YouTube’s current live encoder guidance lists CBR for ingest. Choose your bitrate separately: the right target depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate, and your connection must sustain it with headroom.
CBR or VBR for YouTube Live?
For YouTube live ingest, choose CBR. YouTube Help lists “Bitrate encoding: CBR” in its current encoder settings guidance, accessed October 3, 2026: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. That destination-specific guidance is the reason to use CBR here; it is not a universal rule for every encoder task.
| Mode | What it does | For an OBS YouTube live stream |
|---|---|---|
| CBR | Targets a steady bitrate. | Use it by default, in line with YouTube’s listed live-ingest setting. |
| VBR | Allows bitrate to vary. Some encoder-specific implementations offer a quality target and a maximum bitrate. | OBS exposes VBR options for some encoders, but their availability does not replace YouTube’s CBR recommendation for live ingest. |
CBR does not guarantee a stable stream on its own. Your upload connection still needs enough consistent capacity for the stream.
Choose the bitrate separately from the mode
Setting CBR determines how the encoder manages bitrate; it does not determine the bitrate target. YouTube’s recommended values vary with codec, resolution, and frame rate. For H.264, YouTube’s current guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, gives these examples:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| H.264 output | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps |
These are YouTube recommendations, not guaranteed quality outcomes. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate table for the codec and output format you intend to use rather than applying these H.264 examples to other combinations.
Set the mode in OBS
The control names and available rate-control options depend on the encoder you selected and the OBS output mode. In OBS, open Settings, then Output, and locate the streaming encoder’s rate-control setting. Choose CBR for YouTube Live and set the bitrate target separately. If you cannot find the same label or options, check which encoder and output mode are active; do not assume every encoder exposes identical controls.

For NVENC specifically, OBS documents a “Variable Bitrate with Target Quality” mode that lets the encoder seek a quality target while setting a maximum bitrate. The OBS page describes this as a mode for limiting file size or stream bitrate; it is an encoder-specific option, not YouTube’s recommended live-ingest mode. See OBS Advanced NVENC Options (31.0), dated August 21, 2024. OBS’s NVENC implementation also shows encoder-specific CBR and VBR choices; the master branch can change, so it is implementation evidence rather than a version-pinned user guide.
Make sure your connection has enough upload capacity
Your total outgoing stream bitrate must fit within the available upload bandwidth. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom and using a reliable connection. Its encoder guidance also recommends a speed test to check upload bitrate, while its streaming tips explain the bandwidth recommendation.

- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Compare the stream’s total bitrate—not just video bitrate—with your available upload capacity.
- Leave the recommended 20% margin rather than setting the stream right at the measured upload limit.
- Use a reliable connection; a suitable rate-control mode cannot compensate for insufficient or inconsistent upload bandwidth.
Set keyframes and test before going live
YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says the interval should not exceed four seconds. Set the keyframe interval in the encoder controls if they are available, then test the actual stream before relying on it.
- Configure the stream with the same resolution, frame rate, encoder, and audio conditions you expect to use live.
- Run a test with similar audio and motion. A mostly static screen may not reveal how the setup behaves with fast gameplay or other demanding motion.
- Check YouTube’s stream health before and during the broadcast. If it reports an issue, use the health feedback to investigate rather than assuming CBR alone will prevent dropped frames.
YouTube’s live encoder settings include the keyframe guidance; its testing advice recommends testing before going live.

When VBR may still make sense
VBR can be relevant in encoder-specific workflows, particularly where an option targets quality while enforcing a maximum bitrate. OBS’s NVENC documentation describes that kind of control. But if the job is sending an OBS live stream to YouTube, keep the platform recommendation in view: use CBR for ingest. YouTube’s live recommendation should not be carried over automatically to local recording, which is a separate workflow.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you are broadcasting uploaded video as a continuous YouTube stream rather than a live gameplay capture, StreamNeo runs the loop from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay powered on at home; it handles uploaded video, not a live camera feed.
