OBS YouTube Stream Bitrate for a 24/7 720p Playlist Channel

For an OBS YouTube playlist at 720p30, use 8 Mbps H.264 video bitrate, CBR and 2-second keyframes. Plan upload capacity for audio, overhead and YouTube’s 20% headroom recommendation.

For a 24/7 YouTube playlist streamed from OBS at 720p and 30 fps using H.264, start with an 8 Mbps video bitrate. YouTube lists 3 Mbps as the minimum for that format. Use CBR, set keyframes every 2 seconds, and plan for at least about 9.75 Mbps of sustained upload capacity with YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom and 128 Kbps stereo audio. A 24/7 schedule does not call for a separate bitrate; it makes connection stability, monitoring and recovery planning more important.

Recommended OBS settings for 720p30

YouTube’s live encoder settings distinguish recommendations by codec, resolution and frame rate. For a 1280×720, 30 fps H.264 stream, use the following as the starting configuration. These are live ingest settings, not recommendations for encoding a video you upload to YouTube.

Setting 720p30 guidance
Resolution and frame rate 1280×720 at 30 fps
Video codec H.264
Video bitrate 8 Mbps recommended; 3 Mbps minimum in YouTube’s table
Rate control CBR
Keyframe interval 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds
Audio AAC or MP3; 128 Kbps stereo is the listed advanced-setting recommendation
Ingest protocol RTMP or RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS

See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions. YouTube has a separate table for uploaded-video encoding, so an upload-video bitrate should not be substituted for the live-stream recommendation: YouTube recommended upload encoding settings.

If you use AV1 or H.265/HEVC

For 720p30, YouTube’s table lists 6 Mbps recommended and 2 Mbps minimum for AV1 or H.265/HEVC. Those are different codec recommendations from H.264’s 8 Mbps recommended and 3 Mbps minimum; do not apply one row to another codec.

How much upload speed a 24/7 stream needs

The 8 Mbps recommendation is video bitrate only. Add the audio bitrate to estimate the stream’s nominal total: 8 Mbps video plus 128 Kbps stereo audio is about 8.128 Mbps, before transport overhead. YouTube recommends leaving 20% of available upload capacity unused. Applying that margin to the nominal total gives a planning target of roughly 9.75 Mbps or more of sustained upload capacity. This is arithmetic based on the listed settings, not a separate YouTube threshold.

Include any backup stream in the capacity plan, and allow additional margin if the connection varies or other people and devices use it. YouTube explains the headroom recommendation in its streaming tips. A speed-test peak is not evidence that a connection can sustain the required upload continuously.

Data use at 8 Mbps

At a constant 8 Mbps, video payload alone is approximately 86.4 decimal GB per day: 8 megabits per second multiplied by 86,400 seconds, divided by 8 bits per byte. Audio and transport overhead increase the actual traffic. This is a calculation, not a YouTube-published data-use figure.

What changes when the playlist runs 24/7

YouTube’s reviewed live encoder table does not add a duration-based bitrate multiplier. A playlist running around the clock therefore does not need a special “24/7 bitrate” under that guidance. The prolonged runtime changes the operational risk: the computer, OBS, playlist source, network and power must keep working, and a disruption can interrupt the stream.

YouTube automatically transcodes a live stream into multiple output formats for viewers, but that does not eliminate the need to send a stable ingest stream at your chosen settings. Its guidance recommends testing with sound and movement representative of the stream, then monitoring stream health and messages. Testing and monitoring help identify problems; they do not guarantee uninterrupted operation.

Set up and verify the OBS-to-YouTube stream

  1. Choose the YouTube live stream settings. In YouTube Studio, create or open the live stream and use the stream key shown for that broadcast. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or share it. YouTube’s live stream settings guidance covers managing those settings.
  2. Enter the ingest details in OBS. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube or the appropriate YouTube ingest service, and enter the stream key. OBS labels can change by version; confirm the selected service and key before starting.
  3. Set the output encoder. In Settings > Output, set the streaming encoder to H.264 and rate control to CBR. Set the video bitrate to 8000 Kbps, the keyframe interval to 2 seconds, and audio to 128 Kbps stereo if available in your chosen output configuration. If the output mode hides advanced streaming fields, switch to the mode that exposes encoder controls.
  4. Set the video canvas and output. In Settings > Video, choose 1280×720 output at 30 fps for the intended 720p30 stream. Make sure the playlist or media source is framed correctly in the output preview.
  5. Run a representative test. Start a private or otherwise appropriate test stream and let the playlist play through representative audio and motion. Check the YouTube stream health panel and OBS for dropped frames or connection warnings before relying on the setup for continuous use.
  6. Plan for recovery. Confirm what happens if OBS, the computer, power or internet connection fails. Keep the stream key secure, and know how you will restart the encoder and check YouTube’s live status after an interruption.

Common problems and fixes

  • YouTube reports unstable or insufficient bandwidth: check sustained upload capacity rather than download speed; reduce competing uploads and devices, or lower the bitrate while remaining within YouTube’s listed minimum for the chosen codec and format.
  • Stream health reports dropped frames: the issue may be network instability or an encoder unable to keep up. Review OBS statistics and YouTube’s health messages, reduce competing load, and test again before leaving the stream unattended.
  • The stream will not connect: verify the selected YouTube service, ingest server and current stream key. If a key was regenerated, update OBS with the new one.
  • Audio is missing or out of sync: check that the correct OBS audio source is active, confirm the selected audio encoder and bitrate, and test the actual playlist audio before going live.
  • The playlist stops advancing: confirm the playlist source is configured to repeat and that the media files remain accessible to OBS. A live connection can remain open even if the intended content has stopped, so inspect the preview and stream output.
  • The stream ends after a network interruption: YouTube notes that network disruption can break a stream. Reconnect or restart the encoder as needed, then inspect YouTube Studio’s stream status; do not assume the playlist alone will restore the live broadcast.

Copyright and channel-policy checks

Streaming a playlist does not grant rights to its music, video or other material. Use content you created, licensed, or otherwise have permission to broadcast, and review YouTube’s current rules and any rights restrictions that apply to your channel and content. A technically healthy stream is not necessarily eligible for monetization or free of copyright claims; no bitrate setting changes those outcomes.
