Nintendo’s original-game page describes its eight individual journeys and core features. The OCTOPATH TRAVELER II page and Nintendo’s sequel announcement describe the new setting, cast and advertised improvements. “Improved” is Nintendo’s product description, not an independent comparative test.
Which Octopath Traveler should I play first?
Pick the original for Orsterra
If you want to begin with the game that introduced this format, start with OCTOPATH TRAVELER. Its premise is eight travelers and eight separate storylines across Orsterra; Nintendo’s official wording is, “Eight travelers. Eight stories to be told.” It released on Switch on July 13, 2018, according to Nintendo UK.
Pick the sequel for Solistia
If the newer setting and Nintendo’s stated presentation and mechanics updates appeal more, choose OCTOPATH TRAVELER II. Its eight travelers are new, and the adventure takes place in Solistia, which Nintendo describes as an eastern and western continent divided by the sea. It released on Switch on February 24, 2023.

The available official summaries support comparing the settings, casts and advertised improvements, but do not provide a systematic breakdown of every job, skill, battle change, story connection or playtime. They are not enough to declare one game objectively better.
Do I need to play Octopath Traveler before Octopath Traveler II?
Nintendo presents OCTOPATH TRAVELER II as a separate entry with eight new travelers and a different setting. Its official summaries do not establish that playing the original is required first, nor do they explain story-continuity details. So the supported guidance is that you can choose based on which game’s setting and features interest you; don’t treat release order as a confirmed requirement.

What should I check when buying the Switch version?
Nintendo UK lists downloadable and game-card versions of OCTOPATH TRAVELER II. Check the platform label before purchasing: Nintendo also lists separate Switch 2 editions, which are not the Nintendo Switch releases compared here.
For price context, Nintendo’s US announcement listed OCTOPATH TRAVELER II at a regular price of $59.99 on February 24, 2023. That is dated US launch-page information, not a current price. Nintendo also said the first installment had sold over 3 million copies worldwide as of September 2022; that historical figure is not a current sales total.
