Square Enix announced it for Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 in July 2025; it launched on those systems and other listed consoles on December 4, 2025, followed by Steam on December 5. Its defining additions are a customizable protagonist and a hometown players can rebuild.
What is Octopath Traveler 0?
Octopath Traveler 0 is a single-player, turn-based RPG developed by Square Enix’s Team Asano. It tells a standalone story set before Octopath Traveler, in the world of Orsterra, centered on restoring a hometown and seeking retribution over divine rings. Square Enix announced it during the July 31, 2025 Nintendo Direct Partner Showcase.

The game uses HD-2D presentation, combining pixel-art characters and environments with 3D effects. It retains the series’ Path Actions and Break and Boost battle system, while adding character creation and town building. Square Enix’s official game page describes the title and its setting.
What do you do in the game?
Create a protagonist and rebuild a town
Unlike the first two mainline games’ ensemble of fixed leads, Octopath Traveler 0 lets you create the protagonist. Nintendo’s US listing says customization covers appearance, voice, motions and a favorite dish. The story’s restoration premise also becomes a town-building feature: you can develop your hometown and invite companions to live there.

Build a larger party
Nintendo lists more than 30 available allies and battles with parties of up to eight characters. Its listing also describes a skill system that lets players pass skills learned by allies to other characters. These are game features, not claims about sales or performance.
When and where did Octopath Traveler 0 release?
The game released December 4, 2025, for Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S and Microsoft Store. The Steam release followed on December 5, 2025. Dates and platform details are from the Square Enix announcement and release information.

Which Nintendo version should you buy?
Choose the edition made for the console you own. Nintendo’s US digital listing distinguishes the Switch 2 version from a separate Nintendo Switch version; the Switch 2 edition cannot be played on the original Switch. The listing also notes a Digital Deluxe Edition that combines the base game with paid additional content. The precise contents and price depend on the edition and region, so check the storefront listing before buying.

Is there a demo?
Square Enix announced a free prologue demo in November 2025 for Switch 2, Switch, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Steam and Microsoft Store. It offered three hours from the beginning of the game, let players choose a protagonist and carried save data into the full game. Because that announcement was made before launch, check your platform’s storefront to see whether the demo is currently available.
