Octopath Traveler II Reviews: Is It Worth Playing?

Octopath Traveler II earns generally favorable review snapshots for its strategic combat, stories and presentation, but its retro-JRPG style is not for everyone.

Octopath Traveler II is a strong pick if you enjoy turn-based JRPGs with strategic combat, distinct protagonists and a retro-inspired presentation. Reviewers have generally praised its battles, stories, visuals and music, though its style and measured pace may not win over players who bounced off the first game or dislike classic JRPG conventions.

What kind of game is Octopath Traveler II?

Square Enix’s role-playing game follows eight travelers, each with a separate story and a unique set of Path Actions. As Square Enix puts it, “Each traveler has a unique set of Path Actions they can use to battle townspeople, obtain items, take others along in their travels, and more.” The game also builds on the series’ job and skill development and Break/Boost battle system, while adding new mechanics.

That mix of character-led stories, exploration and turn-based strategy is central to its appeal: the party is not just a set of interchangeable fighters, and how you approach encounters and towns can vary by protagonist.

What do reviews say about Octopath Traveler II?

Metacritic’s surfaced game-page snapshot, accessed in 2026, lists an 85/100 critic score from 59 reviews and an 8.3/10 user rating from 546 ratings; both are categorized as “Generally Favorable.” Metacritic’s Switch critic listing also shows 85. These are changing page snapshots, and the user rating is not the same kind of measure as a critic aggregate.

OCTOPATH TRAVELER II
  • Begin your adventure as one of eight new travelers, each with their own origins, motivations, and unique skills.
  • The series’ HD-2D graphics, a fusion of retro pixel art and 3DCG, have reached even greater heights.
  • The story takes place in Solistia, where diverse cultures thrive from east to west and the industries of the new era flourish. You can sail the seas and explore every corner of a world that changes from day to night.
  • Each traveler has a unique set of Path Actions they can use to battle townspeople, obtain items, take others along in their travels, and more. Where will you go? What will you do? Every path is yours to take.
  • Familiar mechanics from the original game have been preserved, like the freedom to develop your travelers’ jobs and skills, as well as the Break and Boost system that made battles so exhilarating. New mechanics have also been added.

Steam’s English-language user-review snapshot, accessed in 2026, is 93% positive from 4,765 reviews. That is a PC storefront measure of player sentiment, not a critic score, and should not be compared directly with Metacritic’s pooled critic score.

Across the surfaced critic summaries, recurring positives include strategic combat, flexible character progression, stories, visual presentation and music. The criticism is more audience-specific: one excerpt describes the pace as slow by contemporary expectations, while another cautions that the retro-JRPG style may not appeal to everyone. These are individual review observations, not a unanimous verdict.

  • New story content – Experience original, streamlined story content and quests with new paths to achieve.
  • Character creation – Create a customized protagonist with unique appearance, voice, motions and more.
  • Town building system – Rebuild the protagonist's town as the story progresses with evolving town reconstruction mechanics and development while inviting new people to live in the town.*
  • HD-2D Visuals – The series’ iconic graphic style returns, bringing a striking blend of retro 2D characters in a beautiful 3D world.

Who is likely to enjoy it—and who might not?

Good fit if you want

  • Turn-based battles where planning around Break and Boost matters.
  • Eight protagonists with distinct abilities and stories rather than one central hero.
  • A retro-inspired JRPG presentation, character progression and a prominent soundtrack.

Consider carefully if you

  • Dislike retro-styled JRPGs or prefer a faster pace; at least one surfaced review specifically flags slowness.
  • Did not enjoy the original Octopath Traveler. A Switch review summary warns that the sequel is unlikely to convert players who were not taken with the first game.

Which platform should you choose?

Square Enix’s current game page lists PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, Steam, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Windows, Xbox Game Pass and Nintendo Switch 2. The game first launched on Switch, PS4, PS5 and Steam; later availability expanded, so older launch-era platform lists are no longer complete. Choose the edition that matches hardware you already own. The available evidence does not establish controlled performance comparisons, resolution or frame-rate differences, or Switch 2 save-transfer behavior.

Square Enix lists a free demo for PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch and Steam. It allows a three-hour trial with any of the eight protagonists, and save data can transfer to the full game. Exploration beyond the starting areas is restricted. The official demo listing does not include Xbox or Nintendo Switch 2, so do not assume those versions have a demo.

How to decide before buying

  1. Check your platform: match the game edition to your console or PC storefront; availability is broader now than at launch.
  2. Try the demo where supported: use the three-hour version on PS4, PS5, Switch or Steam to see whether the combat and presentation suit you.
  3. Use ratings as context, not a guarantee: Metacritic’s critic and user figures and Steam’s player-review percentage come from different pools and can change over time.

See Square Enix’s official OCTOPATH TRAVELER II page for current platform and demo listings.
