If OBS drops a YouTube stream after it has been running for a few hours, the timing alone does not identify the cause. Start by recording what OBS and YouTube report at the exact failure time, then isolate the encoder, local network, internet route, and YouTube ingest path one at a time. OBS’s guidance classifies intermittent disconnections and dropped frames as a connection problem between your computer and the remote ingest server—not proof of a particular router fault, stream-key expiry, or scheduled timeout.
What a disconnect every few hours tells you—and what it does not
OBS connects directly to the streaming service; there is no OBS streaming server between your computer and YouTube. OBS Project’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide, dated September 30, 2024, says intermittent disconnections and dropped frames indicate a network issue between the computer and remote stream ingest server. OBS describes dropped frames as the encoder compensating when the connection is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate; too many can disconnect the stream.
This identifies the failure class, not the faulty component. The interval of a few hours is a reason to capture time-correlated evidence; the available official guidance does not establish a special several-hour timeout mechanism for OBS-to-YouTube streams. Also distinguish a broadcaster disconnect from viewer buffering: OBS treats dropped frames and a disconnected encoder as a connection issue, while buffering on a viewer’s device is a different symptom.
Capture evidence at the next failure
Before changing settings, write down the time and collect the status from both ends. YouTube’s live stream metrics guidance says Stream status includes specific error messages with instructions; its live streaming error reference describes timestamped messages.

- In OBS, note the dropped-frame counter and connection indicator, and whether OBS reports a disconnect.
- In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, inspect Stream health and record any status or error message and its timestamp. Note whether YouTube ended or paused the event, or whether the encoder simply stopped reaching it.
- Save the OBS log covering the failure. A timestamp lets you compare OBS’s connection events with YouTube’s status and any local network interruption.
- Record whether the picture and audio were still behaving normally in the encoder output, whether the local archive (if enabled) continued, and the CPU load around the event.
These observations separate a transport failure from an encoder/output problem and give you useful evidence before you restart or alter the setup.
Diagnose in order, changing one thing at a time
1. Check YouTube Stream health and the encoder output
In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room for the event and read the timestamped Stream health message rather than relying on the fact that viewers say the stream stopped. YouTube’s troubleshooting live streaming issues recommends checking that the encoder is up to date, the picture and sound are correct in the encoder, dashboard errors, CPU load, and a local recording. If the encoder output looks healthy while delivery is failing, YouTube says an outbound internet connection issue may be involved.

If the encoder reports an error when trying to start a stream, YouTube’s guidance for third-party encoders says to create a new stream key in Live Control Room and update the encoder with it. That is a branch for an encoder start error, not a general remedy for a stream that ran successfully for hours; do not assume the key expired just because the failure recurs after a similar interval.
2. Check whether the configured bitrate is sustainable
OBS recommends trying a lower video bitrate and offers 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for bitrate selection. Treat that as a starting estimate, not a guarantee: upload speed can vary, other devices and applications can consume capacity, and YouTube’s limits depend on the chosen stream settings. If reducing bitrate prevents dropped frames, it may mitigate a constrained or unstable connection, but it also reduces video quality and does not by itself repair the underlying route.

Check YouTube’s encoder guidance for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than applying one bitrate number to every setup. YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed 4 seconds in its encoder settings guidance. This is a configuration reference, not evidence that keyframe timing causes a recurring disconnect.
3. Isolate the ingest path and streaming service
If YouTube offers another ingest server in the encoder’s server list, test it and see whether the result changes. OBS also recommends trying another streaming service as a diagnostic. If another service remains stable under comparable conditions but YouTube does not, that points toward a service-specific path or ingest issue; it does not mean OBS can fix a service-side problem. Record the server, service, time, and outcome so comparisons are meaningful.

4. Separate Wi-Fi, router, and local-software effects
- Wi-Fi: Repeat the stream over Ethernet if practical. OBS recommends a wired connection because Wi-Fi can be unstable. If Ethernet solves the drops, investigate the wireless link rather than replacing unrelated equipment.
- VPN or security software: Temporarily test whether either interferes with the stream, then restore protection. If the test implicates security software, add an OBS exception rather than leaving protection disabled.
- Network optimization software: Check for traffic-prioritization or network-optimization tools that may alter OBS traffic; test without them one at a time.
- Router and modem: Restart the equipment as a basic connectivity check. OBS lists faulty network equipment and cables as possible causes, but a restart or a cable replacement is not proof that the equipment is defective.
- Drivers: Check that network drivers are current if other tests suggest a computer-side network issue.
5. Use OBS network options as controlled tests
OBS’s connection guide lists optional network settings that may help some users; they are not universal fixes. On Windows, test network optimizations or TCP pacing only if available in your OBS version, and check the log for added diagnostic detail. “Bind to IP” should ordinarily remain at Default; an IPv4-only test can help isolate a path issue, but if it makes no difference, OBS recommends returning to the default IPv4 and IPv6 behavior.
Dynamic bitrate can lower bitrate automatically when congestion causes dropped frames. It may keep a stream connected at reduced quality, but it does not fix the root cause. Change only one option per test and note whether the symptom, dropped-frame count, or YouTube status message changes.

Match the symptom to the next action
| Evidence at failure | Likely area to isolate | Next test |
|---|---|---|
| OBS shows dropped frames before disconnect; YouTube reports loss of incoming data | Outbound connection, bitrate, or ingest route | Lower bitrate; compare Ethernet with Wi-Fi; try another available ingest server. |
| OBS output is healthy but YouTube reports a specific Stream health error | YouTube ingest or an error-specific encoder requirement | Follow the instruction attached to the timestamped YouTube error; report it to YouTube if unresolved. |
| Encoder picture/audio or local recording is also faulty, or CPU load is high | Encoder, computer load, or source/output configuration | Check encoder version, output, CPU load, and local archive as YouTube recommends. |
| Only one streaming service or ingest server fails | Service-specific route or ingest path | Compare another server or service, keeping other settings and conditions as similar as possible. |
| The problem happens on Wi-Fi but not Ethernet | Wireless link | Use wired networking for the stream and investigate the Wi-Fi path. |
Common dead ends to avoid
- Refreshing the stream key without a matching error: YouTube recommends a new key for an encoder start error, not recurring drops after hours of successful streaming.
- Buying network hardware before testing: OBS identifies cables and network equipment as possible failure points, but recommends diagnosis first. Try wired networking and compare results before replacing a router or cable.
- Assuming lower bitrate is a complete fix: It may stabilize a constrained link while lowering image quality; it can leave congestion or a routing problem unresolved.
- Disabling security software permanently: Use a temporary test only. If it identifies interference, restore the software and configure an OBS exception.
- Treating keyframe interval as the proven cause: YouTube’s 2-second recommendation (no more than 4 seconds) is a general encoder setting, not a diagnosis for a particular timed disconnect.
When to contact your ISP or YouTube
Contact your ISP if tests point to an outbound path issue—especially if Ethernet, alternate ingest, and bitrate tests still show interruptions. Provide timestamps, OBS log details, YouTube Stream health messages, and whether other devices or services are affected. OBS notes that an ISP may be able to investigate route changes or unexpected congestion along the connection.
If OBS’s encoder output and outbound connectivity appear healthy but YouTube Live Control Room reports a specific error, follow that error’s instruction first. If the error remains unresolved, report it to YouTube with its timestamp and the checks already performed.
