StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
