If OBS keeps reconnecting while you stream to YouTube through an Airtel 5G hotspot, first test whether your sustained upload can carry the stream—not whether a speed test briefly reports a high number. Lower the bitrate to leave bandwidth headroom, monitor OBS and YouTube stream health, then compare connections or ingest servers one change at a time. Reconnects point to a network path problem, but they do not by themselves prove Airtel is responsible.
What repeated reconnects tell you—and what they do not
OBS says dropped frames and intermittent disconnections indicate a network issue between your computer and the remote ingest server. That makes the connection the first thing to investigate, but it does not identify which part is failing: the phone-to-computer hotspot link, cellular conditions, carrier routing, the route to YouTube, or a computer-side network setting could be involved. OBS Project’s connection troubleshooting guide is a useful starting point.
A fast download result does not establish that your upload can sustain a live stream. Upload capacity can change during a session, so use repeated tests during the actual streaming window and treat a momentary peak as insufficient evidence. Airtel’s general hotspot troubleshooting guidance does not specify an OBS setting, diagnose your line, or establish a universal Airtel 5G upload speed. The cause for your connection has to be tested.
Capture evidence before changing settings
Record enough information to tell whether a change actually helped. YouTube recommends testing with a representative stream and monitoring stream health; see its live encoder settings and troubleshooting guide and streaming tips.

- In YouTube Live Control Room, record stream-health messages and any warnings, with timestamps.
- Check whether the phone’s hotspot itself disconnects, or whether the phone remains connected while OBS loses its stream.
- Repeat upload tests while streaming or immediately before a representative test stream. Keep the results with their times; a single result cannot describe changing conditions.
Reduce bitrate to match sustained upload
YouTube Help advises that the total stream bitrate must fit within available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% spare capacity. OBS Project’s connection guide, dated September 30, 2024, suggests using 75% of total upload speed as a starting point. Apply either as a conservative guide to upload that remains available under representative conditions, not to the best speed-test peak. For YouTube’s advice, see Streaming tips; for OBS’s, see Stream Connection Troubleshooting.
YouTube’s encoder recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate. The figures below are for H.264; they are platform guidance, not a guarantee that a mobile connection can sustain the bitrate. Consult the current YouTube encoder table for AV1 or H.265 rather than applying H.264 figures to those codecs.

| H.264 stream setting | YouTube-listed minimum | YouTube-listed recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
These minimum and recommended values do not override the connection’s actual capacity. If you cannot sustain a setting with headroom, lower the bitrate; if the stream still drops frames or reconnects, reduce resolution or frame rate as well. Raise quality again only after a representative test remains stable. Judge settings by sustained upload headroom, OBS’s dropped-frame and reconnect behavior, YouTube’s stream-health feedback, and the resulting picture—not by a brief peak.
Check the YouTube encoder settings
For a YouTube live stream, the encoder guidance specifies constant bitrate (CBR) and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Set these in the relevant OBS output and video settings for the encoder and stream profile you are using; exact control names can vary with OBS version and selected encoder. Confirm the selected codec before using YouTube’s bitrate table. These settings help align the stream with YouTube’s guidance, but they cannot make an unstable upload reliable.

Try dynamic bitrate only as a fallback
In OBS, enable Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion as a fallback if a fixed bitrate cannot be sustained. OBS can reduce the outgoing bitrate when congestion occurs, which may keep data flowing at lower image quality. It does not repair changing radio conditions, congestion, or carrier routing. If you use it, still investigate the cause and assess whether the lower quality is acceptable.
Isolate the failing part of the connection
Change one factor at a time and note the result. This helps distinguish a YouTube-route issue from a general hotspot or computer problem; a comparison is diagnostic, not a fix by itself.

- Try another YouTube ingest server. If OBS offers a different server selection, test it with the same bitrate and other stream settings. Record whether reconnects change.
- Compare another internet connection. Run a representative test with a different connection if one is available, keeping the OBS settings constant. A stable result elsewhere narrows the problem toward the Airtel hotspot path, but does not identify the precise cause.
- Compare another streaming service only as a test. If appropriate, a different service can help establish whether the symptom is specific to the YouTube route. It does not fix a connection that is unstable more generally.
- Test the phone-to-computer link. OBS recommends wired networking because Wi-Fi can be unstable. If both devices support USB tethering, a compatible data cable is one possible test of the local link; check device compatibility. A cable does not improve the phone’s cellular signal, and USB tethering is not guaranteed to stabilize Airtel 5G.
Check OBS and computer-side networking
- Update OBS and inspect its log for the session where the reconnect occurred.
- Check whether a VPN, firewall or security program, network-prioritization utility, or “optimizer” is affecting the connection. Test changes carefully, following your security software’s guidance.
- In OBS’s network settings, confirm Bind to IP is set to Default.
- OBS suggests testing IPv4-only if needed; restore IPv4/IPv6 if that does not change the behavior.
- OBS’s network optimizations and TCP pacing options are Windows-only in its current connection guide. Do not assume those options apply to other operating systems.
When to contact Airtel or YouTube
If OBS and YouTube indicate a healthy encoder but outbound connectivity remains unstable, give Airtel support specific evidence rather than only saying that 5G is fast or slow. Include the location, dates and times of failures, repeated upload results, stream bitrate, OBS log, YouTube stream-health messages, and whether the hotspot itself stayed connected. YouTube also advises contacting your internet service provider when connection tests show a problem. The evidence can help support investigate, but the supplied symptoms alone cannot establish the root cause.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous YouTube stream of uploaded recordings rather than a live camera or OBS production, StreamNeo is a different approach: upload a recording or make a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live.
